If you are not sure what they are (the Oscar's I mean), then I am not sure how you found this thread...

Just think of a small golden statue of a man holding a stick being given out to some undeserving actors/actresses/directors/general nobodies related to films in some way or other.
Think far too many emotions
Crying (most fake, but there may be a few genuine tears here and there)
Fancy costumes
Think the exact kind of occasion which Kanye West may rush up on stage, uninvited, and make an arse of himself!

To be fair, you should really play - even if you hate the Oscars - especially if you hate the Oscars... only because, if you win, you can lord it over all those who actually do care!

It's that time again, time to pretend that you know more about films than you actually do.
Time to unequivocally state why your choices are correct and why anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron
(please don't actually do this - peace and love for everyone ね )

Anyway
It all finally culminates on Sunday the 4th March, at the 90th Academy Awards.
Awards will be handed out for all kinds of film related categories - Best Film, Best Actor/Actress in a leading role, Best person-who-wasn't-good-enough-to-be-the-leading-actor-so-we-made-a-runners-up-prize-to-make-them-feel-better... There's even an award for hairstyling?!?

We at Mangahelpers are hosting our own Oscar winners poll, with the chance to win your own Oscar. As an award badge [again, if anyone asks, although I wrote this, I don't promise nuthin'!].

Rules:
- Go here and make your picks!
- The user with the most correct guesses wins the award. Remember to leave your username in the poll.
last year, some bright sparks forgot this/wrote random handles (they didn't win, funnily enough - mainly cause I am far too lazy to try and guess/think about who is who - make it simple if you want to win. If not, just write your name as M3J and pick shitty picks)
- Only 1 entry allowed. In case an user does multiple entries, only the last one counts.

I guess in the past with 5 films, some other good ones were shunned. Now with 10, you have a wider selection, even though with that number, better movies always get left out.

I've only seen Gravity from that Best Picture list; this latter half of 2013 and beginning of the new year hasn't been a good for me cinema-wise. I don't see Gravity winning it though. Not even sure it deserves a nomination.

Yes but so can be said about other categories. Sure its the most important one, but it seems illogical to me for such an event. Dunno, a sudden change of rues like that has really effected me enjoying the Oscars. It seems they all get a chance, but in the end one gets it, I see no point.

Since actors/actress/director can also be expanded.

Captain Phillips for me. A 10-15 minutes buildup followed by a great suspense with great acting.
The one to avoid: American Hustle.

American Hustle was something I'm definitely going to watch though. Can't avoid J-Law. Even if I don't enjoy the movie as a whole, I'll at least enjoy her.

Gosh I really hate this build up to the important awards. Not that these first ones are not interesting, but the anticipation is bigger with the final ones. I am so glad I missed tonight's "red carpet" part.

A lot of those awards were predictable; If you had followed the results from the Golden Globes and Baftas. Some were a slight surprise for me, mainly J-Law not winning. Not because I think she's the better candidate in that category but it seemed to be going that way. Honestly I can't really judge, as I hadn't seen any of the films besides Gravity.

Congrats to all the winners though, The McConnaissance is now full circle and even bigger kudos to Robert Lopez for being the youngest and fastest to achieve an EGOT( Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony); done in 10 years or less I think they said. He and wife's acceptance speech was quite adorable too; possibly my favourite of the night.

And WTF was up with John Travolta not remembering Idina Menzel?

All in all, the results are acceptable. Matt winning is great imo, prefer him over Bale, DiCaprio or Ejiofor to be honest, only Bern would have been ok as well.
12 Years winning best picture is ok, Blanchett for best actress is really great. Only McQueen not getting the best director is a bummer but at least the disaster called American Hustle did not get anything.

Really glad Blanchett won, she has been one of my favourite actresses for a long time and I've read many great things about Blue Jasmine. Now I'll watch it to honour her .

The DiCaprio memes have been pouring in through the social media sites like no tomorrow. Poor guy but this wasn't his year, and if he had seen any of the other films, I'm sure he'd know it too.

So Ellen did it, her Selfie photo is actually the most shared one? Lol, that was good, but Jolie is bad in that picture, and Brad sure knows how to get into a lot of pictures, I loved Ellen telling him " Oh, did you get into that one as well?" after they took the selfie.

Yeah, DiCaprio might really turn out to be the Gary Oldman of our generation, only that he already has 4 nominations under his belt at least while Oldman got only one in 2012 (but nominating a performance of Bale like that in AH, jesus).

There were, it just seems that the Academy is going not only for the best performances but the ones that make the most noise, you know, get attention in one way or the other. There were certainly good performances this year, like Joaquin Phoenix in Her who has been completely overlooked, surprisingly Hugh Jackman in Prisoners, a movie that did not get any recognition at all, Geoffrey Rush has shown maybe 2 of his best performances this year in the Book Thief (supporting) and The Best Offer, Daniel Brühl´s performance in Rush was really great (an i have seen Niki Lauda on TV a lot of times), even Matthew Goode in Stoker was impeccable. The list goes on but i guess none of them was as impressive as Bale´s wig.

Matt winning was definitely a surprise for me, since I had always been thinking that Ejiofor would get it. It's a pretty predictable that Leo was not going to win an Oscar, not only because his performance as Jordan is my least favorite film starring him, but also given the fact that, like previous years, other actors have been outperforming him. He was also snubbed for his Django Unchained performance as well, which puzzled me.

I'm also agree with the fact that Joaquin Phoenix not being nominated is a strange thing. That guy is simply marvelous in Her. Also, Gravity is.. pretty underwhelming for me personally. No surprise it swept the Oscar last night though.

Jlaw is starting to annoy me. She is an attention whore. Did she really had to fall again? At the beginning, she was a refreshing personality in hollywood. Now her whole personality sounds a little fake to me.

Don't forget Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips. His best role in a long while which played a big part in the movie being as good as it was. But I guess he's a "has-been" by now that young people don't care about (or so the Academy thinks, anyway?)...

I do think the all of the performances in this category were good, though. Bruce Dern was great, Bale was the only one in AH who actually became his character (I did like the other actors/actresses as well but still couldn't help but see them as just that - actors and actresses, rather than characters), Chiwetel Ejiofor was intense and Leo DiCaprio could've easily gotten his Oscar if it wasn't for McConaughey's spot-on performance. In my mind, there was no real contest, but that's just because McConaughey was in a league of his own, not because the others put in bad performances. Maybe not Oscar-worthy all of them, but still really enjoyable.

Jlaw is starting to annoy me. She is an attention whore. Did she really had to fall again? At the beginning, she was a refreshing personality in hollywood. Now her whole personality sounds a little fake to me.

I would still party with her before any other celebrity in Hollywood. Hands down.



By the way, who the hell is "The Academy" anyway? What credentials must you have to be a part of it? I just realized I have no idea.
