Simple it's shanks for the win simply because he has king haki.Unless stated mihawk has one too, than it's a different story..

Forgetting something guys? When Mihawk came to talk to Shanks, he said ¨I'm not intrested in fighting you since you lost your hand¨. Which meens, they used to fight over 10 years ago. Shanks must've gotten 10 times stronger since then, as his a Yonkou now etc, or atleast i'd think he has. My opinion here would be, Mihawk and Shanks might be equal against eachothers, but first put Mihawk VS Whitebeard for example, and after that Shanks VS Whitebeard. Who would have a better chance against him? I'd say Shanks as i highly doubt he only uses his sword in combat, but also some other skills. Oh well, guess we see more about his skills in the next chapter anyway.

well it can be reversed .
i call it mihawk just because he is called THE BEST SWORDSMAN IN THE WORLD if it wasnt stated that shanks is the best then mihawk will still own by a serious effort .

I wasn't aware King's haki was all it took?

By this ranking Hancock and Luffy are the second and third strongest beings on the planet after Shanks because they possess the ability to k.o weaklings.

When did k.o'ing underlings ever translate into being a "win-all-battles-ever" ability?

this isnt a deffence nor offence but .
he didnt say shanks was the first strongest on the planet .
you kind of tend to corner people by their own words now i believe that you know that he meant that shanks besides being an excellent fighter he has kings haki like WB for instance . despite being anonymous you dont have to interpret someones statement too straight .

I can picture Shanks beating an Admiral in a fight
but
I can't picture Mihawk beating an Admiral in a fight

I think Shanks and Mihawk are similar to Luffy and Zoro. They are both very strong in their own right but there is a reason Shanks is a Yonkou and Luffy is a Captain.

When did haoshoku, the ability the marines shit themselves over and put Akainu into murderous freight train mode, translate to an ability that only KOs underlings?

It's certainly not an auto-win, but ruling it out as only for knocking out fodder is ridiculous. If that's all it did, then why would Doberman need to warn his men to take Luffy seriously? They had already withstood the fodder blast, what more would they have needed to be cautious of?

Well..The way i look at it, effort and technique doesn't necessarily equals to power.Just look at luffy. He has techniques and efforts but not enough power.Even kizaru comments that without power you can't win a battle to luffy.I'm sure mihawk uses haki along with his sword techniques even though the manga never stated he has haki.Just look at at the sword fight between Vista and Mihawk. They're almost on equal footing. And also Akainu commenting at vista being a haki user.So -

Shanks+good sword technique+king haki
Mihawk+best in the world tecnique+good haki
both are intelligent and determined
So who do you think gonna win?

I'm just saying Shanks got an edge cuz he got king haki and it'll be close one if they ever duke it out again.Just my imo:amuse

This is a discussion and all those things were said hundreds of times in extensive argumentations over the last couple of pages. How about reading those first? Simply said, it's troublesome to see the same people here post the exact same things again and again. They won't change their opinions anyway.

Counter question: What does it help Shanks to be able to fight Logia, fighting Mihawk? Who said Mihawk has some kind of Haki? The will to win or attain some goal seems to be overlooked like always. Luffy's determination is one of the most significant reasons for Luffys strength and has to be for others too.
It's simply not possible to say who would win till we see Shanks fight for "once". I just can't accept some random list of powers as an argumentation, sorry.

you know haki is just a bonus a desert against sword holders like mihawk only the swing and its force count regardless if its haki or not in short haki is a power to counter logia .

So are Kuja arrows effective against those rocks because the rocks are weaklings that get KO'd or because the rocks are logia users?

Again, if hitting logias and knocking out fodder is all it did, then why would Doberman warn his men about Luffy?

What I'm saying is this:

Haki - lots of practability. Allows you the hit logias, break rocks with arrows, increase your defence and predict attacks to a certain degree.

King's Haki - probably all of the above plus K.O'ing weaklings

My point is: we're making A LOT of Hakousho haki, but the only thing different I've seen it do is K.O weaklings. So when someone says "oh but he has king's haki so he's better than those normal haki weaklings" I can't really see that relation.

I mean, King's haki is most likely the "greatest" of haki "types" (if there are more than 2 types?), but how much greater? We can't tell. For all we know it's really just normal haki with the K.O ability.

And Doberman warned his men for obvious reasons. I'm sure if someone could keep a haki blast like that going he could knock out some more middle range fighters rather than just low range. Or perhaps keep them knocked out for longer? Lots of reasons why a commanding officer would warn his underlings about a guy who can K.O you from 2 kilometres away. Wouldn't it be stranger if he said "Oh look Hakoushou. Everyone relax"?

@ Dark lord: I did take his words literally. "simply because he has king's haki" is what I'm arguing against. I can see no solid evidence in One Piece to prove this is a dealbreaker in battles.

So a question: if two fighters are equal in every way, but one has normal haki and one has king's haki, would the king's haki user win?

but they arent equal, mihawk is stronger than shanks, was stated by oda in the begin of the series when he made the relationship between zoro and mihawk special.

True shanks has a huge and powerfull crew, dominating the new World, and mihawk is alone with a small ship doing whatever he wants, doesnt mean shanks is stronger than mihawk in 1 versus 1, especially when mihawk was clearly stated as the most powerfull swordsman, and shanks was his rival.

That assumes Rayleigh has Haoshoku, we don't know that yet. Hachi just described it as haki.

That sounds to me like what you're saying. "Mihawk isn't weak or a logia so Haoshoku doesn't matter."

It is completely illogical to say Mihawk would without a doubt beat Shanks in a fight. Mihawk tried to measure his strength against Whitebeard just to be blocked by Jozu, was held off by Vista, and Crocodile. Shanks was shown to be EQUAL to Whitebeard and would make fodder off Jozu, Vista, and Crocodile.

Look at professional fighting like Mixed Martial Arts. One guy can have the best Muay Thai and lose to a guy who has other abilities.

well being a D and the son of dragon and occasionally turning the table on the world governement and one thing akainu acknowleged luffy from the begining .
i dont know but this topic isnt about any kind of kings haki but shanks's king haki .

2 weeks without i-net, now back xD

Which contradicts the series, as Mihawk says something like "it's not funny to fight a one-armed man like you". I think that this is the same Databook that stated that Whitebeard didn't loose any power with age, which we know is not true... at least, I would take the series first.
Tough it depends in how you read the words in a context. Power and strength could be also referred to crew fighting power, not necessarily the fighting power of ones own. So while WB's fighting power decreased over the years, his crew (+alliance fleet) power mustn't has.

So while Im sure the power/strength statement in the red datebook regarding Shanks meant him and not his crew, Im not sure about WB. Gotta google for that.

Mihawk tried to measure his strength against Whitebeard just to be blocked by Jozu, was held off by Vista, and Crocodile. Shanks was shown to be EQUAL to Whitebeard and would make fodder off Jozu, Vista, and Crocodile.
I rly hate this comparison..

1. Shanks is not a Whitebeard without moustache.
2. Oda is holding Mwk for his big battle with Zoro.
3. Shanks wouldn't be able to beat Vista, Jozu or Croco in a few seconds. Same goes for Whitebeard.
4. Imo There is a difference in being an "equal" and being on "equal grounds". I think to be equal means fights ending with draws while equal grounds means to win/lose close. So by my understanding of words Shanks is on Whiteboards equal grounds, but no way in hell his equal. If anyone then it is Garp for me, but nvm that's a different discussion.
5. That clash was not a fight.

Look at professional fighting like Mixed Martial Arts. One guy can have the best Muay Thai and lose to a guy who has other abilities.
Agreed. That said, you can't be the strongest swordsman with just the best swordsmanship.

Shanks must've gotten 10 times stronger since then, as his a Yonkou now etc
Shanks is a Yonko cause he leads the Red-Haired Pirates. Beside that the title puts Shanks on high tier lvl, which I assume no-one ever doubted since 432. We are talking about a one vs one between two high tier lvl fighter, so in a discussion like this that title is pretty much useless.

Simple it's shanks for the win simply because he has king haki.Unless stated mihawk has one too, than it's a different story..
Basically you are saying only swordsman can beat swordsman, only gunmen can beat gunmen etc. But that's quite wrong, the manga contradicts that.

Looks like Mihawk backed down to me. Not saying he was scared, just that he would lose.

No, bittman said the only think haoshoku has over regular haki is KOing weaklings, you said haki is only good for logia. Which would you apply to the rocks and trees blown up by Kuja arrows?

Yes, Shanks's haoshoku, which is why I'm discussing it.

It might be hard to argue that he backed down as opposed to simply refusing to fight his friend on the navy's orders. However I don't think this would be a credible threat if Mihawk alone could take out the strongest among them
