Though in all fairness Wajimania has given the genre a bad name at the moment, with it's author titled egotistical blandness

Another name for gag manga would be comedy manga, the reason they call them gag instead of comedy is probably because the comedy is derived from multiple gags throughout the story telling.

Noodles, if you love gag manga so much, why don't you scanlate Inumaru Dashi...

Also gag manga often gets a bad rap because usually the drawing skill isn't good. If it's descent like stuff in Bobobo and Inumaru I don't mind. Even Jaguar.

Wajimania, not so much.

nothing against gag mangas!
i'm not saying it will be bad automatically. its just that gag manga isn't my taste like how i refrain from reading shoujo mangas.
so i was disappointed because i won't be reading any of the new series.

hmmm. i categorize gag and comedy as too different things.
for me, gag mangas are mangas that doesn't have much of an on-going plot and usually have episodic stories that focus only on one or two chapters with little connection to others. (example: kochikame, inumaru dashi, etc)
comedy mangas are mangas on the other hand that does have on-going plots and development. (example: Beelzebub, Medaka Box, Onidere, etc)
but i guess its a bit biased.

If there is a just and merciful god there will never be a Black Cat 2.

That's not quite true, though. Gag is a very specific type of comedy, and one that doesn't appeal to everyone (hence why gag manga are sometimes unpopular).

It's true that gag manga can be described as comedy manga, but it's a more specific type, with less focus on character and centered around cheap gags.

i havent read a gag manga before [atleast i think i didnt], altho this is off topic,
can ya guys recomend me one ??,

i think shounen jump has a gag manga, starts with like an i, i think
i might be interested in giving that manga a chance,
but again id like to read a gag manga first

Since there is no definition, or difference between, gag and comedy manga, I've always used the two names to differentiate between the 8 or 9 page (gag) and 20 page series (comedy). Something like Jaguar or Mangaka - san to Assistant - san to would fall into the first, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or St. Young Men in the second. Not that there is a dictionary definition, just a nice little short hand to differentiate between two ways of doing the same thing. Don't forget, 4Koma is just as important a style of gag/comedy.

With that out of the way, let's make this place a nice little thread to discuss comedy/gag/4Koma manga. Discussion about specific series is fine, discussion about the genre is fine too. No lists. There's already a list thread, lists will be deleted. Any reference to funny moments from series that are obviously not comedies will be deleted.

Can Gintama be considered gag? I has short stories plus it has almost no plot and is prety fun (the funiest manga of the history of the universe lol :P).

Gintama certainly is a comedy series, though I'm not sure why comedy has to be defined in the negative (no plot). Gintama has a fairly in depth plot so far as I'm concerned.

I really love Gintama, to me it is the funniest manga. Another way of saying is the amount of the comedy it has is incredible.

Is 4koma considered a gag? because i never really like it, the only reason i happen to read maybe because it included on the chapter that i read. And despite how popular Kochikame is, i never really want to read it.

Is doraemon considered a gag manga?

I don't really like kochikame but I don't really dislike it for me kochikame is a bit childish. But I've only saw a few anime episodes so I can be wrong.

4 koma can count as gag, due to the short sharp jokes over and over and so on.

also kochikame is childish, for it is shonen and aimed at 10-13 year olds. but the animated movie that's got subs floating out there is definitely well suited to all ages.

As TLer of KochiKame (having just finished vol. 1 last week), I sort of find the series not too bad for a general audience so far. It just is sort of something of a completely different time that you have to get yourself used to in liking...
