What's the proof of your asumption? How about some physical equations. It must be much harder to cut a gigantic wall of [solid]ice from away, than "split" some gas. Well that's only my theory. I just can't imagine how a clash of two weapons can show us, how strong one person is...

Re: Shanks vs Whitebeard

Except you're leaving out the magnitudes, so that's just gibberish. Zoro's "tools" aren't equal to Mihawk's "tool."
The "magnitudes" which you are referring to depends on the user. In short, you can't value haki as the highest tool. Since in the end it is up to the user, how skilled s/he is. Bittman was completely right by putting the tools like that (which why I would like to thank him twice. Like always presenting the best and easiest logics).

Examples of what Im talking about:
  • Zetsu's explanation: Itachi's skill Tsukuyomi, who wields the better Sharingan (MS) was beaten by Sasuke's regular Sharingan.
  • Mihawk vs Zoro: Zoro's 3 named sword were stopped by a regualr knife.
In both examples it is a showcase of what the better skilled user with less better tools is capable of. So just cause Shanks can wield the kings haki doesn't put him above Mihawk, for every logical reason. You might want to read Zetusu's explanation, which is better than mine ^^

Vista and Shiryu can make the sky split? Scans?
Right back at you: Shanks can make the sky split? Scans?

I just can't imagine how a clash of two weapons can show us, how strong one person is...
Apparently there are some ppl thinking that Shanks split the sky. For reasons which I still fail to understand.

the damage to Moby Dick is a bigger deal than the sky even, no where else have we seen objects physically damaged by someone's presence
Im still with my argument. Oda used Shanks to present haki. It was new at that time, that's why Oda put that badass show on WB's ship. That was one time only, we will most likely never see physicals objects breaking in that form. I hope we can clear this argument for once and all if Shanks uses his haki outburst for a second time.

Anyway, not that Shank's haki outburst is gone help him against Mihawk. On WB's ship we see a few non-named dudes standing without major problems. So it is very likely that Mwk won't have any problems at all.

"Probably"
Sky >>>>>>>>> piece of a Glacier.
Clouds are just water in gaseous state. The clash make the attack dispersata, opening the sky.

Look at the distance that the 30km of glacial mountain was from Mihawk. And Mihawk wasn't aiming at it, he was doing a close-range cut at Luffy. It's ridiculous that a "side-effect" of his attack cut something times the size of Marineford. I don't see why to think that Mihawk won't be able to split the sky.

In fact, we saw Whitebeard use his bisento a lot of time during this war. He could create a large crates hitting the ground... but it doesn't feel like he could destroy the glacial mountain just with it.

So you are suggesting it was the Gura Gura no Mi? From what we see at Marineford, the quake waves should go right through Shanks and open the sky behind him, not over. Unless Shanks ate a copy copy fruit to absorb someone else Devil Fruit. =P

In other word, probably a lot of characters can split the sky. Mihawk cut 30km of ice mountain as a "side effect" of his battle with Luffy.

Just to remember that Whitebeard power is the Gura Gura no Mi. If Whitebeard wouldn't be allowed to use his Devil Fruit, he would probably loose to Mihawk.
30 km? Seriously? I'd estimate 0.5 - 1.0. 2 km tops.

Mihawk knows he has nothing on Whitebeard. When he sent that slash he wanted to see "how far he was from that man." The quake fruit didn't enter into it, Whitebeard is on a different level. How many times was Whitebeard cut in this war?

The "magnitudes" which you are referring to depends on the user.
That was my point. We know Shanks and Mihawk are similar in swordsmanship with a nod to Mihawk. Shanks also has a completely outrageous haki. It isn't that he has two tools. It's that he has one tool almost as good as Mihawk, and is godlike with an additional tool.

Apparently there are some ppl thinking that Shanks split the sky. For reasons which I still fail to understand.
Well there's the fact that the only time we've seen him swing, the sky, you know, split.

Im still with my argument. Oda used Shanks to present haki. It was new at that time, that's why Oda put that badass show on WB's ship.
So Luffy's devil fruit isn't actually any good, Oda just used him to introduce us to DFs? And Smoker can't really logia disperse, Oda just wanted to make logias look cool? And rokushiki can't actually hurt anyone, Oda just had to make CP9 threatening?
Your argument comes down to "Shanks was too much of a badass to actually be that badass. The cool things he did can't be real because then he'd be too cool, those things were just flukes to make him look cooler than he actually is."

Anyway, not that Shank's haki outburst is gone help him against Mihawk.
You keep saying this and it's laughably wrong. If the Haoshoku was only good for knocking fodder unconscious, Doberman wouldn't have been wetting himself about Luffy having it. Haoshoku is the real fucking deal.

Clouds are just water in gaseous state.
You all keep coming back to clouds. The manga explicitly states it wasn't clouds, it was the heavens. I can cut ice with a big knife. How can you cut the sky? It's unnatural, absurd.

What's the proof of your asumption? How about some physical equations. It must be much harder to cut a gigantic wall of [solid]ice from away, than "split" some gas.
Gases take the shape of their container, chief. You can cut through them easily, sure. They don't stay cut. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_theory

Good points. They are also ignoring that the sky is a lot further from Shanks than Mihawk was from the glacier. I'd say Shanks power traveled at least 100s of times further than Mihawk's to that glacier. Just shows how much range he's got on his power over Mihawk.

Maybe I overestimated it. But looking there:

It's beyond 2km. One of these battleships has like 50m?

I don't get the Devil Fruit power. Whitebeard didn't moved at all, because his subordinates would protect him.

And he was stabbed 200 times. He has a super-human stamina. But I am talking about the power with weapons.

Yeah, 100 times further, but 100 times weaker (solid - gaseous). Looks fair for me.

Easily explained, hakoshou is so mighty, because it enables the user to gather other people around him. That's what made Roger and Whitebeard so dangerous. It enabled them to go against he WG with such a large number of people, and that's the greatest fear of the Marines. Obvious, but you had to make a drama around it, instead of reading the manga and seeing what's between the lines..

I really want to see how you cut ice with a knife, that's 10 meters away from you.

There are three explanations for the splitting of the sky:
1. the aura/hakoshou clash was so tremendous, that it ripped apart whatever they "split".
2. the clashes did it, but how can a clash of two swords split apart something that's kilometers away?
3. we are all wrong and should shut our traps. :D

If Shanks was the only one swinging, I had no trouble agreeing with you. However that is not the case. Also it is not possible to cut sth without aiming for that.

So Luffy's devil fruit isn't actually any good, Oda just used him to introduce us to DFs? And Smoker can't really logia disperse, Oda just wanted to make logias look cool? And rokushiki can't actually hurt anyone, Oda just had to make CP9 threatening?

You are clearly missing my point also Im done explaining. If there is no damage on physical objects shown after we see Shanks using his haki outburst for a second time, I hope at least then we can clear that up. Until then I will just wait and I will sure as hell remember this discussion.

So you are suggesting it was the Gura Gura no Mi?
For gods sake no, Im clearly one of those saying that both of them cut the sky.

The graphics are self explaining. The forces of WB and Shanks caused a shockwave, whereby the sky split. The impact was created by equal forces (only referring to that clash, not saying that Shanks is WB's equal).
Seriously Im thinking about thread with a vote.. xD

You keep saying this and it's laughably wrong. If the Haoshoku was only good for knocking fodder unconscious, Doberman wouldn't have been wetting himself about Luffy having it. Haoshoku is the real fucking deal.
Who said anything about the kings haki being useless? Im talking about the haki outburst alone. It works only on fodder. It is just one skill of the kings haki, which is clearly useless against strong foes.

Yeah, so there's room for the five ships in the picture and I'll generously give you three more plus a similar space in between each. 50 m * 16 = 0.8 km.

No, there isn't a glass ceiling around the Earth, THAT IS MY POINT. Cutting the sky is absurd. It's unreasonable, unnatural, on a completely different level from cutting a gigantic iceberg. There is some cosmic shit going on in the clash between Whitebeard and Shanks, and as everyone is so eager to point out, they weren't even serious.

Who said anything about the kings haki being useless? Im talking about the haki outburst alone. It works only on fodder. It is just one skill of the kings haki, which is clearly useless against strong foes.

So you don't think his outrageous displays of haki on the Moby Dick are in anyway correlated with his ability to use haki in ways other than knocking out fodder? Do you think he's only good at knocking out fodder? I raised that point because every time haki is mentioned in Shanks' combat abilities, you disregard it as Mihawk not being fodder.
By that token, we've also seen only one distant object Mihawk slashed at get cut by accident, and we've seen him swing a lot more than we've seen Shanks around about. By your argument you have less reason to use his iceberg than I have to use the sky or the Moby Dick railing as evidence.

Easily explained, hakoshou is so mighty, because it enables the user to gather other people around him.
Then why do Hancock, Roger, and Shanks have such relatively small crews? Shiki had a gigantic armada vs. Roger's little ship. The more we've seen of the past the more it appears that much of the world hated Roger. What you said only applies to Whitebeard (which I would argue is because his defining characteristic is his desire for a family) and to Luffy, whom Mihawk identified as having the "friendship" power or whatever long before he was shown with Haoshoku. They seem completely distinct to me.

I can't cut ice with a sword from a distance, no, but there are things in this world that can cut ice from a distance. Cutting ice is something that makes sense. YOU CANNOT CUT THE SKY! IT IS NOT SOMETHING ABLE TO BE CUT! That is the point. Cutting ice from far away is crazy and incredible, but cutting the sky doesn't even make sense: we are unable to comprehend the power in that clash.

I have treid to explain that haki is not a distinct skill. Yes Shanks can use haki, so? He is still a swordsman by any means. Instead trying to point out his haki, why don't you argue that he is not swordsman. We ALL know he is wielding the kings haki.

I raised that point because every time haki is mentioned in Shanks' combat abilities, you disregard it as Mihawk not being fodder.
Cause you only mentioned so far the haki outburst. And u explicit stated that Shanks haki was the only one shown damaging physical objects. <- 2nd means nothing.

I never used the iceberg to backup Mihawk. Actually I have just two arguments: 1. Shanks is a swordsman 2. Mihawk is the best swordsman among swordsman.

You can use the MD as evidence to point out that he is capable of using the haki. You can even use the page, where a pirate (in the war) stated that Shanks and WB can use the kings haki. However you can't use the sky as any argument. Since it was NOT HIS accomplishment.

Cutting the sky (not just clouds) in half is hundreds of times harder than cutting ice. It requires a metaphysical-altering force to cut something like the sky. Plant Mihawk up close to the sky that Shanks and Whitebeard cut, give him a 1000 swings, he won't be able to produce what they did in 1...its a different type of power required to do that. Shanks and Whitebeard have that power to cut the sky and that defines them, showing us what legends are truly made of in the One Piece Universe.

Is Mihawk the best Haki user though since we know Shanks has some of the most formidable Haki shown. Your argument doesnt account for his seemingly inferior Haki, just what he can do with the sword. The moment the Haki comes into play in the fight your argument crumbles. If you only think Haki works on fodder then your argument might have worked, but considering Haki has been used on admiral levels and shichibukai levels...I dont think that is gonna fly.

You seem to mistake haki with a gun or sth. I can only repeat myself, haki is not a fighting style on its own. It can be used with any style, naturally also with swordsmanship. Even if he uses a haki imbued sword as his primary weapon, he will be still a swordsman. As long he is a swordsman, he is inferior to Mwhk's title. It is a simple hierarchy.

I'm not saying he fights with a sword or haki. I'm saying sword+haki |= sword. I think Mihawk's title would still be true if he was the best with a sword and not the best with sword+haki. I don't doubt that he would win a friendly fencing duel with Shanks, but if lives are on the line my money's on haoshoku.

Mwk's title doesn't exclude haki user.
I disagree
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/434/05/
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/96/17/ when he gets in a good mood, the weather changes, he has god-mode on
vs
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/50/14/ that man is still capable of fighting back
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/567/16/ why aren't people falling in unconscious heaps all around him?
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/570/02/ he too looks pretty perturbed by Luffy having haoshoku
Mihawk is miles away from Shanks in haki.
so I guess there's nothing really left to discuss.

To be more direct, it was hyped up by some of the crew. If they had really "cut the sky", then not only would you have needed someone well versed in the atmosphere, but then the sun would have burned every living thing on earth in an instant. The "sky" is not a physical object, and thus it cannot be cut.

If you can "cut" the sky, you can cut air. You can cut space. You can cut a black hole. You can cut emotions. These are all things that are immaterial, and impossible to "cut".

Instead, I always took the line as an exaggeration to show the magnitude of the power that is being held by Shanks and Whitebeard. Would it have sounded half as impressive if it was "They cut the clouds!"? Not really.

[/B]

Cutting the sky (not just clouds) in half is hundreds of times harder than cutting ice. It requires a metaphysical-altering force to cut something like the sky. Shanks and Whitebeard have that power to cut the sky and that defines them, showing us what legends are truly made of in the One Piece Universe.
Once again, any proof Mihawk cannot cut the "sky"? Is a person titled with "The World's Strongest Swordsman" a lesser 'legend' to that of a Yonkou? Even if you only held that sort of title for twenty minutes, you'd be a legend.

If we believe that "cutting the sky" was really just splitting the clouds, then it is far less than Mihawk breaking a frozen wave of ocean from a few kilometres away (can't be effed doing a picture with arrows, but if Mihawk was in the bay, or even just before the platform, the waves were on seperate sides of the Marineford island. Not a "giant" island like Alabasta, but still probably a few kilometres in diameter) is actually more impressive.

Still, Shanks didn't aim at the sky to cut the clouds by himself. It was a runoff of his clash with Whitebeard, making it impressive in it's own right.

They are actually incomparable. One is the result of a clash with the titled "Strongest Man in the World", the other a direct strike from one man. Other than "something" being cut, and that swords were somehow involved, it can't really be compared.

Is Mihawk the best Haki user though since we know Shanks has some of the most formidable Haki shown. Your argument doesnt account for his seemingly inferior Haki, just what he can do with the sword. He never said Mihawk was the best Haki user, just that Mihawk has shown no proof that he is unable to use haki. The only ways we currently have of seeing proof are:

A) Striking a logia
B) Knocking out weaklings
C) People saying "It's haki!"

Thus, because we have never seen Mihawk use haki, it does not equate to him having "no" or "inferior" haki. Whitebeard didn't reveal haki until halfway through the war. Both Kizaru and Aokoji can "probably" use haki (given the quake on platform block they all did), but it was not seen used on fodder. And Ace implied that he also had the king's haki, but we never once saw him use it despite his few displays of battle.

Basically saying I doubt Mihawk has Hakoushou (always spell that wrong I think), but nothing to prove he is without haki.

if shanks is a sworsman then mihawk is stronger for the sole reason that he is called the best .
facts :
  • we've seen shanks using a sword while clashing with WB .
  • we knew that he had been dueling with other swordsmen .
for those saying that shanks is stronger you should just hope that he got a DF and can use other fighting styles which makes him not a swordsman .
because shanks as a swordsman and stronger than mihawk is farfetched .

Uhm, you have to base your argument on actual feats because I noticed your arguments are getting really desperate. Do I have any proof that Mihawk cannot cut the sky? The proof is that he never has done so before. Your question is the same as asking me to prove that Buggy the Clown can't cut the sky. Again, why does Mihawk have inferior Haki to Shanks? Because Shanks has far better haki feats. There were also scans of Mihawk showing surprise that Luffy used Haki on some fodder. This proves that Haki is to be taken seriously and Shanks has more where that came from.

Furthermore, I recall you saying that Whitebeard was not one of the top 10 strongest in one piece and you have said this more than one time. With the recent chapter(s) development, have you changed your opinion? :facepalm

At the same time you had Mihawk on the top ten despite the facts that:

1> Vista was more than a match for him

2> Lower tier Shichibukai were holding him off

3> Buggy toyed with him

4> Luffy evaded him (despite Mihawk apologizing to Shanks that he won't hold back).

5> Diamond Joz punked his World's Strongest Slash early on.

Simply put, Shanks got this one in the bag based on feats and current evidence.

I disagree

Mihawk is miles away from Shanks in haki.
so I guess there's nothing really left to discuss.
Looks to be the case. ;)

I disagree
Why? Would you mind posting your thoughts on that. It seems this is our source for disagreement, that's why Im curious about it.

Shanks has the kings haki, Congratulation. So what now? Haki is a tool and you don't need the same tool to defeat it. It's like saying only gunmen can beat gunmen. Im pretty sure a few swordsmen can beat gunmen as well.

A small example of how things could be: Im very well aware that there are more things to calculate other than swordsmanship and haki in a fight.
Shanks swordsmanship (2) +haki (3) = 5
Mihawk swordsmanship (6) +haki (0) = 6

Once a rival and stuff, but loosing a arm should affect your swordsmanship.

I remember this argument. Im still with my opinion; the weather was gloomy since Mihawk approached Shanks. It would seem their will be soon a fight, so Oda created that gloomy weather. But it turned out to be just a fun drinking party, so a fast switch from gloomy to bright. Oda did that to make the scene more better, so he switched the weather.

What are you assuming here anyway? A DF?

hm.. so? I can't remember Mwk going after him with the intent to kill him.

http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/567/16/ why aren't people falling in unconscious heaps all around him?
Why are you asking me this? When did I EVER claim that Mihawk can use haki, without stating "assumption"? Anyway why aren't dudes A-G (Panel 4) falling unconscious?

Answer in both cases (if Mwk could use haki): they are not common cannon fodder.

I wouldn't say perturbed, to me it seems more like that was unexpected to him. Anyawy, there are countless other high tier noticing that. Not sure what you are trying to point out here.

You are putting vs, yet not even bothering yourself to mention certain some1 title.

We didn't see any real battle with Shanks. You cannot argue based on "evidence".

Do you have any proof that Shanks can cut an ice mountain? No.

So I don't get your point.

Luffy faced off the three admirals, hit Garp, evaded Sengoku...

If you argue that Mihawk is weak because of Buggy, I would say that Shanks is weak because of Higuma. I really don't get your point.
