I mean not to be a downer or anything, but it's a Predator movie... how "good" can it really be :/?

Shane Black has done some pretty good things, but it's still a Predator movie with a pretty generic,horror-like cast. I don't see it going any different than all the other movies, BUT then again I won't be watching this since it's not my thing, so be sure to let us know how it was when you get to see it.
How dare you... the original Predator is one of the greatest action movies of all time. And Predator 2 is underrated, IMO

If it's not your thing though it's not your thing. I can respect that.

And it's pretty much a fact that all Predator movies after 2 haven't exactly been amazing. AVP was decent, even if it was more of an Alien move than it was a Predator movie. Predators was bad but the concept was decent and Andean Brody was surprising good as a badass soldier. The rest was trash.

What I'm saying though is that I can talk myself into thinking this will be good. So that's exactly what I'll do. And as you can see I'm well on my way to doing it.:p

I recently seen the movie Inside Llewyn Davis. I couldn't connect with the film, and I did try. Llewyn meets failure in everything for this whole movie, but I never really got to a point where I cared enough for him. Maybe that's the point, to detach me from that type of ending, so I can wallow in the theme of 'artist vs industry'; or perhaps something else I completely missed. It was oddly funny, though. And Oscar Isaac deserves all the praise he got how many years ago this movie was made. My first impression is that this is my least favourite Coen's film.

Favorite 2018 movie seen in theaters/released this year, or in general?
Released this year, excluding film festivals. Will vary depending on where we live obviously. Something 'new'.

Idk if I've seen anything this year which comes close to being a favourite movie. I can agree with a lot of points Jammin made about Annihalation for example. Last year was kind of the same. A Ghost Story was probably my favourite, yet there were parts in it I didn't like. Three Billboards was amazing when I saw it, but outside of the performances and feeling in the film it didn't stay with me for long. Re-watched Mother! and found it funnier and less impactful the second time (somewhat typical of Aronofsky outside of The Wrestler and The Fountain). Lady Bird might be the one I re-visit and get more from it, maybe.

I did search for Hard to Be a God, but nothing local had it. So will have to buy online, which I intend to going on the premise and what you said regarding it.

But if anyone wants to list the best movies they've seen this year I'd be glad to see them. If I had to pick 3 that I've seen this year, for the first time, it'd be:
Brief Encounter, Holy Motors. and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. As for re-watches - Blade Runner, Once Upon a Time in the West, and Badlands.

One thing I find myself saying a lot lately is "yeah, I liked it, but I wish I could've seen more of it/the characters", and I thought the same about You Were Never Really Here.
In which way? Like, would the movie be better served as a TV serial? Or is this a short-coming in cinema for you??

If you want I can try and see if it's still available where I got it from (didn't pay for it, wink wink, but I definitely want to own this film). It's around 4Gb I think, I I'll PM you the details if you want.

Hmm like I said, sometimes when I'm finished I just think "that felt a bit short, I wish it was a longer flick, if only slightly".

In the case of You Were Never Really Here, I wanted to see from Joaquin's character since he's such a good actor AND the character was very intriguing.

Usually I find myself thinking that way either because I want to see more of someone, and/or because the immersion was really good and I wanted to see more of that universe or whatever, if that makes any sense.

I haven't seen many series lately, but yeah, with a tv show you get hours and hours to develop characters and worldbuilding, it's different and naturally you can't expect the same out of movies, I know that.

Hard To Be a God is one such example for me. While you'll find people saying that it was their worst, most vile, useless time-wasting experience, I could've easily watched another 3 hours of that movie like it was nothing.

Finally got around to seeing Mission Impossible: Fallout

It lived up to the hype, 9 out of 10 for me.

I'm not really a Tom Cruise fan or a fan of the mission impossible franchise but this movie sold me on both to some degree. It was good enough that I feel like I actually want more now. Also really fun and physical performance by Henry Cavil. It's such a different character than I'm used to seeing him play but he did an amazing job with it. He stood out even in a cast filled with a surprising number of memorable side characters. I'm totally sold on him playing James Bond now too.

The writing was solid too. There were some moments there that actually surprised me. Just a good movie all around.

I've been checking things off my "movies I meant to see but didn't" list.

Murder on the Orient Express. 7/10

Thought Kenneth Branagh was fantastic. I'm on board for more Hercule Poirot movie remakes as long as he's playing the part and directing. Entertaining performances from almost all the cast too really. The actual mystery though was kind of.. meh. The conclusion was also kind of unsatisfying. So, while I found it highly entertaining, I don't think I'll ever want to watch it again.

Edge of Tomorrow. 9/10

Somebody here, sorry can't remember who, brought it up as a good Tom Cruise movie earlier, I think. Whoever that person was... you were absolutely right! It's a great movie. Aside from maybe being a little slow in the first act it was a pretty outstanding Sci-Fi action movie and a rare great use of time travel.
--- Double Post Merged, ---
Final Predator trailer is out.

Now before I say what I'm about to say I want to preface it with coping to the fact that I want to convince myself this movie is going be good(ish) regardless of how little there is pointing to the idea that is the case.

Having said that, this trailer makes it look better than the previous two right? Terrible rap music aside it made it look like a highly entertaining movie to me. Am I delusional?

I really hope, "The Predator" is good, I love the 1987 original and the 2010 sequel. This one looks so, so to me. I will say it could be better than "Alien: Covenant".

p.s., "Edge of Tomorrow" is technically the best movie adaptation of a manga series and gets very little credit for that. Hoping for the sequel to get made. :super

That was a manga? I just asumed it was an action remake of Groundhog Day.:amuse

I checked two more movies off my "Moves I mean to see but didn't list". I knew there where going to be bad though, and they didn't disappoint. Or maybe they did. Either way they were bad.

Rampage 3/10
Pacific Rim 2 2/10

Two really terrible movies that were bad in a similar way. They both have a can't miss premise with big mosters fighting and what should be cool action but both completely screw it up by focusing on all the things they shouldn't. Which in Rampage was Dwayne Johnson's friendship with the big gorilla. And with Pacific Rim 2 was an annoying kid. Monster movies should be about Monsters! How does a screenwriter not know that? You don't need artificial barriers to success, often in the form of emotional dumbassery, because you already have something to overcome. GIANT ASS MONSTERS!

Anyway, if anyone is foolish enough to consider checking those out....don't. They are terrible.

Also randomly watched Gone Girl 5/10

Now I know some people who love this for some reason so I'll have to acknowledge that maybe this just wasn't for me but I found it to be a well acted and directed waste of time. The plot was kind a pointless and uninteresting. It was successfully dramatic but in the dullest way possible. The plot was supposed to be thought provoking, I guess but it just didn't land for me. I felt like it was a bad mystery movie more than a good drama but the cast and directing could only elevate it to about break even.

I think I vaguely remember us talking about this. Was I arguing with you over Tom Cruise movies? I mean, I'm not a big fan of his necessarily, but that movie was really tight and well made.

Actually, it technically isn't. All You Need is Kill was a light novel before it was a manga. The Manga and the Film adaptations both came out around the same time.

Didn't watch a single movie in August :(... but so far I've already seen 11 this month, so that's good I guess. Here are my thoughts:

- Four Hands: I was expecting a more violent, traditional revenge flick than what I got. It was well shot and all the violence was really realistic, but even though I couldn't quite predict the twist accurately, I still feel like it wasn't that original. It was okay overall, not bad in the least but just "okay".

- Wij: a story about 8 friends and how things sometimes spiral out of control... I think it's based on some true events? Either way, I found the movie to be way too gratuitous at times "just for the sake of it". There were some interesting aspects, but overall I would've been just fine if I hadn't seen it. I didn't feel like "great, X hours of my time I'll never get back", but I wasn't that far off.

- Cutterhead: a woman goes underground to interview some workers that are currently drilling through the earth to construct a new subway (I think that's what that was?) but something goes wrong and they become stuck there without help and a very limited supply of oxygen. This was the first film by the director and I really liked how it was shot. It felt very real and authentic, though I was expecting more of a "characters are stuck and desperately try to escape throughout the whole film" in a frenetic, fast-paced kinda way, but like I said in a way it felt very realistic with humane reactions and whatnot.

- Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse: I simply didn't like it. I like horror films, and I also like weird, unconventional things... But when it's simply way too random with very little to go on, it just doesn't do anything for me. MAYBE there's a lot of stuff that I still need to read about for the film to make (more) sense. Visually and musically it was alright, but there didn't seem to be much of a story. I was extremely on the fence as to whether it was worth seeing it or not, and I should've gone with my initial gut instinct and said "screw it"... oh well, at the very least it's another movie I can check off my list.

- Inuyashiki: having read the manga and seen parts of the anime, I found the live-action film to be pretty good actually. Granted, the 2h film follows a different path than that of the manga (it goes down a more traditional good vs. evil route while still leaving some little room for all the other stuff) but it was still enjoyable. Sadly, a lot of awesome/violent scenes had to be cut/turned into something else, like the bad guy raiding a police station and killing hundreds as well as a bunch of planes dropping out of the sky, but it's no wonder that such things were cut from a japanese film... it would've been simply too much. But yeah, I had a good time, and the ending is definitely more hopeful than the one from the source material, in my opinion.

- Upgrade: I was slightly disappointed because what you see in the trailer is literally all you get, but it was a cool ride. Bonus points for going with a bold ending and not the typical, cliché ones. I wish there had been a little more to the story and more fight sequences, but it was awesome nonetheless and I'm glad I saw it.

- Luz: now this was a very peculiar film. It's only 70mins long, shot on 16mm film, was made as part of a university film project and had about only 120k budget. "Hypno-horror" would be the best way of defining the sub-genre, I guess. I really liked the concept, the way the story was told and how they kept everything minimalistic (due to the low budget, certainly) but also extremely interesting at the same time. The mise-en-scène was extremely clever, and there's also like only a handful of different locations. I always say I'm a sucker for long films and I'm always wary of those that are under 90mins, and especially those that are under 80mins, but I'm glad to say Luz was an exception. Luz works because it's "weird" in its own way, yet the story itself is quite simple.

- Knife+Heart: I only went to see this movie because a friend wanted to see it, otherwise I would've skipped it. I had read a lot of bad things about it, and the trailer made it seem like both the dialogues and acting were simply horrendous, but I was actually quite surprised in the end. It's still (probably) a film I wouldn't have watched any other time, and it's by no means a masterpiece, but it wasn't terrible. The visuals were nice, as well as the OST, and the whole thing in general was alright. I wouldn't have regretted NOT seeing it, but I was glad to find out gradually how it simply wasn't as bad as I was lead to believe.

And finally, the film I'd been waiting to see since it was announced who knows how long ago... The film I was so extremely hyped for that I didn't even watch the trailer - or any footage at all - because I wanted to go in as blind as possible... possibly the most anticipated film of the year for me...

Mandy was just incredible, it was everything I hoped it would be and it even went beyond that. It's definitely NOT for everyone, but it was simply amazing to me. The director previously made Beyond The Black Rainbow, but Mandy is definitely more approachable for the bigger masses and not just because Nicolas Cage is in it.

The story is actually quite simple, but the way it's told, shot and experienced is breathtaking and out of this world.

And the OST was so good I just had to own it, so I pre-ordered this :D

It also was the composer's, Jóhann Jóhannsson, last soundtrack because he unexpectedly and sadly died back in February, and I don't know if knowing this made the film feel sadder and heavier at times for me, but I did feel melancholic and could've easily cried during the final shots/sequences. There just was some undescribable sadness/tragedy to the whole thing, so yeah, I kinda had to own it.

I am definitely watching this in theaters at the very least 1 more time, possibly 2. It sucks that tickets are so expensive but holy shit, this movie has to be seen in a big screen.

As the trailer accurately points out, it's "insanely violent and ethereally beautiful". If you're at all interested in seeing it, I suggest not watching the trailer/not reading anything further about it... but if you're curious, here's the fecking awesome trailer:

I will be watching Mandy that looks interesting. As much as Nic Cage gets meme'd he has the capacity to put out great performance like someone commented in the preview. See Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

Also randomly watched Gone Girl 5/10

Imo the last parts to this were pretty awesome in this movie. Like the 'suburban happy married life' theme that was very on the nose ended in a pretty unsettling place, where they lived happily ever after after all that happened. I felt like I had been strung around quite well by Fincher with that. I didn't like the rest of the movie so much, but if it's to build an ending like that I can deal.

Overall didn't like it as much as some of other of Fincher's stuff, still a good movie.

Fair enough. I just wasn't pulled in by the journey or the destination, I guess. When I walk away from a movie I want to come away with "something". Some kind of mental or emotional reaction. And walking away from that I felt like I didn't.

Oh I forgot, I also had the chance of seeing the first ever showing of a Japanese film called "Shinmashi" (does anyone know what that means btw?) which has been poorly(?) translated to Exorcism of Mary Lamb.

It was definitely not for everyone and a lot of people left during the film, but I liked it. To me it really felt like it could be a modern "Cure" (1997), which I've already talked about I believe. I mean I had different expectations based on the synopsis so in a way I was kinda cheated, but still.

Really liked the way it was shot and the main actor as well. It was strangely paced and not exactly "rewarding", but it was nice knowing I was one of the first persons to see it ever.

I believe it releases in Japan on October 27th, according to the official website.

Managed to see The Predator. Solid 7.5 out of 10. Thank god.

Way better than the trailer made it look. While I wouldn't say it's as good as the original but it's probably on par with the second one. I would describe it as "surprisingly hilarious". It's not quite an action/comedy but at times it bordered on it. With more than a few intentionally hilarious death scenes and lots of great banter and bravado. And Boyd Holbrook did the action hero thing really well too. To the point where he wouldn't have felt out of place in Arnie's squad in the first movie. The only real downside was Sterling K. Brown's corny as shit performance as "evil government dude" (really don't know why they put him in the trailer). Aside from that it was a good time through and through.

Bleach 9 / 10 :hi

I got an unexpected chance to see the new live action "Bleach" film that was first mentioned two years ago, upon the conclusion of the widely popular manga series in Japan and here in the states as well. The new film covers the beginning story arc that introduces Ichigo, his abilities to see ghosts and his encounter with soul reaper, Rukia of Soul Society. Other characters are introduced to add to the plot as a whole and Ichigo's character was very well adapted.

I did get a chance to see last year's "Fullmetal Alchemist" and I think the mistake they didn't make with this film was cramming so much story into a two hour plot. Here, they not only took elements from the manga but the anime too and both felt meshed together well. The music is interesting too and I think, Bleach fans like myself will get a kick out of it. I've already read complaints about minor details, but I must say, a well done job and hopefully we will get sequels in the near future. I really want to see, Kenpachi in action and many other famous Bleach characters. :super

Just saw Mandy at Cinefest... it was Absolutely Terrible... and I must have more of it! It is done in the style of horror films from the '80s, so I'm sure you know where I'm coming from here... at many key points in the film, instead of being horrified... we are laughing our asses off in the theater.
Enjoy! :XD

Definitely a must-see for me. :nod Nic Cage going full Nic Cage is always worth it, even (or especially?) when the film is terrible. Always brings that so-bad-it’s-good element to it.

I should have mentioned that in my Cinefest booklet, Nicolas Cage gets credited twice in this movie... Once as Nicholas Cage and once as Nicholas Uncaged. Just an amusing point. :XD

So you didn't like it? That's too bad. If the look and feel of the movie pleased you, you should watch his previous film, Beyond The Black Rainbow, but it's definitely not as audience-friendly as Mandy is...

I do agree with Organizized. Even if the film is bad it won't matter - Nic is 'uncaged' - that is all we need to know, we pay money.

Watched The Hitman's Bodyguard today. Enjoyed it from beginning to end. Very formulaic movie, they know what action-comedy cliche's people dig and gave it to us, adding in enough star power to get it done. One part John Wick, another part The Expendables. Would watch again if it came on tele for sure.

I’m not saying it is (as I haven’t seen it but have it down as a must-see when I get the chance), just saying that I love Nicholas Cage in his “crazy Nic Cage mode” even when the film (not this film, but previous ones) in itself is rather terrible. :XD

Sorry if I wasn't clear on this...
Let’s just say that this movie won't be winning any Oscar's. I did enjoy watching this movie... in much the same way I might enjoy any action movie. In any case don't expect a detailed, clever, plot driven story when you go to see it. You don't expect any insights in human nature from a roller coaster ride, so don't expect any from this. :XD
