I've been meaning to make a thread on here for a while but never quite got around to it/got up the courage to do it. Now that I have over 100 translations at MH and a number of fans, I figured I may as well do it already. So... hi everyone!

First, some basic info:
A lot of people seem to think I'm a guy, but I am actually female (shock!). I'm also old currently 27, with a BA in creative writing and studio art, and have been studying Japanese for over 10 years. I first started back in high school, thanks to a language program offered through a local college. These days, I mostly translate to improve my Japanese skills and keep from getting rusty. It's primarily a hobby, though I'm always looking around for the potential to get paid/do it professionally.

I'm also a huge stickler for correct grammar where English is concerned. Chatspeak and whatnot drive me NUTS unless used purposefully for comedic effect. I think it tends to carry over in my translations, hence why I'll often agonize over the wording for long periods of time. Oh, and I also hate hate HATE people whining about when releases are coming out or why translations aren't faster, etc. One of these days I will actually follow through on my threat to just google translate a chapter in retaliation. :T

Favorite manga include: Hiatus x Hiatus, Skyhigh, DOLL: IC in a Doll, Billy Bat, Haikyuu!!
Favorite books: The Book Thief (Markus Zusak), The Five People You Meet in Heaven (Mitch Albom)
Favorite movies: What Dreams May Come, Summer Wars, The Last Samurai, AI: Artificial Intelligence

Translation stuff:
People around here probably know me best for my Nurarihyon no Mago translations, since I picked up the series around chapter... 160 or so? I also currently translate Assassination Classroom on a weekly basis, Haikyuu!! and PSI Kusuo Saiki on a trying-to-catch-up-to a weekly basis, and various other series (Haru Polish and Shiinake no Hitobito, primarily) on a random basis.

While I'm not necessarily looking for more series to pick up, I'm generally open to checking out potential suggestions - though I offer no guarantees that I'll translate them. I've also chosen not to translate ongoing series that I don't already read, and I keep away from the more well-known Shounen Jump titles (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc.) because everyone and their grandmother translates those - not to mention they do it much faster than I'd be able to anyway.

Also, my translating speed has kinda... drastically decreased, thanks to RL circumstances. I try my best, but I'm a bit slow with releases these days.

Hey lynxian, glad to see you've finally made a thread and congratulations on your 100th translation.

I don't read much manga generally aside from the big three and occasional ganders here and there. Most times, I happen to read a manga by taking an anime interest. I've probably ran into some of your translations while reading Mago - although I don't follow it currently. I gave up learning Japanese as soon as I saw the kanji you'd have to learn. It did not take long to give up learning Japanse for me. So its always a plus to meet someone who has put some effort into learning it. Besides Japanese and English, can you speak or write any-other languages?

If you haven't already, visit the Translators' Academy I'm sure mikkih will love to converse with you. Other than that - be sure to visit the fun forum's last person to post win thread game. Its more of a hangout / spam area but you might find it nice. So don't pay attention to grammar in that place . Also, you should poke around the member zone and chat in the members threads when you have time.

All kidding aside, it's scary that we have the same interests, the same length of time studying Japanese (I think I hit 11 years in August 2013), and the same college degree. You're not...me are you? O_O Or am I you? O_o In any case I really enjoy your AC translations to the point of not reading raws until after the scantlation with your work is released. Your liner notes actually saved me on one chapter of Gintama where Koro sensei was mentioned, but since I don't read raws I didn't get the connotation. I remembered your note though and it all made sense. :-P So thanks for that.

I totally agree on the big three, which is why I often have to fend off people who ask me to translate them. Actually I don't like to translate from jump for that reason. (Proven right when I started on AC just to be beaten by you, lol.) Then again I happen to prefer Sunday (Both monthly and weekly.), so there's that too.

Take your time on the translations. The people who really appreciate you won't bug you about them. I've really learned who my real friends are when I say I can't get to a series or a chapter for a while.

Hey there,
Since, friendship scans are being too lazy for releasing or dropped Doraemon (I don't know).
so, i want to scanlate Doraemon now, they didn't even completed 7th vol. till now and this series is 45 vol.s long. so, there is much-much more work left. besides they only release 1 chapter(5-7 pages) in 2-3 months. SERIOUSLY !?!?!?.

So, I WANT A DORAEMON FAN who can translate 1-2 chapters (9-13 pages) a week and as you know Doraemon is the easiest manga to translate. so, i don't need any experience, even a newbie can translate Doraemon, and it will be a good practice for him also.

So. if any anybody wanna help the best master piece of FUJIKO F. Fujio to get fully scanlate for the other Doraemon fans out there in the world , please send me a email @ :-

It's a bit late (though the last couple of comments are strangely recent?!), but I'll try answering everyone anyway!

@Charlie: Whooboy, yeah. Kanji can be murder. Back in high school, the Japanese program had us learning a bunch of basic kanji every chapter (about 10, IIRC), which became progressively more complex the further we went. I have to admit, I probably know much fewer kanji than I should (oops), but since I started trying my hand at light novels and furigana-less series, I've been picking up more kanji pretty quickly. Let's see... aside from Japanese and English, I took 6 years of French and 1 of Latin in high school (so a fair amount of those have stuck with me) and 1 semester of Arabic in college (which... I remember very little of, unfortunately).
I poke around the Translators' Academy every now and then and try to lend a hand, but I'm kinda hilariously shy (or just bad at talking with people), so I've never quite gotten around to delving into the rest of the member forums. Someday!

I always used to think of you as this big deal in the translation scene because at one point, your name popped up in the credits for a lot of the series I was reading. That aside, I'm really flattered! AC sometimes gives me a hard time, so I'm always grateful for feedback on my translations.
Somehow, I always end up translating series that aren't quite as popular as others, but are still in major venues. Lol, why is it that the niche titles are always harder to translate than the likes of the big three? XD I completely agree on that last point, too. It still frustrates me horrendously when people whine about chapters taking so long and whatnot, but the ones who understand that we translators have lives and are actual people can really make the effort worth it.

@Jaimini: Lol, you're probably not likely to see this since it's so belated, but... as you'd probably expect, I'm hilariously swamped these days. On top of that, Date-senpai never quite caught my interest while it was still running, so I wouldn't be inclined to pick it up. Sorry.

@madman: Wow, Doraemon. If I weren't so swamped, I'd help out, but I have way too much on my plate as-is (and I keep stumbling across new series that tend to have no furigana but make me want to translate them anyway, to boot). Good luck, though!

@Neko8: You're welcome! And I wouldn't mind helping out in the translation-checking department (or proofreading), but I really wouldn't be able to flat-out pick up the series. I actually have a couple of people who periodically message me for help with sentences they're having trouble with (though I have no idea why, because I'm far from the best one to ask o_O), so you're more than welcome to do that too. XD;

@dingmajiao: Aww, you're very welcome! I had fun discussing stuff with everyone in the MF forums, too. This reminds me, I have to finish up that Nuramago bangaihen chapter about Rihan and the Shinsengumi... note to self.

Oh no problem. And the only thing big about me is how much I fail at translating, but like most Shounen series I just do not know how to give up. :-P One day I'll become the Bishokuya pirate hokage king. I just need to keep working harder towards my goals!

Heh. Yeah, sadly as long as there are human beings there will be some sort of stupidity. You can actually rely more on stupidity than you can on hope.

I'm pretty much always writing and or translating, so I echo the not getting out much. I can deal with people when necessary though, but in most situations I prefer not to. Thoooough I think that's probably enough of trading our antisocial-ness like Pokemon cards. Let me ask a semi-intellegent question since I am only semi-competent at translation (and have semi-intellegence as well). What do you look for in an anime or manga? What draws you to read certain things? On that note, what draws you to translate certain series? (Cause reading something and translating it take different sorts of interests I think.) Are there any series you wish you had hopped on that if you had a second chance you would now? Some you wish you could drop but stay on out of a sense of duty? XD No worries, I like answering questions like these. Let's see... the anime/manga I like generally fall into two categories: 1) stuff that leaves me on the edge of my seat going hooooly crap, and 2) weird humor things. There are a few exceptions, as well as a number of series that can fit into both categories. I tend to really like things with a heavy psychological focus - the sort that allow you to get inside characters' heads so you can see the same story from multiple angles. Anything that deals with moral ambiguity is likely to attract my attention, as well as things that give a different take on accepted norms (like religion). I like stuff about folktales, too. And then there are series I've tried out just because they focus on something I've done at one point IRL (like HQ!! and Soul Catchers).

As for what draws me to a series... sometimes it's a toss-up. There have been a lot of series that I wouldn't have picked up based on their summaries alone that I've ended up really enjoying. I remember when some friends in high school tried to get me into One Piece and I thought it was the most boring thing imaginable, only to catch an episode of the Arlong arc (the 4kids dub version, no less!) on TV some time later. Needless to say, the series has certainly gained a place in my heart. Someone in the WSJ LJ community got me to read Saiki by describing it as a cynical narrator surrounded by idiots, and someone else got me interested in Gamma (from Jump SQ) by mentioning that it was akin to Tiger & Bunny in how it depicted heroes trying to live their daily lives. Hell, I originally started reading Billy Bat because of a page from it featuring Einstein that was posted on an image thread.

Even though I like reading creepy things, I usually stay awaaaay from translating them. I tend to avoid fanservice-based stuff, too, and no way in hell will I ever agree to translate porn (people have actually asked, hahaha). Come to think of it, a lot of the things I translate are relatively light-hearted. If a series can make me laugh reading the raws, it's very likely I'll want to try translating it. Oh, and once I fall in love with a mangaka's work, I'll not only read just about everything they've done, but in some cases I'll want to translate their other works, too. And I'll proceed to hide the answer to the last couple of questions in this paragraph to be sneaky or something. Series I wish I'd hopped onto, hm... most of the series I work on are relatively obscure, so no one else is doing them anyway (lol). The only ones I can think of atm would be Nanatsu no Taizai and Jinrui wa Suitaishimashita. As for series I wish I could drop, well... coughassassinationclassroomcough. I'm currently in a "giving it 5 more chapters to impress me" phase, but I kinda feel like I'm stuck and can't drop it (which, quite frankly, I would really like to do. I know the series is bizarrely popular, but the only thing I consistently like about it is the clever wordplay). All my other titles I'm pretty happy with, though I wish I could devote more time to Saiki (if I DO drop AC, Saiki will move up the priority scale).

lol well I did ask a lot of thought provoking (?) questions, so I guess it's only fair you have a lot to respond to.

You translate Gamma? Or you just read it? I need to really check out Jump SQ. I read it like every other-other month and am generally very pleased with what I see in it. Oh and OP is definetly awesome. I actually got into it through a cousin of mine who downloaded a few of the ED themes. As a person who loves Japanese music, I fell for Ending #6 'Fish by The Kaleidoscope'. (It was the Chopper-centric ending song.) And went hunting for the series after that. I soon found some bootlegs of the anime and watched most of them before finally reading the manga. (That's actually how I got into Hunter X Hunter too! Even Gintama that I translate now is something I watched the anime for first before eventually settling on the manga.) Although nowadays I don't watch the OP anime anymore, I still read the raws each week.

As for me, I enjoy humorous manga moreso than psychological ones. I have a soft spot for slice of life comedies, though since I hate any sort of Romance (unless it's a part of the plot), I find very few slice of life that satisfy me. So often I'm reading action-adventure Shounen manga. As old as I am I know I should graduate to something for my age group but something about hot blooded Shounen manga gets me all giddy inside. Though I have been reading more Seinen lately (including Billy Bat. I got into that since kewl who edits my Gintama translations also translates that.)

I agree with you on the fanservice and horror manga though. I don't read them or translate them. (I've been asked to do it too, so you're not alone.) Since I'm more comfortable reading (and translating) shounen, I tend to have a lot of light hearted or bizarre (In the odd Shounen sense, and not so much the OMG what the hell is that sense), manga in my repertoire. I just checked on Batoto and it seems I'm the only person who's translated Nakayama Atsushi's works. XD I really like that guy's artwork, though it's a bit on the insane side. I don't tend to follow artists unless their works really leave an impression on me, or out of nostalgia. Fukuchi Tsubasa's 'Ueki' series was the first series that I ever tried (and failed miserably) to translate, so I feel like whatever he ends up doing (or not doing since it seems like he's on hiatus a lot of the time), I'll probably at least try to translate the first chapter or something.

Lol ironically I feel sort of the same way towards Gintama as you do AC. Though I guess it's more a love-hate thing for me than a general apathy? I do really enjoy Gintama, but I realize I could have twice the output translation wise if I were to drop it. I've taken hiatuses from the series and kewl has always jumped in and done a way better job, so sometimes I wonder if anyone cares that I keep doing it? Though at the same time I feel like the series is a part of who I am as a translator at this point, and I'm too stubborn to drop it despite Sorachi making me want to hurt him. I dunno, I feel like it depends on how long Gintama continues at this point. I guess eventually the amount of text will probably make me give up on it sometime, but I've noticed now that I've been translating Nejimaki Kagyuu (a seinen by Nakayama Atsushi), that getting through Gintama has been a little easier. Still, there are soooo many things I could do if I didn't have to dedicate a whole evening to do Gintama alone. (Seriously, it can take up to four hours a chapter.) Like maybe...AC? lol. I was planning on translating it before you beat me to it after all....(O 3 O).

Yup, I'm in the process of translating Gamma, though it unfortunately keeps getting shoved aside by weeklies and/or more pressing things... Funny thing about the One Piece anime: because my first exposure to it was the dub, the original Japanese voices for some of the characters (Sanji in particular) sound REALLY weird to me. Oh, and if we're talking weird ways of getting into series, I first started reading Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Reborn! and Hiatus x Hiatus as a result of the Jump Super Stars/Ultimate Stars games. Jotaro and Killua make awesome mains because they have a nice attack range.

I've seen a few romance-ish series that are far too funny for their own good. The main one that comes to mind right now is Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara, which manages to crack me up several times a chapter without fail. If you haven't read it, it's hilariously ridiculous. And oooh Billy Bat. Urasawa is one of the few mangaka I positively adore. Pluto is one of my absolute favorite titles and I remember being on the edge of my seat watching MONSTER's anime (someday I'm going to finish watching that...). Oh! I checked out the first chapter of Nejimaki Kagyu. It's weird, but in a good way. If the rest of Nakayama's series are like that, I can see why you'd like them. XD

You read Nejimaki? Sweet. I honestly didn't like the series when I first purchased it, but after translating the first 40 chapters it became an addiction. Nakayama does a good job of mixing romance and healthy amounts of WTF in that series. I'm looking forward to working on more so look forward to reading more. Nakayama is just a weird guy with an insane art style. I really need to finish the other series I started of his...Traumeister, since that was the first work of his I ever translated. It's only five volumes long so I feel sorta like it wouldn't take much to finish...

As for AC, I have no time to usurp it from you unfortunately. I'm in the last year of a grad degree and finding myself increasingly busy. It's why lately I haven't TL'ed anything other than Gintama. (It's weird how that's the hardest series I do but I always seem to keep up with it.) I hope once things quiet down a bit I can do things like finish Bullet Armors and get more Nejimaki out there.

Oh I read a bit of Gamma's first chapter raw and found it intruging. I can't wait to see your translation whenever you're done with it.

And as for Jump superstars, my copy got stolen so unfortunately I can't play it. U_U I had an awesome deck with Luffy, Kagura and Linalee though. I loved that deck so much. The HXH characters are interesting to use, though I think the most fun characters in that game had to be Neuro and Tsuna. Once I got a hang of Tsuna he was awesome to mess people up with. XD

I started watching Monster myself, though my external HD containing the series crashed so now I no longer have it. (Boy, a lot of bad things seem to happen to me huh?) I guess I'll continue it eventually....

But yeah, chatting is good. Better than fighting or....whatever else people do on the internet.
