Well personally I find Hurt Locker rather overrated. But the same thing can be said about Avatar I guess. I didn't even watch Hurt Locker in one go, I had to split it into two because I got bored and couldn't be arsed, and got forced to watch the end by a friend. While Avatar was a mindboggling and awesome experience to watch in 3D. Personally I would have handed out the best movie to Avatar because of the overall quality and massiveness of the movie aswell as it's success and contribution to film history. And to be honest I'd give best director to Cameron too because of his insane amount of work in the success that became Avatar. I think it's rather sad that things get handed out because "it's a womans turn". That's just complete crap, so now we treat genders differently when it comes to film contrubution? Pffft. Hurt Locker could have gotten the rest of the awards it got imo, but atleast not best director, that one should have gone to Avatar in my opinion. I can't even believe a work of over 10 years and the massive directing from Cameron is being compared to perhaps a 1-2 years tops of work. Hurt Locker is a grand movie, but not grand enough to get the prices it got (best film and directing) in my personal opinion.

I can't really comment on Best Picture b/c I've only seen Inglourious Basterds and Up, but I'm really glad Christopher Waltz won best supporting actor. He had an amazing performance in Inglourious Basterds, and I was glad to see him get recognized.

@3cmm: I'd have to agree with you on the best director group, I would have given it to Cameron; afters 15 years bringing that movie together, I doubt anyone worked harder on a movie than he did. I'm glad Up won a few trophies, it really was a great movie. I haven't seen neither Hurt Locker nor Avatar so I can't voice any opinions for the best film group.

well didn't Cameron already carry 11 awards away in 1997? I guess the Academy wanted to honor some other talent this time around. I don't really think it was that heavily based on the whole gender thing, but I thought the Hurt Locker was great.

I haven't seen The Hurt Locker...but I was tempted to rent it yesterday, though I chose to buy Star Trek, Blood the Last Vampire (live action), and The Half-Blood Prince (3 for $21). Star Trek rocked my socks off!! And I was not disappointed with Blood either. I liked the funky 70's take on it, and that chick kicks massive ass even if it isn't a huge budget actions movie set up.

But again, STAR TREK!! WOOT WOOT!! I wasn't expecting to be let down from what I had heard of it, and I was not in the slightest. In fact, that movie is one of the best adaptations of a classic I have ever seen!! And I was seriously impressed by the casting. AND THE GREEN CHICK!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Also saw Alice in Wonderland. It was good. I liked it. It wasn't deep or emotionally compelling, but it was pretty, Cheshire was oh so cool, and the Mad Hatter can DANCE!! Oh yeah, I really liked Alice too. Thought it was rather empowering from a woman's perspective.

Only major category that wasn't predictable when it came to the winner was Precious for Adapted Screenplay. I was hoping for Up in the Air and thought District 9, but it turned out to be neither.

Other than that, it turned out pretty much exactly as expected. A bit disappointed Tarantino didn't win Original Screenplay for Basterds, but not really surprised. Wouldn't have hurt seeing Basterds win Best Picture, either, but there was no way the Academy would pick that one over Hurt Locker or Avatar from the start, so no biggie.

The Hurt Locker is extremely OVERRATED! I don't see what was so incredible about that movie. What a load of crap, very poor story line. Phonebooth was better than Hurt Locker. Avatar has it's flaws but it deserved more awards imo. I'm very happy that Sandra Bullock got an Oscar; she's an amazing actress! One of my all time favs for sure!

It's funny how you say The Hurt Locker had a poor story line but say Avatar (the movie with the least original and interesting story line of the year) should've won more. Oh well, all a matter of opinion, I suppose. Like I said, I'd have preferred neither Hurt Locker or Avatar to win Best Picture nor Best Director, but I was pretty certain Hurt Locker would take them both. And in my opinion it did deserve it better than Avatar.

Sandra Bullock and Gabourey Sidibe were the only ones I'd seen in the Best Actress category and I thought of it as a tie. They both really nailed their roles. Sandra Bullock winning wasn't much of a shock, either.

Also, Jeff "The Dude" Bridges finally got his Oscar. Man, I hadn't even seen the movie at the time of the Oscars but I still wanted to win it since he wasn't even nominated for perfectly portraying the greatest character of all time. Saw the movie today and I've gotta say, he did deserve it too.

I haven't seen The Hurt Locker, nor do I have any interest to.
Avatar wasn't as revolutionary as the Titanic before it (who won Oscars for both Best Director [James Cameron] and best film). Still, I felt that it deserved more awards than his ex's film.

Hurt Locker was def better than Avatar. Not a bad choice for Best Picture, I definitely agree on Best Director for Bigelow. If not Hurt Locker, then Up in the Air shouldve won Best Picture.

What about Inglourious Basterds?Huh?C'mon I saw The Hurt Locker,I loved the movie,Oscar worthy,no doubt,Avatar to,but Inglourious Basterds,damn,at least Waltz won best supporting actor and congratz to Sandra Bullock!The Basterds were my favs this year.AND CONGRATULATIONS to Jeff Bridges,finally winning his first oscar!!

Inglorious Basterd's didn't live up to it's hype. If it were marketed less, it would have made a bigger impact.

Exactly, it was a good movie; I'd watch it again but not right now. It's not his(Tarantino) best work and imo didn't deserve an oscar for best film.

I loved the Inglorious Basterds, because it was funny. not for best film at oscars though.

I cried at Sandra Bullock's oscar speech.

It might be late but I thought Avatar was one big mash-up of Princess Mononoke and Vision of Escaflowne, with FF10 environment.
