He did go on to say putting the romance factor aside, he's currently drawing them as "more than friends but less than lovers" (what in the world was "no less than lovers"?!) Hiro wouldn't just flat out say he's currently drawing NaLu as romantic.

The fact that he said he originally had no intention of making NaLu romantic and mentions the fans means that if the couple happens it's because of popularity.

Edit: I just remembered why the "more than friends less than lovers" sounded familiar. Ichiruki anyone? Oh wait. That ship sunk.

I mean, it's past tense. "Had" no intention. So people can't say NaLu was planned from the start: it wasn't. Who knows what will happen though. Hiro could have also changed his mind on his own I guess.

This is a note from Fairy Tail S1 volume that came out. This is basically Hiro Mashima's notes on the special chapter "Watch out for guys who show a keen interest". You'll notice the title of the chapter cover is the same as the heading in the message (image in spoiler tag above). Basically, Hiro referencing his ideas and intentions when he wrote the special chapter. I'm not going to write out the Japanese for the first line, but it's basically Hiro referencing to the fact that the special chapter was a cute one. Not going to write out the Japanese for the last line either, but it's basically Hiro saying that Lucy's fantasies in the chapter was also cute. The three lines below are the interesting tid-bits.

A romance between Natsu and Lucy's wasn't the intention, just to misdirect the reader's expectations.

Leaving future drawings of romance aside, for now they are drawn to be more than friends less than lovers.
そういう関係性、好きかもしれないです。

So basically... nothing we didn't already know. Hiro is not saying that he's on a warpath to make NaLu cannon. Nor is he saying he hates the idea of NaLu. Don't make a huge deal out of it before you read the special chapter (Link here). Afterwards, what Hiro is saying should make sense.

My impression was more along the lines Hiro admitting that he didn't plan to draw romance between Natsu and Lucy, however starting at the time of that special chapter he ended up contrarily making the fans think that way and expect it (in general). That's why he mentions the future. Makes sense when you remember the Hirano comment.

I'm almost certain the notes are in response to events that happened in the special chapter. Likewise, Aya Hirano's comment was in response to the Gajevy kiss scene and whether Natsu and Lucy would get a simialr scene. I think thefairytales mentioned it sometime ago:

But you're probably right on Hiro not having a solid idea of what the pairings were going to be back in the early days. Chapter 71 was right before the Tower of Heaven arc. The pairings as we know them right now pretty much didn't begin to take shape until the Tenrou Island Arc. I wouldn't be surprised if Hiro has changed his minds several time since then and now. Hiro also said at one time that he would at the series at 10 volumes. If he had really done that, there would have been no pairings for any of the characters.

"I had no intention at all" to make NaLu romance. He only made fans anticipate it.

Though, if Mashima wanted, he can easily make the pairing canon. Like, unlike Ichigo and Rukia, there has been hints here and there that strongly suggested things.

I don't even know why that person on tumblr decided to translate. They clearly have no idea what they are talking about.

The notes include thoughts from the omake chapter of course, but it doesn't specify the comment he made about NaLu romance "not being intended" was only for that chapter. It gives off an "in general" sense. The omake would make people think NaLu was headed for romance, but that wasn't Hiro's intention. Because I am pretty sure he said he made readers anticipate romantic NaLu "starting" at the time of the omake.

As for Hirano, they spoke of the Jerza almost kiss scene and Gajevy CPR. She says that Mashima said he will definitely not draw "it" (something like that) for NaLu. Many fans, even Japanese, took that as him saying he isn't planning romance for them. On Twitter, he made a point to say he meant he wasn't drawing it at the time the events occurred in the manga, but doesn't know what will happen in the future. So safe to say even as far as Tartaros, Hiro wasn't intending to make NaLu romantic.

Whatever left Bleach fandom had Kubo must have gotten hate for not making Rukia X Ichigo canon. And now Pokemon Anime is taking crap for not making Ash X Serena canon as well, though the next series new art isn't really helping either and well, just over all the third half of XY.

I see it more as an opportunity for Natsu and Erza become an official couple.

Naruto x Sakura was probably popular, but so was Naruto x Hinata. Just so happened Sakura fucked it up, but people supported it more because they thought main characters should get the girls they want. Idiotic logic, especially when Sakura's feelings have always been for Sasuke. Natsu and Lucy really have no one else to be paired with, or anyone else to be... though Lucy does have Leo and Natsu did have Lisanna.
