Though you're right, back when the series first started an image like that probably would have attracted an more explicit reference/joke.

I think that was more of a "are we really doing this?" kinda thing. Uncertainty/awkwardness and not "I'm between her legs" humor.

I was amazed when I saw the twin's aged Soul Resonance with Kilik.

Okubo-sensei left not only Chrona's sex to the imagination, but also the twin "Pots" as well.

In Chapter 67, Fire is male while Thunder is female. I like the look of both of the twins. Apparently, Fire has several sets of three holes on his arms and chest probably to assist in gaining more heat with the flames by infusing the flames with oxygen. Thunder, on the other hand, doesn't have any holes on her body, as far as I can see.

Fire and Thunder's transformation was great. So was seeing Kilik and Kim fight. Medusa returns to continue her experiment and has her own madness clown. Crona looks older then before, Yet still can't tell the gender.

Okubo-sensei never made an indication as to what sex they were anywhere in the manga since Kilik was introduced. When they are in their younger form, Fire and Thunder do look like girls, but with Kim's magic, you can clearly see that they are not both girls.

The statements (if any) of Fire and Thunder being girls were of someone's erroneous translations.
