Re: Second ongoing Shingeki no Kyojin manga series?

English is my first language but I can read French myself, actually. I'm better at it than I am with Japanese, having grown up studying French and all.

Re: Second ongoing Shingeki no Kyojin manga series?

The most important question is: Will Before the Fall manga be considered canon?

Since it is based from the novels that means no, since most considered Before the Fall non canon in the current Shingeki no Kyojin universe.

I wonder if filler side stories sell very well even compared to confirmed canon...

Cover for October Issue of Monthly Shounen Sirius:

And here's better quality for the poster of Shingeki no Kyojin Before the Fall (spin-off of Shingeki no Kyojin):

I already know this information is already uploaded; there going to be another spin-off of Shingeki no Kyojin and it going to serialize in Aria (shoujo magazine):

wtf at the shoujo manga?....I still can't tell if it's real or not. I hope it's a gag manga or something. I can't.

--
I guess it is real....

Hm, I hope Isayama writes Erwin and Leivi's first meeting or whatever in SNK as a flashback or as a short extra chapter some day.

Is that spin-off… which most likely tells Levi's backstory (as you can see from the image, and there's 'gaiden' and 'prologue' in the title)… going to be serialized a SHOUJO MAGAZINE? What the !@^#?

…

(Levi… shoujo… does not compute)

…

Be afraid, be very afraid… of the fujoshis? :gwah

This is going to be even worst than what I expected. No good.

fwiw I doubt the spin-off itself will be BL, though there may be some light overtones here or there. Probably they'll just romanticize (in the general sense, not in the "love story" sense) Levi's background. I have no idea what Eren has to do with it though. He has to be covered in canon, so...

I registered just to say how that doesn't make it any better... I have nothing against BL or shojo, in series where it is appropriate, but in the context of Shingeki, the prospect makes me a bit queasy- particularly since the teaser picture is already so tacky, it could come straight from a girly, cliche fanwork.
There's doujinshi and tumblr for this stuff, why did it have to become near-canon? Really, really disappointed about these news... I feel like they're ruining my favourite character just to pander to fujoshi... sigh ;(

(And hi everyone, nice to meet you! :D)

Haha, welcome to the forum :)
I very much agree with you especially with your doujinshi point, in the event it turns out to be the case. But then again it's a bit early to say it's BL lol. I'm sure (or I'm hoping) the people who are involved would go through the same thought process as us, keeping in mind BL isn't as well received in Japan (despite serialising in ARIA, it would surely have an impact on your typical SnK fan...) The story is written by Sunaaku Gan from Nitroplus, where they have a history with working with the Shingeki anime people... I'm guessing that means even though Isayama's name isn't credited for the story, it's gonna be pretty much official (not to mention the fact ARIA is under Kodansha...) :/

Well, the simple idea of an official BL shoujio featuring Levi makes me cringe...
I'm not a fan of BL, but that's not the issue here...

It's just that it doesn't fit with the context of Shingeki...
There's no time for romance in this kind of world, not even for Mikasa and Eren, so even less for Levi...

Welcome, Faerie! :)

Just for an alternative opinion, I'll say I don't really care about the mood of the piece, as long as they don't make the characters themselves OOC. Those who don't like shoujo (and I'm not a fan of most shoujo personally, mind you, so that includes me) can just avoid this particular side story if they don't like the presentation. There's no one forcing anyone to read it and no rule in the publishing world that says if a set of characters were introduced in a story of one kind of genre, they can never appear in another genre ever. Also, doujinshi are technically illegal in Japan so although pros do tend to turn a blind eye most of the time in order not to upset fans, they aren't exactly going to encourage them. SnK has a considerable female following too, so I guess it makes sense to market to the fujoshi subset of them as well. Again, as long as they're in character, I really don't care.

Well said, the characters only need to be in-character. But I'm not eager to see Levi surrounded by flowery / bubbly shoujo backgrounds, if you know what I mean. :darn

Well, the manga spinoff isn't probably going to be BL anyway. I hope. They'd probably, for the most part, be in-character. I mean this manga spinoff is based on the visual novels in the Limited Edition Blu-rays Vol. 3 and 6, and since Isayama is actually supervising the VN versions soooo....Yup, they'd be mostly in-character....Yeah. XD. I'd probably see this as official since we actually know that Isayama is helping out with this.

But I think the reason why Levi's past is made into a spin-off is because Isayama probably deemed that it's not gonna affect the main storyline that much. It's probably just going to give us insight who Levi really is and how he became what he is in the main manga.

Though I'm pretty much okay if there's romance in SnK. Any other manga, mostly no. The reason is because, if I'm getting it correctly right now, this manga is a story about humanity as well. Removing the concept of romance is kind of removing a part of humanity. But I'd rather have the romance as light as possible that it's barely noticeable until you reread the manga a couple of times. I don't want it heavy to the point of it being silly.

@mikasaaa
There's probably not going to be any flowers in it though. Seeing as how ARIA shojo magazine contains some serious manga and has quite some mature content in it...Maybe bubbles...XDDDD

Thanks! :)
I tried replying earlier but looks like it got lost. Replying from my phone now, apologies for any autocorrect disasters!

Simply avoiding this story is easier said than done when it's about a favourite character and has a plot that you'd have preferred to see from the real author- particularly a plot that's really interesting.
Personally I'd hoped to one day see it in a special chapter. It's now unlikely to ever happen and instead we get some flowery shojo which in the worst case will detail the chronicles of pretty prince Levi and his boyfriend Erwin ^^;
Of course I'm hoping that either they'll be considerate and remember that most of a shonen series audience isn't too thrilled about BL or shojo and that some might even find it off-putting (let's be honest, most male viewers I know strongly dislike BL- not even out of homophobia but they just don't want to see it)
I have nothing against BL or shojo or those who enjoy it, but why force it onto a completely different series? Ofc there's no rule that says they can't, but it doesn't mean they should: at least not with a fan-favorite of a gritty shonen series.
Sure, SnK has a lot of female fans- but not all females are fujoshi and many, such as myself enjoy it for what it is. A romantisation of it makes me uncomfortable...
Furthermore, most popular shonen have a huge female and fujoshi following. But Naruto isn't getting a spinoff about Sasuke's school days with Naruto in Ribon magazine... (the comparison limps, as Ribon is just shojo, but you get my point)- and that's arguably not half as gritty and serious as SnK.

But I agree, as long as they're in character, it could be bearable- though tbh that flowery preview just makes me doubt that.
I hope they'll be considerate of their target audience and not let this have even hints of BL (or other romance- please don't let Levi's past be about some girl that got eaten or some other sob story...) and confine the shojo to the art or at least declare this not canon. It would be extremely disappointing to see typical dojin and shojo clichees as SnK canon, at least to me :(

Sorry to sound so negative, but for some reason this rubs me the wrong way- maybe I spent too much time on tumblr accidentally coming across the latest yaoi.. material.. so now I worry it could become canon xD I'm probably just panicking

Edit: yumpo, I'm hoping you're about right xD and hopefully these novels are actually well supervised..

Thank you and I feel exactly the same about those flowery/bubbly background things for a series with such heavy/weighty themes and subject matter as SnK. I have faith they'll do it tastefully as possible for a shoujo, though. Especially considering what Yumpo said about it being based on the VN. That said, I have less faith they'll keep the mood-killing backgrounds out than I do that they'll keep the characters IC...

Exactly what I think. Even fujoshi would probably get pissed off if they suddenly were faced with official art of uke-fied Eren, seme-ized Erwin, or whatever. No one expects that kind of thing from official sources for a series like this one.

Yes, this. It would be cheating their rich characters to leave out what hints of romance Isayama himself is already writing into the story. Subtlety is key, however. I'm a huge fan of subtle presentation of character emotions (which is why I dislike bubbly/flowery pages and such, lol). I think my only exception to that is for comedy.

You're welcome. And sorry you lost your original reply! I hate when that happens. :(

Hehehe... well that would just be way OOC and so I doubt they'll come up with something like that. Especially if it's based on the VN. And if indeed it's based on the VN, then the plot was written in consultation with the original author. :)

Of course I'm hoping that either they'll be considerate and remember that most of a shonen series audience isn't too thrilled about BL or shojo and that some might even find it off-putting (let's be honest, most male viewers I know strongly dislike BL- not even out of homophobia but they just don't want to see it)

Well the fact here is that the target audience for a shoujo isn't going to be the shounen readership. On the contrary, I'm hopeful that Kodansha is maybe realizing that more and more Japanese girls want substantial stories and characters too (!)-- not just cutesy love stories all the time. Bringing a shounen series' characters into a shoujo mag like that is like a great big kick in all their writers' (and prospective writers') behinds, boldly reminding them of that. ;)

Sure, SnK has a lot of female fans- but not all females are fujoshi and many, such as myself enjoy it for what it is. A romantisation of it makes me uncomfortable...

This is true, but I think there is more of a push for these kinds of things to happen nowadays than there ever was before. SnK isn't the first shounen series to cater to its female audience-- this is just a bigger gesture in that direction than usual. And many shounen series have even had homo/biromantic aspects directly in their canon storylines in the past (including both Naruto and SnK), but they just didn't present these elements of the story with your typical BL/GL genre conventions.

Sorry to sound so negative, but for some reason this rubs me the wrong way- maybe I spent too much time on tumblr accidentally coming across the latest yaoi.. material.. so now I worry it could become canon xD I'm probably just panicking
No, I totally understand when you put it that way. I hate seeing the characters I love go out of character and a lot of fan-generated art does exactly that. -_-; I just have a little faith that officially-produced stuff won't go OOC. ^_^

Just saw it as well, only a 10 page prologue? And the art is..meh, I dunno.. too early to judge, but I would still prefer only the original manga, not the novels, spinoffs, live action movies and all that jazz..

Well, at least it seems that it will be a serialization of the first book as well, and not only the last two.
Since I didn't read them, I'm actually pretty interested to see this.

Looks interesting to me. Could easily turn out canon that there was a cover-up about this incident from 70 years ago. I'm going to double check there isn't one already, then start a new thread since the 10-page prologue I read on MS looked really promising!
