They have a river as far as I know. Remember Chapter 2? That ship that carried Eren, Mikasa and Armin away from Shiganshina? There has to be a river. XDD

That doesn't mean they swam in the river. I live in a city with three rivers (and riverboats too). No one would go swimming in the rivers. Creeks maybe, but not actual rivers.

The water is literally the worst place they could be when titans attack. They're likely to be trained to stay *away* from water.

I recall seeing a river going through the City on one of the info pages... that's to be expected, because that's how they go about being self-sufficient with the food-production stuff within the Walls, and that's how humans choose to base and develop their settlements...

The point of the question was whether they would be able to swim. I think considering the nature of their enemy, the skill wouldn't mean much to them. The only way swimming might be useful to them as soldiers is if they could hold their breath and hide underwater for a long time, and even then that's not exactly the best strategy.

That said, have we actually seen people using stealth tactics against titans? I don't mean things such as ambushes, but trying to sneak past them in daylight or such? I don't think anyone is really trained to do that, lol.

I don't know but I always get this idea that the titans can sense the gathering of humans... like how they built those concentrated towns within the walls, or the titans homing in on their position when Jean and co. gather at the tower; the titans also home in on a concentration of soldiers (the ones holding rifles) right before trying to refill their gas. And with Eren's block-gate-with-rock place, they specifically ask to gather in one place so the lesser number in Eren/Rico's team would go unnoticed... For that reason, I think stealth is very much impossible if they have some way of sensing human presence :/

Yet Ymir also suggests that Armin was mistaken (during the Battle of Trost) for a Dead Body (Chapter 5, page 17).

That stuck out because of what we know about her from later on.

How do Titans see and sense humans?

Yeah, that is certainly what it feels like while you read manga/watch the anime. It depresses me whenever I think how much humans are useless against titans without years of rigorous training and even then the chances of dying are high.

Nothing will save you from titans. They are attracted to you, they will follow you to the end of the world with a never ending creepy smile on their face. There is nothing you can do about it. Running won't work, hiding won't work, you would just be delaying the inevitable. And in the end, you are always going to end up with half of your body inside one's mouth, the dull teeth deeply embedded into your skin, looking at its monstrous grin, knowing you can offer no resistance. And to make matters even worse, your death will likely not be a meaningful one, nor would it happen for a reason. You would die undeservedly, just because the atrocity that is eating you "feels like it".

If that is not horrifying, I don't know what is.

You know, I'm wondering about something...is there some kind of one child policy here in SnK-verse? As far as I remember, I haven't heard of any characters related by blood at all other than their parents.

@Themistocles
OMG. I totally forgot how Armin went unnoticed by Titans after Eren got eaten. Is it because he was kind of in a vegetable state of some
sort back then? Maybe Titans avoid eating people who are in a trauma state or something. I mean remember that kid that Sasha saved in her home village? That Titan just pretty much ignored her. Or maybe Titans don't eat people in a consecutive manner.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is, considering there's a limit to how many can live within the Walls and/or how much food/etc can be grown, found or raised there. Then again, they're also living in a mediveal-ish society, which might mean high mortality rates among the children, meaning not all that many (compared to modern standards) live to an adult age...

Armin had his grandfather (though that may be anime-only? I can't remember)...

I don't know why, but most major shounen personalities come from single or no-parent homes. In this series we just got to see what it was that caused this in the case of our three main characters. Meanwhile, any possible link to other family members is very very rarely explored. I wouldn't put much to this happening in SnK, especially considering it's supposed to be only 100 years since they settled inside the walls and many people probably lost whole families in the process.

Interesting. I hope this truly is an intentional thing where people in "shock" (or a state similar to the "mindless" titans?) don't get noticed. Because then that's how the titans sense humans, isn't it?

So if you don't want to be caught by them, you should try meditating to clear your mind. (half joking) :p

Well if they could hook onto Reiners armor, then why couldn't they hook on the wall as well.
I'll bring it over to this thread 'cos it'll be easier without the spoiler tags.
But yeah, I've been thinking the last time you guys talked about this.

I think the 3DMG is shot into the part where Reiner doesn't have armour?

On an unrelated note, error in drawing on Isayama's part :P

Reiner's arms are down, but before and after they should be covering his neck.

Ah! You did what I was thinking about the anime thread. I also wondered if the hooks just got into the gaps in Reiner's armor but I couldn't tell for sure. (I still think it's at least somewhat different material though, either way.) :p

When Eren is eaten by the Female Titan
Manga:

Anime:

Me: me no like anime Mikasa. Face is too anime normal standard moe...:gwah

Really. Seriously. I'm now wondering how they'll do that face with Mikasa trying to convince Eren to fight Annie again. It's too standard-anime-ish(well, it is anime) moe normal.
Come to think of it, somebody drew a face comparison of anime Mikasa and manga Mikasa XD:

I don't know...I mean it seemed like they pretty much started limiting things when Wall Maria fell. They have doctors as well...but it's not exactly a guarantee either...The reason why I'm asking this is because remember that two kids when the Survey Corp returned from the 57th expedition? You know, when Eren started to cry after remembering that he was just like those children every time the Survey Corps returned. Yup, those two children seemed like siblings. But none of the main and important characters are blood siblings at all. :s

@kannazuki
Armin's grandfather was mentioned in the manga, but he never made an appearance. Presumably, he is already dead long before the attack on Wall Maria. But by I mean blood-related, I mean sibling blood-related anyway. XD

@Utsune
I actually noticed that second image too! I thought it was pretty weird. It's probably going to be fixed in the volume versions(I know there's a term for this in Japanese. Is it tankobon?).

With the first image, yep, I'm pretty sure that's the part where there's no armor...
Manga Armored Titan in Color:

The Anime Armored Titan seems to be a little different compared to the manga. It doesn't look like there's any armor that's covering it's neck area. BUT! It could be that the nape precisely is probably covered with armor. OR, he could just as create a hardened skin/armor on his nape like the Female Titan.

Yeah, I agree anime Mikasa is too cutesy. I have seen this done to one of my favourite male characters as well. I guess they figure moe-fying the characters makes them more likeable/lovable to a general "mainstream" audience (using the term very loosely here), but I liked them better the way they were. T_T

SnK wikia is kind of useless for manga references right now but they *claim* Armin's grandfather was on the boat with him. I also seem to remember *from the anime (sorry)* Armin's granddad putting a hat on his head before he went to join the phony "reclamation" effort.

I don't know why more people don't have siblings, but it could just as easily be an unspoken cultural understanding people have, not to *consume* too much of what they've been allotted within the walls by having more children. Just because it's kind of a storytelling faux-pas to hide world-building details like a "one child rule" and spring them on people later for no reason when there was every reason to bring it up at the beginning of the story (or at least during Mikasa's flashback of how she ended up with the Yeager family).

I always wondered why everyone is an only child. No one mentions aunts or uncles. Hell, Jean is from Trost and he didn't mention his family at all. Armin is left in the care of his grandfather but I thought he died when the government sent everyone to fight the titans and 250,000 people were killed.
They need a lot of people to go fight the titans since men and women are easily killed, I can see the military branch influencing people to join the military by using lots of propaganda. But yeah, at the same time it would be a problem to have too many people since you gotta feed them all and there isn't enough food going around.

Maybe it's just convenient for Isayama for story telling purposes. Sometime you just gotta say "Because the author wanted it that way.period" idk.

First impression is limitation in resources as you say. Truth be told, most of the cast don't look all the rich to me (with the exception of maybe Grisha,) raising more than one kid is most likely a financial burden, if not for the sake of carrying on the lineage. I'm not so sure about needing a lot of people to fight the titans, at least 5 years ago. The peace generally cuts off any interest in joining up with the scouts, not to mention the Royal Govt banning information with regards to the outside world. In any case, even if they wanted more people in the present, the siblings of the children are at most 5 years old or something.

That aside, to be honest I always get the impression that Reiner and Annie may be siblings :P They have similar nose shape and blond hair... But that's merely an impression.

I still say a lack of nuclear families (or siblings, or a parent) is a common thing in shounen in general, and there is a tendency not to explain this within the text. :p

Actually, it's pretty common for a shonen anime/manga to have an important character that has at least one blood-sibling. At least the popular ones that is. A lot of parents are there too, except they're either dead, missing or having a vacation somewhere. Grisha comes into mind.

Parents being dead, missing, or "having a vacation somewhere" is exactly what I'm talking about though. :XD And then on top of that, a lot of them just don't have siblings, perhaps because the one (or both) parent(s) went missing or something separated them too early in the character's life. Who knows.
