I was gonna say the same thing. They destroyed everyone because of Salem. Then the same god who refused to bring Ozma back because it would destroy the balance ultimately decided to bring him back. Which goes against why he told Salem no in the first place. And before that they played with his life like it was a toy just reviving and killing him. The younger brother actually killed him because he was asked second. I dont think Salem was arrogant either. She was desperate and thought it was unfair that someone as good as Ozma would die and the gods would allow it. And it’s not fair because life isn’t fair.

However, I think that Salem just checking them because she may already know it's Cinder ( Leo and Watts )

Then she will give him an ultimatum to hunt down team RWBY and get the Relic that's why in EP.2 the Fat Lady bodyguard told that there was a big guy was looking for RWBY one-week ago.

Also Hazel don't turn Salem gaze on my daughter with the Faunus Militia <<< My theory that Blake may be hunted for uniting Faunus may be right ( because let's be honest that was bitch slap for someone whose goal is to divide Humanity )

However, I think that Salem just checking them because she may already know it's Cinder ( Leo and Watts )

Then she will give him an ultimatum to hunt down team RWBY and get the Relic that's why in EP.2 the Fat Lady bodyguard told that there was a big guy was looking for RWBY one-week ago.

Salem asking the same questions viewers asked when volume 5 episodes were coming out....nice. Of course, its all cinder's fault. Cinder literally went full retard there. And no one else there had the sense to point it out to cinder.

Cinder: lets go get the relic while we have the advantage.

Episode was fantastic, learning about their past was a really good treat. I don't particularly like the idea that their 4 daughters were the original Maidens. Didn't they say that Ozpin gave 4 girls his powers?Which could be looked at metaphorically, but in this case I want to believe he LITERALLY gave them his powers. Much like we've seen Raven and Qrow possessing the ability to turn into birds. That's Ozpin's magic. Excellent tie in to the magic element of the story btw.
And well, about them being ZerVis:

My first guess was that they were the maidens but looking at the fight there is a good case to be made that they weren't. For starters, ozpin and salem basically nuked the castle. And with intent to kill at that. As I said earlier, we see salem revive out of apparently paste. It wouldn't be weird at all that the girls died in the crossfire, as grim as that would be. Another thing, ozpin made the point that he lost his powers when he created the maidens. But.... He clearly had the bulk of his strength when fighting salem. so he didn't lose it when his girls were born at least. The point was made that ozpin spent a few lives just feeling crappy about himself.... That fits very well into the life he had in the maiden's fable. Most likely each maiden reminded him of his own daughters which he lost and might have killed himself.

something that doesn't specifically make a lot of sense to me is the god of dark... He gave humanity magic... Which is weirdly kind. And he also resurrected ozpin merely because salem asked. Isn't that weird considering he didn't originally want humanity around and created grim? The gods are clearly making some experiment but perhaps a dislike for humanity is not quite what drove the GoD actions but rather the experiment. The GoL said he would judge humanity based on it being united or not. Perhaps the god of dark created grim and magic to help unite people? Giving them a common foe and the means to fight it....

Well, that was a much better backstory than I was actually dreading might have been. Hasn't explained everything obviously, but now we have an idea of what the big picture is at this point.

Speculation on what Oz's intent is for hiding information? The fact that Salem couldn't be destroyed is a possibility (though the potentially caveat of Jinn's answer referring to only him individually remains), for being a demotivating influence. A variation of this could be the seeming impossibility of the task of bringing the entire human race together. Or the fact that they were once lovers, which could be misconstrued as adversely affecting his judgement (though I would again posit that centuries of this conflict would have long settled his resolve by this point). I could definitely see one of RWBY et al. asking, "Why would you hide this from us?" and I wonder what the answer would (will?) be, since it sure isn't clear yet.

Now as for the acquisition of the relics, it might just be as simple as a desire for using whatever power or advantage each one could give, even if there was no intent to bring the two brothers back for judgement. I suppose one would have to be careful to keep them separated then, if they were to manage to get their hands on all of them...

Its not necessarily a retcon because we don't know if ozpin's children are the 4 maidens. If anything, I would make the case that they aren't. Ozpin's kids had the ability to use magic on their own. In turn when it comes to the maidens ozpin gave them the ability to use magic at the expense of his own. I'd say there is a good chance that ozpin's kids died that night, nuked by either ozpin or salem.

I will hold to the thought that the Hermit ( Ozpin ) has seen his daughters in those 4 visitors and decided to give them a gift to perform magic.

In Ep.2 Spider Lady mention that the big guy ( Hazel ) one week ago was looking for RWBY so he's one week behind RWBY because Cinder scenes were 2 weeks after RWBY left on a train

So yeah he's not gonna die and the scene with Salem was probably one week after fall of Haven
