Robo is playing a regular. He's up against the #1. Kazama was just picked as part as the extra 12 members they take alongside the regulars he'll play against another lower player.

Obsessions over rivals is so boring and dumb why is it in every sports manga.
But shouldn't Robo be paired with a regular? Or is Robo counted as one for this arranged match, as a promising talent? (would assume Kaoru is too).

I like rivalries, they are realistic to sports themselves. But the 'toy' bit is just too much. I've not read many sport manga so I guess this just seems all fresh and not redundant to me haha.

Ok, so instead of being a Douchebag Kyosuke is just.... creepy. He has a really attachable attitude and seems very childish. I am curious as to what his signature skill is though, and his base level of ability too.

No. As far as I understand, it works like this:
  • Normally, each school has 4 regulars, so all school competitions are 4v4 in some form.
  • For the purposes of this match, each regular pairs up with a non-regular.
  • Also, as a special rule in this match, one extra pair gets thrown into the mix. This pair consists of a "promising rookie" and another non-regular, which is why it becomes a 5v5.
  • Then there's one leftover pair of two non-regulars. If the special rule didn't exist, this would be two pairs on each side instead and these guys only play for practice without being part of the competition.

Hmm, that makes sense then. I guess Kaoru + a non-regular will take on Souta + a non-regular.

Kyosuke was characterised poorly for me. Well, just hope that's temporary and he gets serious (I assume so, he's not feared for no reason). At least we saw the 'relationship' he has with Youzan; though it was hard to tell what Youzan really thought of Kyosuke since the phone call was an annoyance.
Can't say I care too much for his personality, but the way his eyes are drawn in certain panels like the last one on this page reminds me of a certain scene in Danganronpa 2, so full marks from my side in that regard.

I'm also under the impression that the way Youzan perceives Kyosuke and the way Kyosuke thinks Youzan perceives him are quite different. Thinking back to chapter 6, it seems unusual for Youzan to consider anyone a rival in a strict sense, so I reckon in general he just wants to get his score down and surpassing others is more like a by-product. He probably acknowledges Kyosuke for being strong, but that's about it. On the other hand Kyosuke obviously thinks they both see each other as fated rivals destined to compete for the no. 1 spot, or something.

On a different note, did anyone else find the conversation between Robo and the supervisor a little strange? When asking whether or not Robo wants to play, it almost seemed more like a threat more than a question to me.

I completely agree with that, at this stage at least.

Yes, it's strange, in the sense that I cannot think why the supervisor would act that way. Unless he felt he needed to force Robo (without knowing what type of person Robo is).

The supervisor was also not named (?), unlike Touhoku's.

He was already named in chapter 11, it just escaped me when I was writing the post. The name is Midouoka.

Well, I suppose maybe it's just supposed to give the reader a hint of what his personality is like in general? It could be that he's very focused on success and keeps piling pressure onto Robo when trying to develop him, eventually leading to Robo cracking under it or something (or getting close to it). Then Robo would lose sight of what made him start playing golf to begin with and we'd have a revival arc of sorts, potentially also giving Youzan a good reason to ask for an early rematch and set Robo straight.

Would you prefer him to 'mentor' Robo, or let Robo be molded by the other regulars? I'm a bit on the fence with Robo needing a push atm, since he's pretty focused on becoming a better player. Of course, an experienced eye can chime in and give some great advice - which for me is what I want from the supervisor (on occasion).

That would be a good arc imo (the revival) since this type of thing happens with athletes (and Robo's personality would make this interesting as well).

I think as far as specific techniques and whatnot are concerned, the regulars will teach Robo pretty much everything. But I could see the supervisor pitting Robo against tough opponents like he's doing right now and maybe attempt to take that "robot" image to the next level by turning Robo into a golfing machine of sorts.

Also, some quick thoughts on the match itself before the new chapter drops:
  • I expect Robo and Kyosuke to play evenly for a couple holes because Kyosuke will want to see what exactly Robo can do. Kyosuke will be in control though and Robo will eventually catch on to that.
  • Curious to see how Kazama will perform. I'm glad he's Robo's partner since it might mean we'll see him pop up every so often and he definitely has potential too. I hope he'll learn to relax more from observing Robo play, considering that seemed like a weakness of his, and then give Robo some pointers that might help them in the second half of the round.
  • I wonder if Kyosuke's partner is gonna be important in any way. Currently not expecting it, but you never know.
  • Don't think we'll see much of Shintaro, Gen and Rion, but I hope Sota and Kaoru's match will get some focus at least. Any guesses on how that one's gonna turn out? I'd expect Sota to win, but I think he'll have to get pretty serious in order to do so. I think Kaoru will finish in the mid to high 60s.

If I'm seeing this right, Kyosuke's personal best is 59, so he's the real deal without a doubt.

That is probs my favourite chapter so far.

Loved the chat the regulars had with Robo. Really enjoying them, especially Sota and Rion. Robo with his excitement to play was great to see. Very rewarding all-round from an emotive perspective.

The supervisor brought the whole club down too, which was a good move against the national champs. Now I see why he acted as he did in the previous chapter.

And the match itself started so well imo, I really couldn't ask for more hype (especially that last page). Kyosuke is an aggressive player which will add more to this match (he played a draw towards the lake). Not only will this make his game more interesting, Robo can probably learn a few more things too. Kyosuke already is excited about Robo (new toy incoming)

I agree about Kyosuke, and Kazama. It was mentioned that the supervisor must have high hopes for him, so we might as well too. Along with Robo he'll learn a lot from this match.

Yea, if Souta scores say a 66 I think Kaoru will get a 70. Their match should be closer than Robo vs Kyosuke.

Now that Kyosuke is a 59, Youzan should be a 60 or 61. Probably a 60.

Added a new poll. Results of the previous one can be found in the opening post.

Robo with his excitement to play was great to see.
Well, not just to play, but to win as well. When we discussed this topic after the first couple chapters, I believe I said I would've liked him to keep his disinterested disposition for a while longer, but I suppose it was indeed unlikely. One thing I'm still a bit curious about here is what Kyosuke's observation means, if it means anything at all. There's a pretty good chance that it just refers to Robo's general attitude compared to his "golfer self", but there's at least a possibility that it might foreshadow something else.

Definitely. Just judging by this first shot, it seems like Robo might imitate Kyosuke's targets exactly for now which opens up two very interesting scenarios:
  1. Kyosuke plays a "bad" shot on purpose. We've learned that his ability to recover from bad positions is one of his outstanding traits which should also make it difficult for Robo to imitate. So a merely decent first shot (good enough to make Robo copy it, but bad enough to affect the scores of most players) could lead to Kyosuke gaining a solid advantage.
  2. What's Robo going to do when he has to tee off first? Especially on more difficult holes I could see him committing a tactical error this way. It's also a situation in which Kazama could have an impact.
Of course it's also possible that Kyosuke's just gonna continue hitting one super shot after another and Robo simply won't be able to keep up anymore at some point.

Also, Suzaku's on-course personality continues to grow on me. Although, if he's like this against Robo already, I'm not sure I want to know how he gets when playing against Youzan.

Now that Kyosuke is a 59, Youzan should be a 60 or 61. Probably a 60.
Agreed with the 60. Unless we see a lot of tied personal bests later on, this should also confirm Sota as a top 5 player nationwide for what it's worth.

I think it's a general comment about Robo vs how other golfers are. But the latter possibility, about it being a foreshadowing, could be true as well. It might just be a defining attribute that makes Robo a special player.

Well, how the supervisor pressed Robo a little bit last chapter. It wasn't just for Robo's sake, but the club as well (to learn).

  1. I think Kyosuke could do this when he's in control, or has caught onto Robo's learning ability. He might actually try some ridiculous shots, just to see if Robo can pull it off, and can recover (should the high risk shot go wrong). I predict that, should a scenario like this occur, that Robo would not be able to recover like Kyosuke. Recovery/Scrambling would take a lot of experience, since you're in a bad situation. It might be harder for Robo to copy since there's more variables in a bad situation.
  2. Yea, easiest way is to miss a putt. Then Robo would win the hole, meaning he tees off next (I believe).
I'm strongly for Kyosuke doing something like those scenarios, since toys are meant to be played with. I'd really like to see him experiment on Robo as much as possible. It'd make for fun reading, and also allow Robo to get a comprehensive 'workout' so to speak.

Agree on Kyosuke's on-course persona. The chapter did really well with his first drive, he just got straight down to business.

Hm is there actually any causation here though? The opponents would've been the same regardless of whether Robo played or not, so I didn't read it as the special rule having an impact on the decision.

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind as well. As far as we know, Robo only has two solid options right now, his Laserbeam and the (presumably still imperfect) Snake. Of course that gives him both a straight shot and a curve shot to work with, which is good, but at the same time I doubt it'll be enough for all the traps Kyosuke might come up with - especially since Kazama mentioned that this seems to be a difficult course.

Yea, easiest way is to miss a putt. Then Robo would win the hole, meaning he tees off next (I believe).
That should be correct. If I'm not mistaken they'll also switch in the case of a tie, so there's not even any real need to do anything special.

The chapter did really well with his first drive, he just got straight down to business.
Indeed. I wonder if he'll keep up this approach throughout the entire match or if there's going to be a time when he actually has to take some time to think about his next shot.

Also, @Asia Run I saw you voted for a tie in the poll - I'd be interested in hearing your reasoning if you don't mind me asking. How do you see this whole match play out?

One thing of interest is bringing up best scores in professional world https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_round which has Ryo Ishikawa of Japan tied for first with a 58.

I'm pretty hyped for this match and think Robo will definitely turn out his best score here. While making some tactical errors along the way he will still learn a lot from being up close with Kyosuke.

Hm Well, it was a mostly a guess :paperbag. I don't think Kyousuke would lose to Robot, but I don't think Robot would lose for him here either. A tie would bring interesting outcomes for this newfound desire to win Robo has acquired.

Robo has been learning at a fast pace, he will probably learn something on this match too. As for Kyousuke has been portrayed as a fanboy (of good players) and I think he might forget Youzan for a while and focus his attention on Robot as a future rival. If Robo develops during this match Suzaku might get caugh by surprise and miss some shot, leading to a tie instead of his victory. Plus, he wants to test Robot abilities and understand how Youzan has lost to him, he could take the testing part very serious and end up in tie instead of winning.

It might be worth noting that while all the best scores are 58s, those are all only 12 under par, meaning they were achieved on a par 70 course. Some others have managed 13 under par on par 72 courses which match Kyosuke's personal best of 59. I don't remember from the top of my head if it's been confirmed already, but par 72 courses seem to be the most common overall, so I'd assume that's what's being used as standard in RxL too.

Fair enough. Follow-up question then: do you think there will be any time at all where Robo straight up loses? If he holds his own against both the strongest and most talented golfers, what kind of person in what kind of situation could beat him? Or will things always play out in Robo's favor for one reason or another?

My impression was that the match was contingent on Robo playing, and if he had refused I would assume Kyosuke would call it off. However I re-read the last chapter and it's not implied at all, so I might be correlating things for no reason.

Yea the best scores are indeed quite low. I was thinking they played some easy course or something. Or with a handicap.

I agree, and Robo scoring high 70's at that.

I think 72 is the common par of a course, so you're right the par 70's should yield a lower score.

Just on scores, what would be the mean score for someone like Kyosuke? If his best is a 59, I'm going to say a mid 80 should represent a poor day. So a low 70 would be the average roughly? Or in this series should we see them constantly hitting close to their best? (keeping in mind that pros shoot around par on the PGA tour).

There was the team match with Rion + Robo, and we saw a scorecard. Not sure if that provides any indication though.

Robo will probably lose more than once, for Youzan or Kyousuke (or other strong opponent in future matches), about the tie I was just referring to this mach. He still lacks in many aspects as a golfer (he didn't know anything except straight shots), Rion himself taught only the basic to Robo. If the author focus on the personalities of the players in this match, its possible that Robo ties with Kyousuke, but if not, he will lose (by a great difference) to Suzaku.

This training camp is a good way to show the strong/weak points of each player participating, I hope to see the other members of the team play as well, Rion was the only on e that played a match so far.

Well, I think it's worth remembering that Rion's best score is only 70 or, assuming par 72 as standard, 2 under par. So staying around par actually indicates a consistent performance from him. I think that's also important from a narrative point of view though. We only get the best scores when characters are introduced, so outside of specific cases like one-hit wonders and extremely consistent players who can replicate their best scores almost 100% of the time, those scores should be representative of their real strength.

Also, another page we might want to look at is this one from chapter 7. Assuming these numbers are fairly representative, a mid level golfer's average deviates by about 6 strokes from his best in this series. I'd think it's fair to assume that the higher the skill level, the closer the average is to the player's personal best (although there are most certainly differences here too, e.g. I wouldn't be surprised if Sota's average was worse than Gen's, Shintaro's and maybe even Rion's).

As far as Kyosuke is concerned, given what we know about him, I see no reason to think he's consistently hitting 59s and 60s, but I also think his other numbers are better than what you're suggesting. His special traits are great offense from the get-go and the ability to save par. This makes me think that he'll rarely score bogeys or worse even on a bad day and his score will mainly depend on the number of birdies and eagles he can hit. So my estimates would be around 65 on average (i.e. pretty much untouchable for non-bird names even if he plays normally while they're at their absolute best, given what we know so far) and I don't think he'd go over par even on an ordinary bad day.

This training camp is a good way to show the strong/weak points of each player participating, I hope to see the other members of the team play as well, Rion was the only on e that played a match so far.
Yeah, I'm sure the training camp will be used to flesh out the other regulars some more. I think that will mostly apply to Shintaro, Gen and Rion though since they're in the "might get replaced by Robo" club whereas I could see the specifics of Sota's skills being saved for an actual tournament match.

One thing I'm wondering that we haven't discussed yet is how Kyosuke's style could change later on in the game. The first shot he just hit almost the moment he stepped up, but will he continue doing so on every shot? Or will he actually start taking his time if he gets pressured or when the course layout becomes more complicated? Any guesses?
