When summoning the Spirit King. The king transferred the magical energy to Lucy. When lucy used urano metria she no longer had magic to maintain the summoning of the king
Her gave her Aquarius water powers, he didn't boost her magical energy as in Etherno.

I think you're exaggerating the "limited power" part. We don't know how much power Mercphobia has; we only understand that he has the power to fight temporarily. Karameel is not the best indicator in this discussion, as she believed that Merc had no power before the lacrima appeared, and Merc also corrected her.

And your example isn't a good one, as Mercphobia didn't have much control over his powers at the start of his arc. Faris was the one who had control over Mercphobia's magical power, being able to increase or reduce it.
We know that Merc doesn't have his full power. Him correcting her could just be to set the record straight that he's not completely useless. We don't know how much power he has left, true, but the fact that he was in a very low-power state before the lacrima, and is back to not having his full power after it was destroyed indicates that he went back to his new 'normal', since he shouldn't be having any power issues at all, otherwise.

If we assume that he has a large amount of his original power back, then why not just say so? Why not alleviate Karmeel's concerns instead of keeping his usefulness vague?

Regarding my example, that was to show that Merc can't dish out high-powered attacks when having a limited amount of his mp. For example, if he has 30% of his magical power, he can't use that to hit as hard as he normally would for a limited amount of time. If he doesn't have his full power, then any actual full power DG would trash him.

Regarding Natsu, I disagree. Lucy mentioned that something horrible was going to happen a few chapters ago, and when she calmed Natsu down in the Mercphobia arc, she got burned. If Natsu loses control next time, the situation will be much more drastic, as it looks like the power boost he will receive will be massively stronger.

And isn't it a coincidence that Lucy gets a huge buff (Mercphobia) in the same chapter where Hiro is foreshadowing the super special flames that Natsu will consume?

Remember that it was in the Mercphobia arc that Natsu went crazy. The parallels are all there. I'm not saying that Lucy will beat Natsu, but it seems that Mashima is building up to a moment where Lucy will have to calm Natsu down through powerful water magic to contain his flames until he regains consciousness and masters his new powers.
This doesn't really dispute what I said previously, though. We're currently debating whether or not Merc is a huge buff, so to me it doesn't seem like much of a coincidence. The Merc stuff gives the impression that he's gonna be used in a fight where his powers might give out. It would be weird and out of character for Lucy to just attack Natsu if he goes berserk again, instead of trying to calm him down at risk to herself like she did last time (not to mention that Merc should be incapable of dealing with his flames, based on their last fight).

Her ominous narration could be something related to Natsu, it could mean that either Aquarius or Merc ends up dying, or it could mean nothing at all like the Alverass one. I have a feeling it'll be the last one, but we'll have to see

The Merc stuff is being portrayed as him being used in a fight, not to specifically contain Natsu's flames (which he should be incapable of doing based on their last fight). She could just try and hug him again or something, assuming it comes to that.

What Mashima seems to imply is that Mercphobia is not at full strength; however, we don't know how much power he possesses. He didn't reassure Karameel precisely because he is not at full power, and his opponents are Dragon Gods at full strength.

The point is that although Merc isn't at full strength, that doesn't mean he can't fight other Dragon Gods or arc-relevant characters. An interesting example is Bestia. I doubt she is as powerful as Faris, but she intends to compete with the Black Mage at x1. Mashima will probably use Bestia to distract Faris for a relevant period of time.

We must also take into consideration that Mercphobia had less than half of his power in his arc, yet he already demonstrated an absurd level of strength.

So, the comparison we should make is how much power Merc lost from his original 100% after the removal of the Dogramag nerf.

In short, I think Merc should be able to hold off the other Dragon Gods, but he won't be able to win.

The way I see it is that Lucy will summon Mecphobia and she will get the Dragon Stardress.

Mecphobia will help, but tell Lucy to break her key to summon the King, that way it makes a free summon for Lucy, instead of breaking a gold key again, but Mecphobia will not disappear it will stay there.

But as for the Aquarius Stardress, even if Mecphobia's key is broken, she will still be able to use the Dragon Stardress.

I'm waiting for a mixed Aquarius x Dragon Stardress.

The King comes to do what needs to be done and gives the King's Stardress to Lucy and she can keep it, no need to summon the King for that.

And there may be a pirouette that makes the king's key forged or that thanks to the king's stardress, Lucy can summon the king but it consumes a lot of magic.

To summon the CSK you have to break a gold key. Breaking any other key won't work.

Yes officially, but I don't see Lucy re-breaking another golden key, so we'll see if it works with Mechphobia's, it would be logical it's not an ordinary key.

Because in this case we will never see the king again, unless he self-summons like he did for Loki's judgment.

And then we've been waiting for the Stardress for a long time.

She can always break Capricorn key. She didn't Summon him even once since Tenrou, so she wouldn't even notice he's missing 🤷‍♂️

It is necessary to have a powerful bond with the creature for the key to be broken and the King to be summoned. And Merc is not a Celestial Spirit, so he is not subject to the rules of the Celestial World.

Although Lucy and Merc have become friends, they still don’t have a strong enough bond.

I think it’s unlikely that the key will be broken. In fact, I believe Mercphobia’s key will be the first of many others Lucy will obtain from different creatures in the future.

It's amazing that Lucy has grown so much in the 100-year quest.

I remember in Alvarez, she could barely fight Brandish, who was restricting her power. And currently in the 100-year quest, she has been compared in power to Brandish and will now surpass God Serena's power level after defeating Luso Signario.

Narratively, Lucy will be above the wizard who was once the strongest in Ishgar.

Lucy's insane growth in a journey that constantly requires her to face stronger wizards in each arc has made her develop very quickly.

This is different from the original series where problems came without her having control or desire to face them.

This arc will completely conclude the character's development.

"barely fight bradish"? brandish is stronger than makarov and pretty much the 10 wizard saints iirc. Comic relief aside, lucy has had pretty big roles in most arcs. By the alvarez arc lucy is unbelievably powerful in the grand scheme of things (though enemies by that point make most of the 10 wizard saints look like chumps).

This is a comparison of Lucy's power level in Alvarez to her current power level. I'm well aware of how powerful Brandish is, she showed it recently against Mercphobia.

In Alvarez, Lucy's importance was focused on support. She saved the entire Jacob's Guild, rewrote Natsu's book, learned and used FS to seal Acno, among other things.

However, in the 100-year quest, Lucy is portrayed as a fighter, who has reached the level of Brandish (one of the most powerful mages on the planet) and will surpass the level of God Serena (the mage who was once the strongest in Ishgar) soon.

This is one of the few things that Mashima managed to develop perfectly.

After countless fights alongside Fairy Tail, Lucy has reached the peak of her confidence and seriousness on the battlefield. She no longer backs down and does not seem scared of her enemies. Definitely an incredible character development is coming to its conclusion.

It has been excellent to follow Lucy. :hee

So, what are people’s thoughts on the new Lucy buff? I’ve seen people ranking her above Erza now since its reveal.

I personally think it’s a situational buff and not exactly a feat for her power despite it being a cool moment.

I have mixed feelings.

The new form will only last a few minutes—which isn't a bad thing, since Hiro often imposes such time limits on powerful battle forms.

The question is whether Lucy will obtain Selene's key. It seems Hiro is developing Selene and Merc as a couple—much like Scorpio and Aquarius—so it is possible that Lucy might acquire Selene's key as well, keeping the two Dragon Gods together.

I also find it unlikely that Mashima would simply discard the design for this new form of Lucy's.

In any case, the only thing that appears to be "permanent" is the summoning of Mercphobia.

I don't expect Lucy to be stronger than Erza; I don't think Mashima would do something like that.

It is, just like King Fire Mode Natsu. They are not Lucy and Natsu's own powers but a tag, just like Naruto and Kurama.

By her own powers, even if Lucy has grown strong, she remains as the weakest of the Main Team (can be on par with Wendy who have both shown great development).

This external help can put Lucy's level beyond Erza's, but she is not aware of her own abilities and she is surprised of her own strength.
She is like a Diamond which need to be polished with some teaching, just like Wendy and Eileen (same situation except Wendy had great basis about enchants).

But as Merc and Selene will not stay in her body, it will not be permanent.
Except if Lucy gains Selene's key. So that she should be able to summon them in the future to do the same thing. If not, she should use half of her current power using Merc's "only".

With Merc' s only, it's already a huge gap (around Wendy + Eileen, perhaps even more).

Wait and see to see how she manages against EB in comparison to the others, with Lucy's handicap to be a newby about her own abilities.

Currently, she is Wendy "Belserion" 2.0 but with the power of 2 Dragon Gods combined. In that so, Lucy should be vastly stronger as potential without mastery.
