Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

I clearly need to re-read the manga :sweat I forgot those details! :shakefist Still, despite all that, she's still kickass and I love her.

I was starting to like Armin a lot too. I'm sure that from here on out he will only continue to be developed and become even more likable. I'd like to see even more development for Eren as well.
I agree, their development will be quite interesting :thumbs
so far both are "just" typical protagonist and I hope they will be more unique in the (near) future.
As of now, Mikasa is the most interesting one but as Kaiten mentioned it bugs me that Eren is her main driving force. If he's really gonna die (even though I doubt it), she's doomed too. I hope she will find other things/people she can form bonds with, so that she doesn't lose her will to live if anything happens to Eren!

On another note: I'm quite curious why Shingeki has become such a great hit in a short amount of time. Sure it's a good and very interesting story but not as stunning as the sales make it look like, at least not in my opinion. So any guess why it has become such a big seller? And do you think there's any chance that it will get as popular as "Naruto", "FMA" or even "One Piece"?

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

It could be the current chapters that Edited Mangas have yet to catch up to that made it even more awesome and thus such a hit ;) Right now, I like the series but, like you, it hasn't struck me in the same way series like FMA or OP has, at least not yet.

I think it definitely has the potential to reach Naruto or FMA-level of popularity and sales, but OP...? Can't really say at this point. It's a possibility, but that's a really tall order to ask of any series.

I like Armin. I was glad to see him gain more confidence, he'll make a great strategist. Eren has been a titan for two volumes, so I don't fault him for being a little underdeveloped. I expect he'll be central to the story from here on out.

It sounds weird but I was convinced that Mikasa would die. I know it's gone slightly cliche now, but the artwork is a good mix of Tabata Yoshiaki (Wolf Guy), Mori Kouji (Holyland) and Hayashida Q (Dorohedoro). Anyway, my favourite character is a mystery to me right now, we're far too early in the storyline.
I was worried for a second, but kind of figured she'd survive. Mostly because she is on the cover of volume 4 :p

The art definitely reminds me of Dorohedoro (don't read the others). Isayama's art is clearly influenced by alternative manga. His style reminds me a little of Nihei and Igarashi Daisuke too. That is how Shingeki first caught my attention: a shounen with alternative style art is very rare. The only other one I can think of is Neuro.

I don't think she is reliant on Eren at all. Mikasa is supposed to be the stronger of the two, selected for the more elite squad. Standing up to the kidnappers when they were children inspired her, but she does not seem to rely on him for strength. She led the rescue at the armory while he was presumed dead. What I was referring to is her actions when she was first informed he died. She went berserk, taking risks one would not expect of a soldier from the rear guard corps. In some ways understandable, she had been raised as her sister.

On another note: I'm quite curious why Shingeki has become such a great hit in a short amount of time. For me it's the intensity. Since the end of volume one the characters have been in a life or death situation and they know it. As the plot develops there is a lot I want to know. Why can Eren turn into a titan and what does that imply about the real titans? Who is Eren's father and what is his role? Is there more to the titans than meats the eye, or are the just another species? Character development will come, Isayama did such a good job with Mikasa I expect the same for Eren and Armin.

Don't forget, we have only read 12 chapters. Ed and Al were still fighting the guards at lab five in chapter 12 of FMA. The Homunculus had barely been introduced, only Lust and Gluttony had even appeared, and had not been fully explained yet. Father and Hoheneim were still at least 20 chapters off. It might be to soon to start comparing Shingeki to FMA or OP.

Volume three was the first to reach number one on the charts, we are right at the part where it got big in Japan. I'm not sure what the latest chapter is, but I am sure there are still less than 25 total.

Naruto and FMA are already within reach. It probably will take an anime to get there, if it ever does at all. It will never catch OP though. There may not ever be anything that catches OP.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

I am looking forward to seeing more of Eren. Due to circumstances, he did not get much development in volume two. Now that his powers are known, I want to see what direction his character takes. I am assuming their will be more to him than the typical hot headed shounen hero.
I think there's potential of his personality going dark... or that there will be conflicting emotions within him, as was with Naruto (though Naruto is such a positive happy force it was never a problem for him). He's going to be somewhat of a monster now, and we don't know what Titan blood is doing to screw him over. He might get a twisted sense of justice, or a disease that develops and drives him desperate, or simply corrupted by power or something.

There's a lot of plot openings for him turning Titan and the mangaka can twist them any way we don't expect for some awesome full-blown WTF chapters. :nuts

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

It would be really cool if turning into a Titan had after effects. We know he's effected by memory loss after turning into a Titan. If it started effecting his personality that would be awesome. I think he really could become more of a dark, angry person after repeatedly using his titan powers. Maybe the more he uses his power, the less control he has over when he turns into a titan. As of volume three he has no control over himself as a titan, I wonder if he ever will. Maybe the best he can do is turn into a berserker who attacks friend and foe alike. Whatever happens, I expect his power to be a source of internal struggle - possibly more dramatic than Naruto and kyuubi.

I am about to start volume 3, and I have to ask is that the last scanned volume? Loving the story so far we know so much yet so little it feels to me, of course I have to read volume 3 so that I can have a full opinion on what is known to every other reader. :)

Yes, volume three is the last translated volume. Volume four was released in Japan about a week before Edited Mangas of volume four came out. Volume five does not come out until the fall, unless someone else picks it up that there will long gap between releases.

So we only have to wait for a translation of volume four? Which should be soon?

Could be soon, volumes have been about a month/month and a half apart. After volume four there are still uncollected chapters, probably around five or six chapters.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

Well, volumes are released about as fast as I can translate them.:p
Given that I have several work-intensive projects (Wolfsmund and Sakuranbo Syndrome among others) to take care of, all I can do is ask for your understanding and patience.

Now about Eren and his transformation thing, I think it's obvious what the drawbacks are already. Presumably he'll gain more control over it by the time Armin is done, but it does hurt him to go Titan mode. Plus there's the off chance that he might become disgusted with himself when he finds out the ugly truth about what his father did to him. Oh, and as mentioned above, he'll always be regarded as a loose cannon by all but the most open-minded and his closest friends. Which might help alienate him all the more.
As for Mikasa, I doubt she'll just go kill herself if Eren dies (which I believe is likely). After all, she did come to the conclusion that she wouldn't be able to entertain the memory of him if she herself passed away.

Plus there are several other things that need consideration: what about conflict with the vengeful outcast humans? Internecine war within the human race might turn out to be a bigger problem than even the nastiest Colossal Titan. Pixis did hint at that in a not-so-subtle way, after all.

The funny thing is, even Isayama, the mangaka, thinks the same thing as you do.
From mouth to mouth, and then become no 1 in Kono manga ha sugoi! 2010 and 2011 kinda blow up the manga's name value. And more known the manga, more people buying it.
Isayama even feel bad for this, while he knows other mangaka that he thinks have done harder and better than him, but not succeed. Like he said, he still haven't vomit out blood yet in doing the manga, so he doesn't think he deserve this.

And I thought one more of deathtoll after Marco, but looks like Lyner is not that weak. I kinda amazed on how he able to break free from the female giant's grab.
The female giant stopped when Armin said about "his friend who rush to die", his best friend killed by the female giant. I wonder if it means the female giant know about Armin and Eren? Although the last page when she went to the center-back of the formation (where Eren is) may only means I think too much.
Irvine told different location on Eren whereabouts to the units, so I guess he's anticipating traitor in the army itself. Can't wait for the next chapter.

That much was clear from ch20, where two giants Hanji was experimenting on were murdered... What I wonder is who it is, as I have a feeling it's someone we know...

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

Volume 4 was good, but the middle was a bit of a let down after volume three and four. The basic training flashbacks were a little boring and some of the art seemed unfinished, a bit like the beginning of the Chimera Ant arc in HxH. Fantastic set up for the last chapter. The aftermath felt that much more brutal after getting to know the characters a bit better. Chapter fourteen was fantastic, especially Levi showing up at the end. Otherwise Sasha and her potato, Annie curbstomping Eren, and Jean's resolution to join the scouts were highlights. Over all I am glad these chapters came out as a single batch. Chapter sixteen and seventeen would have been a let down if there were a month wait between them.

I felt the same, the flashback bored me. But there were parts that were interesting. I think, the chapters were more about the reasons/motivation/resolutions of these characters.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

To be honest I'm somewhat more impressed at the move the author did with this development of the chapters, showing the flashbacks. Reason being precisely as Kaiten has pointed out it made the impact of the assault so much more devastating. This was especially good for me since lets face it the manga has so many deaths going on left and right that at the point before the flashbacks I honestly did not care about the characters dying since they appeared pretty anonymous. Its only now that they appear to be more solid and in turn making things much more impacting that it helped to make the decisions of the survivors inevitable as they couldn't just run away from it not after experiencing the loss Eren and Mikasa had experienced as kids for themselves with familiar faces lost.

Even better when you consider the economy of the story telling - while I think the training background of them as students seem pretty run of the mill by opting to focus on it now than earlier they get to kill two birds with one stone you get further background during more "peaceful times" as well as flashbacks that try to make the loss more personal for the characters since this is a memory they all pretty much share. I'm actually quite happy with the way things were happened, though I do strongly agree more glad that the Edited Manga opted to release these chapters together in a batch rather than disjointed.
