And the more I think about it this bothers me. Is no one else confused on how Cinder beat the greatest hero of all time who was chosen by the gods themselves in a fight?
How the hell did he lose? He’s one of the original humans and was clearly winning.

Ozma's original incarnation would have nothing to do with this on account of being dead. Silver eyes seem related to the children ozma had post reincarnating.

I'd say ozpin lost because he simply didn't have the power. Ozpin apparently does not have much magic power left meanwhile cinder had plenty of maiden juice.

He gave powers for 4 Maidens + Qrow and Raven ( I think that he even mentioned that he still is able to only give one more gift << not sure )

But... what is dust? That's the bit that remains mysterious.... And I have a crackpot theory for it. Dust is the remnants of the original human population. They were destroyed but remained as dust. Not alive though. Perhaps dust is humanity's magic specifically, left behind in crystallized form. and dusts main function is... a timer. Before I wondered why even bother having the gods return. They are an existential threat to humanity and they are clearly better off simply not risking their return. But... if humanity came from dust, what happens when it runs out, being presumably a limited resource created from the collective magic of humanity? Well, simple, humanity ends. so humanity can simply never summon the gods and inevitably face its end or... humanity must summon them to have a chance of survival at least.

You know, I could totally buy that dust is what's left over of the original humans (or their magic). Haven't really thought about it enough to consider if it's a 'timer' of sorts, though who's to say that it really was placed there with a particular function in mind, might have just been left behind.

As for the latest episode... the thought that popped into my mind after watching it was: You know, I enjoy this a whole lot more when it's progressing the story and the group is going after their latest problem, and not when it's getting into all these interpersonal conflicts...

I mean, yeah, certainly. My issue isn't with them fighting a grim but rather qrow dying now, under this circumstances and in this place. qrow deserves better.

The whole planet is supposed to be an experiment of sorts. Specifically a controlled experiment. And to me it is strange the way in which dust was shown during the episode. You have ozpin in a new world which he is unfamiliar with, a new faunus race and.... dust is shown. I get the impression dust was something which ozpin was unfamiliar with at that point. Which at least suggests it not being a thing earlier. In any case, we have been specifically told that humanity came from dust.... and dust having a critical role to humanity. It is definitely of extreme importance to the story's metaplot.

Well, conflict between characters in this series tends to be forced and awkward. Take the yang/blake stuff... At the end of volume 3 yang gets mutilated when she tries to help blake. And it even is yang's fault for jumping in a fit of rage without a plan. Then yang uses her semblance to trick adam and run away with yang, thus saving both their lives. After that blake leaves. And yang is angry that blake left and.... that is all that has been in yang's head since then. And then they reunite and are clearly carrying this... but why? They saved each other. Blake saved yang. Blake left after yang was saved. Sure, blake could have left a note on the fridge but does what we saw warrant this level of resentment? I don't buy it. Or take the ozpin flashback... When I saw that I thought "holy crap does it even make sense ozpin is THIS PERFECT? The guy is a saint and deserves all of the parades and all of the harems.". And then we see everyone being angry at him over ozpin not telling them stuff which does not help them.

That's it in a nutshell.

I expect fictional characters to be caricatures to a certain degree, exaggerated in some way or another for dramatic effect. But when it gets taken to the point of being inconsistent with the world/story that's built, it becomes jarring.

I'm not the type to harp on something to any great extent, so don't take my 'complaining' the wrong way. Mostly just noting down what's been disappointing lately from what started off as a pretty charming setting and group of characters. I'm still the type that looks to the positives, and oftentimes gives a pass to a show if it still manages to do something well that I like, even if it falters in other places (which gets pointed out loudly in certain places of the internet that I tend to avoid). Life's too short to focus on the negatives and ruin your own enjoyment.

They saved each other. Blake saved yang. Blake left after yang was saved. Sure, blake could have left a note on the fridge but does what we saw warrant this level of resentment?

I mean leaving the note didn't make much sense Blake didn't want RWY to look for her..

Not to mention Yang could leave the house much earlier before she would be ready ( she still isn't )

Writers probably forget about that Blake has jumped between Adam and Yang and later carry Yang to evacuation Zone while having a hole inside her body..

Or they treat it's similar to Blake staying in the WF and not leaving with her parents when all fault was on her and Ghira and Kali didn't do anything wrong....

Yang is mad that Blake left and it's justified ( judging that people were leaving her already in her life << But at the same time she doesn't hold anything against Ruby that also left ) but would be nice if the show acknowledged that Blake saved Yang that night as well not only " Yang saved Blake "

Ok I.... liked the episode in spite of there being nothing about it that is particularly surprising.

Last episode we got a hint at the grim beneath the village. We saw it hit the chained door. And that told us that whatever was down there was not particularly strong. And this episode made sense of that. I didn't quite expect a whole horde of grims though, that was a nice twist at least.

It's also interesting that they are making a plot point out of qrow's alcoholism. In this episode qrow was useless and in a way not even because of the grim. They probably exacerbated the drinking of course but that wasn't everything.

Now, there was two bits that bother me:

the first is that the series is not specifically consistent with how strong or agile these girls are. In previous episodes they would have jumped out of the well easily. And even weiss could have punch through that flimsy door. its also kinda weird, and convenient that those weak ass grim would be bulletproof. And if fire could hurt them like that then weiss should have been able to deal with them through her dust control. Or summons. Overall, the episode was nice but this not being easier is just weird. I guess the writers simply can't handle weiss'summons. Would it have been difficult to have weiss summon something and fail?

The second bit is that no one actually pieced together the grim stuff before. It was so obvious....

That said, I did love how the villagers died. They weren't.... "killed". They were exposed for so long to so many grim... and they all just stayed where they were until they died. They probably died of dehydration before they could starve.

Actually I had a problem with that before watching the episode " Why are they running so fucken slow " but episode explained it nicely characters even commented that they don't have the strength to hold weapons anymore.

I hoped for more, but wasn't disappointed by this episode in the end. At least they didn't drag this arc more than they should and we can move on. The scenes in the basement kinda gave me good old TWD feels, so that was nice even though the animation felt a bit off this time. Other than that, I'm quite disappointed by Qrow and slowly start to get tired of him. Just give this guy some good development or scratch him off of team RWBY, he has become unsightly to watch nowadays as sad as it sounds. Ruby's doujutsu starts to kick in which is to be expected at this stage as well as her getting a sensei now. Curious to know what the old hag has to tell us.

It pains me to say this, but that's certainly true. I guess I'm still affected by all the hype surrounding Qrow. Since I watched the first 5 volumes in one go, it didn't feel like much time passed by, hence the hype barely wore off. Now that I have to wait a freaking week for a new episode, all the bad character developments weigh heavier than usual. I still like him though, but seriously wish that they portray him better. He is funny and all (they can keep his drinking habits for comedy moments for all I care), but an adult of this supposed caliber should get his shit together and take the initiative. He doesn't contribute at all. He feels like a corpse which is dragged along. That's actually a death penalty in terms of characterization. That's why I said they should scratch him off if they don't have any proper plans with him.

I would sacrifice Yang's right arm for more Glynda and Winter screentime.
