To be fair, Gear 2nd was partially ineffective. Luffy's increased speed allowed him to land multiple hits on Doflamingo without Law's help. The only problem was he was lacking sufficient power to seriously damage Doflamingo.

Doflamingo left law alive quite a few times intentionally. It's not that doflamingo couldn't, the issue is that he wouldn't. As for the rest, why would luffy being able to prevent doflamingo from landing a fatal blow on law imply luffy was able to keep up? All luffy had to do what get in the way, he didn't have to match doflamingo's strength for that.
Common, that's just false. Joker tried to crush Law and the only thing in his way was Luffy, that's why he used Conqueror's haki to intimidate him or weaken him, that Conqueror's haki release wasn't for show.

One stamp without Haki (or the invisible application), but Luffy stopped him.
Second stamp with Hardened Haki, clearly indicative of his increase in force to kill Law; he even asked why do you stop me?

It's clear that Joker didn't just let go of Law because; simply, the case is Luffy didn't let him, there's no other way to read that scenario.

@kkck I'm not sure where you are getting Doflamingo left Law alive intentionally quite a few times. I only remember one instance when he did that. He left him alive when their second fight ended right outside the stadium, but from that point onward he was out to kill Law when the latter confronted him at the palace with Luffy. Doflamingo actually thought he succeeded in killing Law while Luffy was dealing with Bellamy.

I didn't say luffy didn't land hits, I said his attacks were ineffective. Luffy landed the red hawk which the manga immediately pointed out didn't do much and even then it was only made possible because law helped luffy out. Then luffy kicked doflamingo's chin which didn't phase him much either. In turn in their initial confrontation it took doflamingo two seconds to slash and punch luffy without any help, just using his clone technique. From that point onward luffy only landed a kick but even that was only possible because doflamingo was going after law. There literally is a chapter dedicated to how ineffective both gears are. It's only gear 4 that gives luffy a fighting chance and even then it simply didn't last long enough to give luffy a chance.
Do you or anyone actually believe that gear 2nd did absolutely nothing to Doflamingo? IMO it actually did very minimal amount of damage. Say if Gear punch 4 did 100 then gear 2 punch would have done 1. When Doflamingo said it was ineffective to beat him does not mean that he will never be beaten; what he meant might be that gear 2 attacks are not enough to take him down under 1 hour. That is the time birdcage is going to contract completely.

@kkck I also agree with Hannibal Psyche and Based Shinigami. Doflamingo clearly states that he wanted to smash Law's head.

I still think that without Gear 4, Luffy could not win even if they fought for days, but as I said before, with Gear 2 Luffy was more or less around the same level as DD
The small skirmishes they had showed us they were quite equal to each other, with DD being a bit superior due to his DF giving him an edge since Luffy is weak to slashing/cutting attacks, and the fact that it allowed DD to fight close and long range if he wanted to

If DD was so superior to Luffy, the fight before Gear 4 would've ended up the same way his fight vs Law. DD was clearly superior to Law in every aspect, and he failed to even touch DD at all, which shows you the gap between them

i still dont see where the debate is, dolfamingo already outlasted gear 4th.
i havent seen any refutations.
-after fighting in the Colosseum, luffy even ate lunch before running off, and he dint do any fighting for a long while after, on the other hand, DD's injuries were right before gear fourth, it was even directly implied that doflamingo's injuries were more serious

have you ever seen someone with internal damage (like being impaled) start running marathons directly after coming out of the emergency room?, its indisputable that DD was still heavily injured, the claim that he didnt show any pain is also a poor argument, to give an example of this happening in OP, after fighting with morriah, luffy didnt look like he was suffering from any serious pain. i need not say more.

doflamingo was seriously handicapped going into the fight, and he still managed to survive.
the accusation that doflamingo is being cowardly because luffy was overpowering him is a poor argument, luffy's gomu gomu no mii allows him to FAR surpass his normally physical limits, making him a PURELY physical fighter, yet he still has to sacrifice, years of his life and chunks of his stamina to be able to do any significant damage. its almost unfair because no matter how hard luffy is getting his ass kicked, he can simply sacrifice a few more years of his life to get that extra punch in, doflamingo doesnt have that privellage, so fighting smart is his only resort, since his DF is more tactical that physically powerful( as is laws fruit ) . Not to say that his strings arent powerful, thats just a testament to how much DD has transcended past the normal limtis of DF use, i still dare to say that doflamingo is FAR superior to luffy

Outlasted Gear 4th? More like he stalled.

1. Joker knew Luffy was wasting haki
Just like Law knew Luffy was wating haki simply after seeing Luffy after executing 4-5 attacks, he knew he was wasting haki. This is why Joker stalled and was literally using his strings as a deterrent.

2. Joker was stalling

Joker very well knew that after he realized he couldn't do much to damage Luffy, the best he could do was stall and he did so by creating walls/shields.
We see this attacks over and over again even after 20 minutes..

Can tell from his expressions that he's having a severely difficult time deterring Luffy in Gear 4th and look at his face once Luffy breaks through his shied of strings? He knows what's coming.
So, it really isn't a case of Joker outlasting Gear 4th, it's more like he was in survival mode and needed Luffy's haki to deplete before he could even begin to entertain the though of going on the offence. Joker was clearly on the defence as soon as Gear 4th came out the woodwork.

-after fighting in the Colosseum, luffy even ate lunch before running off, and he dint do any fighting for a long while after, on the other hand, DD's injuries were right before gear fourth, it was even directly implied that doflamingo's injuries were more serious
They were both pretty much fine, no one was really more damaged than the other. Joker's clone was the one doing all the work while he remained unharmed. Joker didn't come into harm's way until Luffy and Law appeared at the palace. Don't forget the head tht Kyros decapitated was merely his clone. So, it's not like Joker went into the fight handicapped. Oda did a fair job making sure both were equally hurt, but it was nothing significant that makes one person clearly more injured than the other.

have you ever seen someone with internal damage (like being impaled) start running marathons directly after coming out of the emergency room?, its indisputable that DD was still heavily injured, the claim that he didnt show any pain is also a poor argument, to give an example of this happening in OP, after fighting with morriah, luffy didnt look like he was suffering from any serious pain. i need not say more.
This is taking Joker's injuries far beyond what Joker's injuries were, it wasn't that dire or Joker would have been coughing out blood at every instance and with every move he made.

When an injury sustained, we see the results and evidence that it's indeed a handicap:
Whitebeard was injured and fought like he had no stabs, in the end we saw him suffering from being injured which was mentioned and clearly highlighted to be the reason why he lost.

At what point do we see Joker referring to that attack as holding him back? No where, what people are going off on, is merely the description of the attack, the thing is the attack wasn't completely executed because Joker negated it.

He even got attacked by Counter Shock in the same spot where Gamme knife was used, and he got up effortlessly; if there was a time to show that Gamma Knife was really that huge a blow, it should have been aftre Law used Counter Shock because that'd imply that Gamma Knife was truly an effective attack.
In fact, if Gamma Knife was so effective, Counter Shock was pretty much a pointless attack; however, the fact that it was a futile attack in the end does show how short-lasting anything Gamma Knife did was.

Joker was defeated within 30 minutes which was the set-time people were going to begin to start dying off as he stated.
If he was barely holding on to his internal organs as being made out, then Joker should be dead already. His organs should have been out of place by the time he was knocked out and he should have been haemorrhaging profusely at that point, but was he? He wasn't and that essentially means that Gamma Knife was a short-lived and temporary injury. It didn't last for long enough a period to do much to hinder Joker.

the accusation that doflamingo is being cowardly because luffy was overpowering him is a poor argument, luffy's gomu gomu no mii allows him to FAR surpass his normally physical limits, making him a PURELY physical fighter, yet he still has to sacrifice, years of his life and chunks of his stamina to be able to do any significant damage. its almost unfair because no matter how hard luffy is getting his ass kicked, he can simply sacrifice a few more years of his life to get that extra punch in, doflamingo doesnt have that privellage, so fighting smart is his only resort, since his DF is more tactical that physically powerful( as is laws fruit ) . This takes the cake, now a fruit that can literally leech one's lifespan is an advantage.

Joker's ability allows him to turn inanimate objects into stings without any adverse effects like a drain in stamina or shortening of life-span? Joker could inedifinitely control strings with relying on his stamina and fight people off; that's quite the "disadvantage".

Joker can create a cage that doesn't weaken even if he's damaged or tired, it's up as long as his conscious; how is that not overpowered?

He literally doesn't even need to move to fight, he can create clones and control people with strings that can be seen, yet he's the one disadvantaged in comparison to Luffy who loses his life by pushing himself to his limit?

If anyone has the advantage in abilities, it's certainly not Luffy in this scenario.

He doesn't have to waste haki due to the convenience of an ability that doesn't drain stamina and is extremely powerful.

If we're going to start using fruits as an excuse for why 1 person is stronger than the other or more advantaged than the other, then it has to be done consistently. We should just deem everyone with a fruit weak just for having a fruit.

Sengoku must be weak for having the Buddha DF, Akainu must be weak, Kizaru must be weak, Jack must be weak; the only strong people must be those without one.

The whole purpose behind haki is to counter-act Devil fruit powers. Regardless of one's ability, the strong will be determined by the strength of their haki, or the likes of Rayleigh, Garp and many others would be insignificant.

A fruit is only made powerful by the user, or we can just assume that Usopp would be the world's strongest man purely by eating the Gura Gura no Mi.

That doesn't make any sense. How can you say that DD was seriously injured when he essentially does exactly the thing that you say is impossible?

About Luffy fighting Moria: it was shown during the fight that Luffy was clearly tired and running out of stamina. After the fight he was unconscious so it's no surprise he didn't show any pain or fatigue. And when he woke up Kuma had repelled all that pain and fatigue away from his body.

It seems I needed to be clearer on the whole doflamingo not killing law thing. Doflamingo had plenty of chances where he could have killed law without interference and he didn't take them. The first would be when doflamingo defeated law at the city. Doflamingo shot law but he didn't take the final step to actually killing him. If anything he took law and chained him to a chair later on. He could have killed him anytime basically. Then law broke free and they kept fighting for a while. Then after a bunch of crap doflamingo was about to deliver the actual finishing blow and luffy protected doflamingo once or twice IIRC. I think the point being made is that luffy would be more or less equal to doflamingo because he could protect law though that is not a notion I would agree with.

---------- Post added at 10:00 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 AM ----------

To add to that, the point is being made here that because doflamingo didn't show signs of exhaustion and whatnot it means that what law did was not too significant. However in context doflamingo never did anything of the sort at all. Take doflamingo right after luffy was done with his first run of gear 4. Doflamingo stood up like if nothing happened and went on to literally brush away his country's army. And even then, we know for a fact that doflamingo at that point was literally on his last breath. I mean, he literally needed one more punch to be defeated, as luffy did. And even being on his last breath didn't stop doflamingo from using attacks on the same scale as before. Just look at the attacks he used against luffy in their last confrontation. So the logic that because doflamingo didn't show signs of exhaustion he wasn't seriously affected by law's simply doesn't apply. Doflamingo took insane damage from law's attacks, he was certainly dealing with every implication of having his organs stitched up until the end of the fight because, well, holy shit his organs were slashed and stitched up.

Enel anyone? Dude fucking died, restarted his own heart and continued fighting in tip top shape like his soul hadn't just left him for a second. Doflamingo stitching himself up is basically the equivalent. It's magic, not threads and needles.

At that time DD wanted Law alive for the ultimate surgery. Then Law made a deal with DD but DD got pissed and killed Law (in fact he did not) and at that moment Luffy was not present. It is from that point onwards that DD actually wanted Law dead so the previous encounters like the fight in the city and strapped to the chair does not count because he did not want to kill law since he wanted the Perennial Youth Operation.

Then Law did Gamma Knife and counter shock. DD's pissed off meter sky-rocketed and wanted to kill Law. So the previous encounter has nothing to do with this because DD was not this pissed. He tried to crush Law's head but Luffy casually blocked itOn the first attempt he did not see Luffy but on the next attempt he used Haki on his foot to get past Luffy's foot forcefully and crush Law's head. That also failed so he used Conquerer's Haki to intimidate Luffy but that also failed. Luffy then overpowered DD and moved his foot away and attacked.

My point: DD could not overpower Luffy so it shows that Luffy was not below DD (not the height :teehee).

Text in Bold: But he was unable to do so and that proves that Luffy was about equal in power
Text in Red: Law instead of Doflamingo right?

Whitebeard. His organs were cooked but he still beat Akainu.
How would luffy blocking an attack that was not meant for him prove he was evenly matched with doflamingo? Under that logic law should have been a match to doflamingo because he casually blocked doflamingo's overheat. However we have seen the extent to which doflamingo was more powerful than law. Luffy never had a long confrontation with doflamingo before he used gear 4. The most he did was avoid a few of doflamingo's attacks but that is hardly evidence that luffy was able to keep up on his own considering how short most confrontations were. In turn we know doflamingo's attacks worked on luffy while luffy's didn't work on doflamingo. Luffy without gear 4 did only about as well as law did. And the end result would have been the same. The longest confrontation luffy had with doflamingo before gear 4 was the one immediately before he used it. And the chapter consistently showed doflamingo as overwhelmingly superior. Of course, doflamingo did not win instantly but the situation is that fights in the manga simply don't play out that way anymore. Take sabo vs burgues. By all accounts sabo is about a match to an admiral and is as far as we know immensely more powerful than burgues. And even then he did not win instantly.

This is quite interesting topic even though it's something that we can't really get any proof either way unless Oda says something. One thing that jumps to me is that people who thinks that Gamma knife hurt DD really bad downplays the effects of everything that Luffy had to go through.

Not really changing things much, but thought it's worth mentioning that you're kinda contradicting yourself with the sentences that I highlighted. If you think that Red Hawk didn't hurt DD at all, how can you think Gamma knife hurt him that much when he was standing and fighting like nothing happened after that attack too?
Dude for sure Gamma Knife is way more dangerous and did far more damage than Red Hawk and thats why I'm talking about, there aren't any contradiction in this statement.

What I mean is Luffy land a Red Hawk and DD could stand and fight without doing any first aid on the other hand Gamma Knife damaged DD really bad and he needed to lie and wait a little to heal himself before stand and fight again and still he wasn't the same anymore.

Luffy without gear 4 did only about as well as law did
I totally do not agree with this statement at all, Luffy was holding his own vs DD and did much more better than Law without Gear 4
Law could barely touch DD, Luffy exchanged hits with him big difference

Concerning the Gamma Knife, I don't know about you guys, but normally that attack should've killed him literally but since this is a Shonen and what not, he survived
If it did that much of a damage as you guys are saying, he wouldn't be able to fight and keep the same level of speed and power would he ?

Doflamingo stood up like if nothing happened and went on to literally brush away his country's army
No he didn't, he was wobbling and barely able to stand up, hence his use of awakening instead of moving and going for the kill himself, his mobility literally decreased after the first round of Gear 4 and simply relied on the awakening

We don't know if the awakening saps stamina or not, such an implication has never been made at all unlike Gear 4 for example

Well tbf, did WB seem different after getting a hole punched in him and half his face blown up? There was no immediately apparent change but there was definitely some effect. One can even argue that he might not have died from BB pirates onslaught if he hadn't sustained such injuries earlier. The same can apply to DD as well. He was in horrible condition when he got hit by gamma knife. He specifically states that he hasn't been healed. The pain and effect gotten from such an injury didn't simply disappear just because he temporarily stitched himself. That was something done as first aid to enable him keep fighting. The effect of gamma knife can't be underestimated imo. It was a lethal blow, DD alleviated the damage by stitching himself but he proceeded to continue fighting right after that. He didn't even get a moment to catch his breath or allow his body to heal a bit. He was certainly affected. Still I won't argue that Luffy in his prior gears did a lot better than law and held his own against DD. It ultimately wouldn't have sufficed though.

Honestly, you're not even looking at this with any objectivity at all, you've made up your mind before looking at the evidence.

Joker shot Law thinking that he was dead, maybe you should watch the anime to get a lucid idea of what occured after Joker dismembered Law's limb.

While Joker was shooting at "Law", Law had switched place with a dead Dressrosa soldier.

Joker thinks Law is dead after shooting him.
If you look carefully, when Law switches place with the Soldier:

  1. Law has the clothes of the soldier on and even apologises to the Corpse for letting it get shot in his place.
  2. While the soldier is in Law's clothes.

Scene showing Law had switched place with Corpse/Dead Soldier; it's only after Luffy arrives back on the scene he switches place back to attack Joker.

So, prior to Luffy's re-emergence, Joker thought Law was dead. It really takes one to be in a state of denial to not acknowledge the fact that Joker wasn't being negligent, but was trying to kill Law in earnest.

This is Joker going after Law after Luffy threw Law to safety, and what's Joker trying to do yet again after failing to crush his head? He's trying to go after Law. And who stopped him again? Luffy, all alone.

It really is a completely biased outlook on your part downplaying the fact that Joker tried to kill Law and the fact that if Luffy weren't as strong as Joker, he shouldn't have been capable of that.

To be honest I am not even entirely sure of what the point with law is. My point is simple, the manga shows that joker was by all intents and purposes overwhelmingly more powerful than luffy and at large luffy managed to win because of the overwhelming amount of help he got. Law at large got easily defeated as well and it was with help that he managed to land his own attacks for the most part. Also worth noting, when I referred to the law getting shot part I was also talking about the time doflamingo shot him with the white lead bullets earlier.

Of course, in that moment joker wasn't being negligent but he had ample chances to kill law before that. He could have killed him when he first fought him, he could have done that rather than chain him to a chair. Luffy stopping doflamingo's attack is not evidence, let alone proof, that luffy showed he was on the same level as doflamingo. As far as I can tell luffy confronted doflamingo on his own twice before using gear 4 and both times it was luffy who was getting pushed back with doflamingo taking no damage.

I don't think anyone disagrees with the notion that Doflamingo is superior to base Luffy. That being said, Luffy performed better than Law overall before he used Gear Fourth. Unlike Law he didn't allow his limbs to be cut off and become utterly helpless. Doflamingo was never able to overwhelm Luffy with his attacks. However, Luffy had access to a greater power Doflamingo could not hope to match.

My point is simple, the manga shows that joker was by all intents and purposes overwhelmingly more powerful than luffy.
How does the Manga show this, where exactly?

Through all of it. As far as I can tell before using gear 4 there are 2 instances of luffy fighting doflamingo alone which are in the links I showed before. The following chapters to be precise:
http://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/745
http://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/783

In the first one you see luffy saving kyros. And then luffy fights doflamingo alone, well past the point where the caught of guard card could be use. And what happens? Luffy is pretty much instantly overwhelmed. It's pretty much what happened to law when he fought doflamingo except it did not go on for as long thanks to pica.

The second link is the chapter which specifically made a point to show that gear 2 and 3 were utterly useless against doflamingo. As in gear 2 not being strong enough to deal actual damage and gear 3 not being fast enough to hit. That alone should be enough to show that luffy without gear 4 was never even vaguely a match to doflamingo. Nothing luffy can throw to doflamingo that is not gear 4 related will ever cause significant, or maybe any, damage to doflamingo. Even gear 3 likely falls short if it connects considering gear 4 was significantly more powerful than it. Now, luffy did a good job dodging doflamingo's attacks. But that is not nearly good enough, that does not suggest luffy could keep up with doflamingo without gear 4 at all. Simply because luffy could not keep it up. In the two instances where luffy confronted doflamingo alone luffy failed to deal any damage and had his ass handed to him. Gear 4 is the only thing that gave him a temporary advantage. And even then it simply does not last enough to beat doflamingo.
