What exactly would that do though? If its against berholt that thing won't stop him from kicking the gate to the next century. He probably wounds his leg even without those things being there anyways. As for reyner, the guy is completely covered in armor. Even if those things get past the armor it still won't actually stop reyner from crashing at top speed into the gate and breaking it. Its not like taking damage from the spikes is relevant to him. His job is to simply ram the gate, taking damage or not is not an issue here.

I wasn't thinking about the cannons and the spikey wire, but the live wall of titans that Reiner couldn't break through to get to the gate. Also, some titans would turn around to attack him and posibly pin him down. Together with cannons and soldiers, I don't think he would have even tried it, even if Eren didn't transform. Seems too risky to me, after all that planning and time that they RBA invested in this mission.

The titans would only have been an issue if for whatever reason reyner and berholt took too long to act. During the first attack the two of them got the walls quite fast, it is this one time where they actually stopped on their own for whatever reason. Even then, several titans are not actually enough to actually stop reyner. Just look at the current situation in the manga, he is just sending them out flying. In a wall breach scenario there would be too many humans for that many titans to even focus on reyner to begin with. I guess it is plausible titans would interfere but that would only work that way if they really take too long to aim for the second wall.

@kkck: Failing to accomplish some of the things you try doesn't make you a "loser," though. If the manga is about failure, it has to be collective failure, not every individual thing each individual character tries and maybe fails at. Every half-decently drawn character has personal failings after all, so that's not exactly something that stands out about this series. Did Isayama reference failure as a major theme at some point? Did he call it a central theme? More importantly, has he explained what it is he's trying to say about failure? I think the manga is structured well enough that it should have a tighter story "argument" to it (aka a "moral") than just being "about failure." Failure could certainly be involved in whatever the central theme is, but we still know so very little about what's really going on, it's hard for me to figure whether the setbacks we've seen people experience so far are the "point," or if they're leading us somewhere else.

Nice! And have you guys noticed that the background from each cover (the wall) gets darker / cracks more every volume? Check it out...
I think the biggest difference's between vol. 2 and vol.3. Hard to compare between 3 and 4 though (since it's almost all covered up by those three boys)

OT: and I only just realized they've changed the title for those yonkoma back in ep. 14..

Ooooh... Kunren Heidan --> Chousa Heidan. This sounds promising. :)

Now I want to go back and find those 4koma...

Hey, everyone! I haven't watched the anime yet, and I was wondering where it would end off or where you think it would end at if it's still ongoing.

Also what's the general consensus of the anime? Is it worth watching in addition to reading the manga?

@Asarii
It would end at the Female Titan Arc. Specifically, around the chapter, "The Wall." And parts of the chapter after that will probably be included.

According to the author(or at least, from what I hear), the anime is what he calls the complete version of his manga up until the FT arc.

General consensus=Great! Go watch it. XD
Though for me, there are some annoying changes done in the anime that's different from the manga. But overall, for an average fan, it's mostly ignorable.

Funnily enough, over the months the 'anime SnK' has become somewhat a controversial topic from a certain pinnacle of epicness. I'm going to speak from my stance.

The thing with manga is, there are certain emotions that cannot be expressed through still panels alone. For this reason, the time dedicated to each action, camera panning, and other production qualities are all very meaningfully suggestive. Long speech short, you get a better insight into certain events.

Then again, anime 9 times out of 10 imposes a limit due to production, whether in cutting up the storyboard into evenly sized episodes with two cliff-hangers each, or in retaining the interest of viewers differently as you would for, in effect, a more 'patient' manga reader. This results in differently ordered events, with certain bits omitted. Some are neither noticeable nor consequential, though depending on your analysis of the manga, you may find some important bits missing from your expectation.

As implied by the author, Isayama-sensei worked decently close with the anime staff. He suggested adding certain emotions and fine details that he wasn't able to include in the original, as well as some anime-original scenes. Though there was one particular scene to which he admitted reluctance, stating it was a difficult choice between "canon to the original setting" and "production values," he ultimately gave in to the latter.

In general, different people take the anime differently. Some take it as a fake a divergence from the manga reality (due to a very few scenes,) while others accept it as a truer representation of the universe Isayama-sensei wants to portray. To me, there isn't so much about being canon to the manga or not, because I don't think this is what this show is about (for the sake of the 'main' plot, the anime is true to the manga.) It isn't so much about 'closely following the manga,' but rather it is 'an extension to the manga.' This serves as my main reason for highly recommending the anime, as the whole production livens the characters in the SnK universe in a very powerful way. That aside, I'm a big music geek, and Hiroyuki Sawano has done an amazing job on the scores, as per usual.

Finally, there are 25 episodes, with a 13.5 in between as a recap episode. We're on Episode 23 now, about to fight the Female Type Titan for the second time. To be honest, I don't know precisely where it would end lol, but we would probably see through to her crystalisation.

@Asarii: For the most part I think the anime has done a great job. Until recently my only complaint was about the pacing of the anime seeming to drag a lot as compared to the manga. As of the last few episodes-- starting with Levi's reaction to his squad members' deaths, but now especially with Annie-- I haven't been happy with the anime's portrayal of emotion. Even if it's what the author will always claim he wanted. That said, again, it's mainly very well done on the technical side, with excellent voice acting, soundtrack, and so on.

Utsune, I strongly disagree on your first point (speaking generally about still vs. motion picture media here). As explained and expanded upon in great detail in Scott McCloud's books Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics (which are great for those interested in some perspective on storytelling in any medium-- not just comics/manga),manga (or any serial still image/panel-based storytelling medium) and anime (or any motion picture-based storytelling medium) simply have different ways of expressing emotion. Perhaps people like it better or are more comfortable with having more of their senses engaged at a time (for me it depends on the story in question which version has it better), but manga are able to give us *precise* facial expressions up to the *precise* moment for each character, without watering them down with all the far less important movements a character must go through in order to get from one of those expressions to another and still appear natural. Soundtrack music picks up the slack a little, but this too has its limits. Each has its strengths, so it's going to tend to come down to which medium was most effectively utilized, plus personal taste.

@Asarii: Absolutely recommend it, I think the anime is incredible. I've read the manga, and the anime does the manga more than justice it is just incredible. Attack on Titan was an incredible story to begin with so I knew the anime would be something to look out for, but I was blown away by what I was given. Watch this anime, I have very few complaints, one of them is recent but Its not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The animation is fantastic, the music is amazing, and its very faithful to the manga. definitely watch it, I can't recommend it enough to be honest.

I apologise if I make manga sound inferior by omitting any compliments on the medium, because that is not what I mean. I do agree manga and anime have their own way of portraying the same event. Furthermore, it is usually true that manga is drawn so that each key frame is allocated a valuable panel. And before I go on, I do believe ultimately to each their own; it is a fact that some people cannot process one medium as well as another. I may have chosen the wrong word by saying "emotion" in my last comment, what I really mean by emotion is something more elaborated and grey-shaded than what you definitively see in manga.

While the so-called 'transition frames' in anime 'water down' key expressions, manga works in a way that the so-called 'unnecessary frames' are taken out and is thus 'watered down' in a sense. The former is giving you extra information, some of which may not be considered as important as the other, but the key frames are still there; the latter is giving you the specific information, while all important, they do not tell you when a character blinks in between panel. In anime you may be experienced enough to allow yourself to selectively intake information, choosing to value key frames only and, in effect, nothing is watered down. Though I may sound pedantic, I fully acknowledge that in some anime such as SnK, even a blink from a character is solidly reasoned. As a hoarder of information, the reasoning behind a blink is the extra bit of presentation I take to heart. The same logic applies to how the background music is expertly positioned and aligned with certain frames and dialogues. These are often overlooked and under-appreciated, but every single decision is a result of carefully planning. In turn, this 'planning' contributes to the full message of the certain scene, as interpreted by the staffs.

Manga indeed gives you the freedom to interpret the scenes however you want, but that does not mean a gain in information. The extra dimensions are only allowed in the form of 'potential,' but they are ultimately generated by your imagination. On the other hand, the anime has already produced a whole set of interpretation for you. The extra dimensions are not so much as 'potential,' but comprehensively produced and presented. These include music, sounds, tone of voice, pitch of voice, length of words, emphasis on words, colours, time taken for actions etc. While some may not like the fixed set of interpretation, the reasoning behind each and every frame is real, no matter how 'disagreeable' or 'cheap.'

Finally some of my personal experience, I cannot count how many times I fail to guess how quickly a character turns their head around. Sure it isn't as important relative to panels before and after, but I believe the speed at which they turn their head around is partially reflective of their mood. Whether there are implications in panels before or after, the fact is, that piece of information is missing from the manga. Anime is an adaptation of the manga, and the interpretation in the speed of their turning head would be at the discretion of the director. Leaves no room for neither your imagination nor other interpretations, yes. Gain one set of solid insight into that scene, also yes. Manga is inferior in giving a full physical description, that part is undeniable. (Potential for interpretation is not a description but a suggestion, in which anime is inferior for allowing potential since everything has been fixed; the scene will be fully acted out in the anime while dismissing your imagination, because this isn't where your imagination is needed.) But I'm making it clear that manga is not inferior in story-telling, since this aspect is not something you compare. And also of course, from an artistic sense, the fact that these extra 'information' is missing does not disrupt the main message a scene in manga tries to express. If I submerge myself in artistic reasoning, then the passage above should have nothing to do with me.

(P.S. In terms of missing information in the anime, the one thing that always gets at me is those "......" speech bubbles because they can't really be sufficiently defined. There's always the difference between "..." and "......", treatment for these in anime are often overridden by things that are actually 'happening.')

Did someone already post some pictures of the Visual Novel (Attack on Titan Side Story: A Choice with No Regrets Prologue)?

I know this scene was mentioned here but the pictures look better than I thought.

"Are you planning to kill me, Levi?"
“Yes, the reason i’m joining Survey Corps, is……..”
" To kill you Erwin "

Not sure if that can be considered canon but I guess I would definitely play the VN if I could :XD

Posted it a couple of pages ago. Around the 67th page, I think? XD.

I will play them. I shall play them....I will get them...XD. Even though I don't know a thing about Japanese...XD.

So guys, did you read the summary points for that Mikasa Gaiden visual novel? I'm just shocked. It sounds like a fanfic. Not by the author, but by Mikasa herself. XD. At least the art looks nice. I kinda expected heavy melons judging from the artist's drawings posted around the net.

Just now, I find shota Eren cute....XD

Waaait, has anybody mentioned this yet?

Nanaba is female wtf??? Is she?? Is he???? Second-coming of Hanji??

I always thought he was a pretty good-looking male model of some sort...... But upon watching Ep20 again...

S/he's voiced by Shimoda Asami.

EDIT: Or am I the only slow one here?

Yep, I had the same reaction as you when I watched ep. 20. I thought Nanaba's gender was yet unknown (though the Shingeki no Kyojin Wiki said Nanaba was female before, I wasn't convinced. It's constantly being attacked by trolls :teehee )
Yet while rereading the manga there were many panels where I could see Isayama had drawn her with breasts. So I assumed she was female since then.
Her seiyuu is female, but she did force her voice a bit to sound a bit more tomboyish... whatever. Nanaba's female. And that's so awesome!

Btw, she totally looks like Brienne from Game of Thrones, only a lot smaller. :derp

Wahahaha is that so? I completely missed it then.
As a male, I'm not a fan of pretty boy characters in particular, but I honestly thought Nanaba was really cool :P
Oh dear, I need to re-brainwash myself with this updated piece of information...

P.S. I think she looks like John Connor from Terminator 2. Dunno if it's the hair or the youth. Perhaps one reason why I mistook her for a dude.

Isayama has been asked repeatedly and for the record, Nanaba's gender is not officially defined. Take your pick. I like to see her as female myself (whether that's cis or trans is not my business), but you can see Nanaba as a guy, or as genderqueer, or whatever you want as long as that's your honest interpretation. Utsune, if you want to see Nanaba as male, then keep in mind her seiyuu appears to have voiced famous male characters before. She sounded like Edward Elric to me, lol...

Lol about eren and armin dying while trying to make a plane. It makes a disturbing about of sense somehow. Thinking about it, I wonder why exactly it is that the guys at shingekiverse don't have a plane just yet. They figured out how to make an army into steam punk spidermans so making planes should not be as complicated. They are already flying around houses, they might as well take the next step. With their harnesses, iron cables capable of supporting people, their ability to store ridiculous amounts of has, it seems like a plane should be well within their possibilities at large. At least zepellins should be a pretty decent option....
