I'd say rather than sarcasm, that was a hyperbolic metaphor... but about the way Before The Fall was dropped I agree that was a shame. From what I read, it looked like it had some interesting world-building potential.

Wait, was this spinoff was actually neglected?? What do you mean specifically by it being dropped? Does that mean nobody wants to translate it? I can't believe even a single scantilator wouldn't even bother to provide even a synopsis of chapter 11-17. They've done 10. They should keep translating. The heroine of this spinoff might be the first human to succesfully kill a titan on his own. He might be more badass than Levi himself. Also I'd find it interesting to see the blonde-haired bastard actually partake in such a historical moment.

You might want to keep checking the Before The Fall thread for the latest on that.

Eren is without a doubt the most good looking one in the cast. I still can't get used to the fact they're all Asians now, how are they gonna explain Mikasa's background? Unless now everyone looks asian while having German sounding names :hmm
I heard that the actress who plays Mikasa is the only one that is not all japanese, maybe they are going about this the other way around, being the japanese the most and the others the few.

Is that so? I guess it makes sense...? Still it would have been interesting if they had more varied people in terms of "races", having one or two Caucasians wouldn't hurt, and before you say that it's impossible there's a good amount of Europeans, Americans, Australians and whatnot in Japan. Maybe they can't all act, but given that LAs aren't exaclty known for their groundbreaking acting performances, I think it's feasable. Well either one works.
It's just weird looking at those characters and knowing what they're supposed to be, because of the importance of races in the manga.

I think tom cruise did a pretty good job of speaking Japanese in the last samurai....6months of practice,i'm sure they could round up a few Caucasians to pull off a script.
I mean hell...they don't have to be fluent.

Yeah that's quite possible, if you avoid the writing system and just learn conversational Japanese it's doable. But then again it prolly would be awkward because you have to hire translators and whatnot. It certainly would be more complicated to hire non Japanese speakers, so it's more logical to just hire Japanese actors. And then change the story accordingly.

idk...I imagine if a guy/gal isn't the star...how many total lines would they have to memorize.
someone like armin or Erwin maybe hard to fill...being blond haired and they talk/explain a lot....
but the rest of the crew are pretty much one-liners:XD

I just saw the trailers and I'm surprised about the bazookas. I don't see the point of it.

It's not a international production like Hollywood did. They make the film for their own country, so they take Asian actors. They won't take white actors, even for a film telling the stories of the Greek Gods.

Or maybe it's a vengeance for Dragon Ball Evolution.

Regarding the trailers for the live-action movie, I'm a little concerned regarding the portrayal of the Titans; to me it looks like actors doing stupid faces. Seriously.
Like the Titan at 1:06-1:07. It just looks bad. But it really looks like they resorted to actors for the Titan bits. I don't know if that was a good idea, but oh well. Guess they won't be all CGI, but I'm not even sure if that's a good thing.

Just want to correct an error I made about the "mystery" exhibit character. I had a look again at earlier posts in this thread from late November where we were talking about people's sketches of the mystery character that was yet to appear in the manga. Somehow my memory did tricks on me and I thought a different image came from back then, which happens to resemble the beast titan a little. But actually it wasn't him. As a reminder, there were no photos allowed at that part of the exhibit, so all we have are sketches from a couple of people who saw it in person.

From Beatrice's post:
From Edukovic's post:
In actual fact, I guess we haven't seen this person turn up yet. It certainly isn't the beast titan.
Isn't that Erwin's father? Or maybe Annie's... Seems like all the fathers look alike now, damn @_@. I fear the Titan origins may be deeply tied with daddy issues.

That's not the picture I remember seeing floating around though. I can't seem to find it at the moment, but I remember that the character drawn - and this was the actual drawing made by Isayama - was pretty much identical to the guy revealed at the end of Chapter 70. Also, the character was wearing a Scouting Legion uniform, I think.

- edit -

Found it!
Hope I'm not confusing things:

-> found here

Where you can also find this supposedly "official" picture depicting Annie and her father:

Hmmm.

Hey Kannazuki, I saw the sketches of the mystery character which hasn't appeared yet in the story. Just to verify here, Anon who is MT is not the mysterious character but just a new character that was introduced. How come there were sketches of Anon and people from other sites saying he's the mysterious character that holds the key? It was my first time seeing those sketches of the mysterious person by the way, accurate drawing.
Actually I thought my memory of it was messed up and I was correcting my "mistake" but apparently it was the same picture I thought it was? Sorry for the confusion. It's too bad those fan drawings of the new character are so inaccurate with the square glasses, wrinkles, and dark hair. This image Eigengrau posted is probably what beast titan guy looked like when he was younger. I had another image of it that I posted in the other thread (before I mistakenly edited that post) which has a book with the same image in it, and a frame, and some text, probably from the same exhibit I guess. The book and stuff were what made me second guess the image since it's not a banner/flag (like you see above).

Here is the image I was talking about, coming from here:

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin: Chapter 71 Discussion / 72 Predictions

What I heard is that it would be about 20 volumes, in average each volume has 4 chapters.
We are currently at the 1st chapter from volume 18. Which leads to 3 more on volume 18, then 4 more on 19 and more 4 on 20, so we got 82 chapters.
Of course it's not a exact science, cos they can change it at their will, but something like it.

Honestly, I'd be pissed if it ended that soon.

It would be Deadman Wonderland and Mirai Nikki all over again. Wtf.

:-_-

I don't know, I mean, I've liked SnK so far, obviously, and if it were to end I think Isayama would pull it off somehow, but I feel like there could be so much more to the story. Like, after all this is "done", we could move on to them going to explore the outside world even further or something.

:/

I just found this article: http://www.japantoday.com/category/entertainment/view/live-action-attack-on-titan-writer-talks-about-changes-from-anime-with-one-demanded-by-creator and their reason for not having Levi in the live action movie is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Seriously. Let's put it this way: fans who whatch the movie and are disappointed and confused because one of their favourite characters is gone? tons. Fans who watch the movie and think Levi shouldn't be in it because Japanese language doesn't have a V? Zero. :no

Seriously. Let's put it this way: fans who whatch the movie and are disappointed and confused because one of their favourite characters is gone? tons. Fans who watch the movie and think Levi shouldn't be in it because Japanese language doesn't have a V? Zero. :no

To "highlight" some of the most remarkable points:

"Given the franchise’s European-inspired setting,
Somewhat debatable, but ok.

[...]many fans in the international community expressed dismay at the idea of Japanese actors portraying ostensibly western characters in the live-action film. It turns out many fans in Japan felt the same way, and let their sentiment be known early in the movie’s development."
This is comprehensible, but what are you gonna do? Find the right actors from other countries, and have them speak Japanese?
Or - even worse - maybe dub the whole thing?

Let's face it, Attack on Titan is not the first manga/anime to have characters and settings that aren't Japanese-related, I don't know why the subsequent live-action adaptations should diverge from that, that's how they do things. Seriously, when has this ever been a problem before? Plus, we know very well how the Japanese are dedicated, it's not just their voices, but their overall acting and dedication to their work. They know this stuff, man, mangas and animes and such, and can really get into it.

I wouldn't mind if they did an adaptation like that, say with German actors (or German-looking), speaking in german and whatnot, but it would lose a lot, I think, if it didn't retain the "original", Japanese language.
ALTHOUGH, I must say, German could be a very nice fit.

Anyone know if there's a German dub, or translated chapters in German?

Taking that into consideration, Machiyama and Higuchi decided the only solution was for their film to take place in an entirely different world than that of the anime and manga.
Lol, that is some good decision making right there.
This is also where most people can stop reading the article.

For a time, Machiyama considered giving everyone in the movie Japanese names, but in the end decided to leave the principal characters’ monikers as they are in the anime,
Sorry, that doesn't make up for creating new characters and giving them other names.

Early on, Machiyama was considering making Levi, by far Attack on Titan’s most popular character, the movie’s central figure. He says the idea was dropped, though, since the letter V, nonexistent in Japanese, and in Machiyama’s opinion rare throughout East Asia, wouldn’t have fit with the Japanese setting, and so Levi was scrubbed from the live-action continuity entirely.
Wow, ain't that *beep* convenient?

Even Isayama himself expressed trouble empathizing with his series’ lead, and so he said that if Eren was going to be the main character of the live-action film, he’d have to have a different personality than he does in the manga and anime.
Right, so this, I don't understand. Isayama-bro-chan, why do you think Shingeki no Kyojin is successful? It has a lot of good things to show, it cleary is an awesome work, and you shouldn't beat yourself over the stuff that you've already made, and which is somewhat already set in stone. I know you're the author, but come on, all those things are what made SnK what it is today, I believe.

Otherwise, what's the point of this movie? Is it for everyone else that hasn't boarded the Attack on Titan hype train? You might as well call the movie "Another Attack on Titan".

Specifically, Isayama wanted Eren portrayed as a normal person with regular fears, which would no doubt include a 120-meter-tall naked giant trying to eat you. As such, Eren’s shonen manga-like personality was tossed, as was his backstory of someone who, as a boy, killed a man to protect his childhood friend, Mikasa.
That's it, keep it up.

edit note: also, *beep* whoever wrote the article, the Colossal is about 60m high, not 120m :|. Unless they changed that too...

Machiyama was initially skeptical of Isayama’s demand to make Eren someone who would be “paralyzed with fear” upon encountering the Titans,
You don't say?

but as production went on, the scriptwriter came around to the idea.
"HA, got you!"

Tonally, that’s a huge departure from the source material, but Machiyama can still draw some parallels between the live-action and anime “Attack on Titan.”
Like looking at a smashed up animal and say "Yeah, I think that used to be an animal..."?

Machiyama says the live-action production team, Isayama included, weren’t going to be satisfied taking the safe route of a direct copy of the original story.
Again, this I don't understand. Why change something that's already so good that has millions of followers already?
Is this how Isayama thinks he can shift the blame for making a crappy live-action movie? By making them do something as unrelated as possible to his original work?

I'm sure there was a better way.

Instead, they’re trying to break out of their comfort zone and create something new and compelling,
Yep. Definitely.

just like the anime’s Eren[...]
I'm sorry, why are they still mentioning Attack on Titan? I forgot what this was about.

*shrug*

I heard they planned on making Eren a lame, scared, Shinji-ish person.

Also, why is everyone Japanese? I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but the walled city is in FREAKING GERMANY!

It's not in "freaking Germany", there's no concrete proof that the world is the same/was the same as ours, so that's one thing.

Also, it's a live-action adaptation of an anime/manga, that is japanese, for all intents and purposes. Like I said somewhere else, of all the things that went wrong with this live-action, citing that the actors "are all japanese" shouldn't be an issue at all.
Or do you think this is the first manga/anime that has characters that don't have Japanese names/aren't supposed to be Japanese?

That's the way things are, and it's a japanese adaptation. Would you rather have actors from other countries that, maybe, aren't familiar with the source material, and have them learn/speak in a not-so-fluent japanese?

Or maybe dub the whole thing, make it even more horrible? They have to be japanese, and they have to speak japanese, or else it would've bombed in Japan, that's for sure.

Also, as you surely know, the setting in the movie isn't the same as the manga/anime, so that's one thing to take into consideration as well.

~

Here's a funny, I think it's old (sorry if I'm re-posting) but worth a laugh:
