I wasn't aware of the del Toro rumors honestly. Where did that come from?

Laura Dern is a interesting choice...wouldn't have guessed that one honestly.

Guess that kinda drowned as it was leaked just around the release of VII, but Del Toro himself accidentally said in an interview for some latino publisher that he was cast in VIII and that he wasn't sure if he is a villain or not, but he thinks he might be a villain.

Laura Dern is a bit random, all I remember her from is the first Jurassic Park.

I winced a bit at Del Toro. For some reason when that man is acting his accent turns into something that is... hard to ignore. Not sure how that's going work in Star Wars which has it's own form speech accents. Like if the role is Imperial can he talk in one of those accents? Can he physically do it?:blink

My brain can't quite imagine it. It would be like Antonio Bandaras speaking in an Aussie accent.

I lowkey hope they include ysalamiri from the Expanded Universe. Great way to present a challenge, as a way to prepare fighting the Jedi/Luke and maybe the Sith.

First off, never use "lowkey" like that again.

Second, I'm sure there are more interesting storylines to go with than a force-blocking animal. The explanation for such a thing would probably go into prequel-science territory.

It can be an obstacle, not a storyline. Main problem is justifying why they weren't used more when there were far more Jedi, but rarity could explain that. Wouldn't take too long.

I don't know...forcing this sort of pseudo-science thing into the series really sucked the wind out of prequel's sails (not that they would have been much better without Midichlorians). The mystical part has always been more appealing.

I also don't see them wasting too much time on an animal that doesn't have much personality and can't easily be turned into an action figure...to be cynical about it.

They don't have to be pseudo-science, just say that they were nearly extinct so they couldn't be used against the Jedi due to how hard it was to find them. Maybe the Jedi played a part in their near-extinction, and now they're not as rare as they used to be. I dunno, it could be a great way to make it harder for Force users or a way to train Rey.

They can always design it to be marketable, though.

Force-blocking lizards? Eh, if they need that sort of plot device in the story, sure. But could pretty easily come out of as too much of a deus ex machina. Not really warming up the idea. Besides, didn't they already establish that Rey is pretty good, or atleast can keep her ground in regular hand to hand combat. And recently learned to fire a laser too. Don't know what purpose force-blocking would serve now.

I'm not really into EU stuff in general. Haven't read much though, a couple of books and comics as a teenager. Didn't find them very good, rather happy with the clean sheet.

What about the Jedi makes you think they'd have a hand in the extinction of a species? :neutral

Dunno if it's really deux ex machina but that really depends on how they tackle it. We can also have opponents that are superior to Rey in a hand-to-hand combat or swordfighting without the Force. But then again, I think it's the EU that made non-Force users like Boba look pretty powerful.

To be frank, apart from few novels, the EU as a whole is not worth the time if you're not a Star Wars otaku. I'd consider myself one, but most of the novels just aren't that good, and they tend to make too many reference to the movies like "He's no good to me dead" or "like my father before me." I do like Mara Jade though, even if she is the female version of Han Solo.

willing to kill a species that would put the galaxy's police in danger? It's not like all Jedi are good or would be good, some could live in the world of gray instead of black and white.

Yeah but anyone who is like that, isn't really considered a Jedi.

I think they're called Gray Jedi, and while they're frowned upon by the order, Quigon was, to my knowledge, one and served alongside Jedi. He leaned a lot more to the light, someone like that would have to lean toward the dark.

It's a matter of semantics honestly. A force user who isn't a member of the Jedi Council and isn't a Sith....do they really need to be called Jedi, or is it more out of convenience?

And to the original point, I'm not sure I see any of the main characters fitting that description anyway.

It's about a practice, I think. Luke called himself a Jedi a long time after the fall of the Jedi Council. Ultimately it's about what you practice, if we go by the expanded universe. Sith aren't always called Sith, for example, but also Dark Jedi. Gray Jedi and just normal ol' good Jedi exist as well.

I meant for the sake of the story that the movies will try to tell. I think it's a safer bet that we won't get "gray" with any of the characters, at least not the Force-users. I'd love to be wrong though.

Well, I was reading about the visual guide to the movie and novelization and the whole grey thing is not much of a stretch. According to the extra information the reason smoke got to Ben was because he thought he had the right balance between light and dark. He is not like the sith who were entirely devoted to the dark side. It's not a stretch that his approach to the force would be about balance although in a twisted way. And that would make sense with a fee themes seen in the clone wars TV series which remain cannon. The Jedi strress detachment from emotions and ties. However that detachment is used by the emperor to make them seem like corrupt and their lack of emotional connections turns out to be a weakness. As in that making them loose focus towards important things. Such as when in rots anakin went to consult with Yoda about his visions he was told that he has to learn to let go rather than help him out to save the life of that person. The first six movies amde the point that the force was out of balance and it was anakins job to restore it, which he apparently did. However by the seventh the force had been in a slumber and then it awakened and is apparently unbalanced again. If perhaps the reason Luke left was because after his new Jedi order was destroyed he wanted to find out more about the force and it being balanced. So you have some with what presumably is a twisted version of balance and Luke trying to find balance of the dark and light side of the force. The original Jedi order was just of the light so naturally they couldn't keep balance on their own.

I'm sort of failing to see how someone could have a balanced approach to using the Force but it being in a twisted way. If he take Quigon, along with the green lightsaber theory, it's obvious why he clashed with the Jedi Council. But that doesn't make him a neutral character. At worst, he'd be considered Chaotic Good, and even that is a stretch. Kylo thus far has appeared to be Lawful Evil to me, which is no different than the typical Sith (albeit my EU knowledge isn't that impressive, and I'm not sure how relevant it is considered it's all been rendered moot as far as we know).

I think it's obvious that The Knights of Ren aren't the Sith, that much has pretty much been established. But that doesn't mean they aren't evil. Any sort of "Gray Jedi" theory would require some sort of redemption on Ren's part. Not sure how optimistic I am about that.

Well, as far as we know qui gon did not look for understanding of the dark side nor used it. IIRC qui gon's issues with the jedi related to his disagreements with them and their way to do things. I wouldn't call qui gon any sort of neutral either.

I am not sure if lawful evil applies to the sith either... Technically they acted according to the law but only on the surface. If we consider the emperor, dooku and vader they always technically acted according to the law but only because by all intents and purposes they were the law (palpatine and vader of the empire and dooku of the confederacy).

My point here would be finally bringing and sustaining balance to the force. Perhaps something like having elements of the dark side without being corrupted by it by using emotions other than hatred (like the sith) to tap into it. Say love, compassion and so on. Take luke, he didn't turn vader from the dark side by being a detached asshole, it was because of his compassion and love for his father that vader eventually turned back.
