If you are not sure what they are (the Oscar's I mean), then I am not sure how you found this thread...

Just think of a small golden statue of a man holding a stick being given out to some undeserving actors/actresses/directors/general nobodies related to films in some way or other.
Think far too many emotions
Crying (most fake, but there may be a few genuine tears here and there)
Fancy costumes
Think the exact kind of occasion which Kanye West may rush up on stage, uninvited, and make an arse of himself!

Also, to increase the fun all the way to 11 - there's a fancy competition (with a possibility to win a nice badge also [terms and conditions apply - badges may be revoked/not given out at moderator's discretion])

To be fair, you should really play - even if you hate the Oscars - especially if you hate the Oscars... only because, if you win, you can lord it over all those who actually do care!

It's that time again, time to pretend that you know more about films than you actually do.
Time to unequivocally state why your choices are correct and why anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron

It all finally culminates on Sunday the 4th March, at the 90th Academy Awards.
Awards will be handed out for all kinds of film related categories - Best Film, Best Actor/Actress in a leading role, Best person-who-wasn't-good-enough-to-be-the-leading-actor-so-we-made-a-runners-up-prize-to-make-them-feel-better... There's even an award for hairstyling?!?

We at Mangahelpers are hosting our own Oscar winners poll, with the chance to win your own Oscar. As an award badge [again, if anyone asks, although I wrote this, I don't promise nuthin'!].

Rules:
- Go here and make your picks!
- The user with the most correct guesses wins the award. Remember to leave your username in the poll.
last year, some bright sparks forgot this/wrote random handles (they didn't win, funnily enough - mainly cause I am far too lazy to try and guess/think about who is who - make it simple if you want to win. If not, just write your name as M3J and pick shitty picks)
- Only 1 entry allowed. In case an user does multiple entries, only the last one counts.
- In case of a tie, the user with most corrects in the Big 5 Categories wins. (Best Film, Directing, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and both Screenplay categories)
- If still a tie, then I am sure we will be able to think of some way to separate the quality wheat from the less-savoury chaff

I don't know either. Still I do it almost every year. Never really worth. Even watching the Superbowl makes more sense, even if the highlight of the game for me are usually the half.time show and the movie trailers.

I watched it live once. But it definitely wasn't worth the hassle and/or annoyance.

Now I'll read the results in a min or two, get angry for it for another min or two and then I'll forget about it.

Yeah, I used to have a couple friends over and we’d make a thing of it like that too. Then tradition has sort of stuck and I try to watch it every year anyway, even though I don’t take it all seriously anymore. Same with Super Bowl as well.

Missed Super Bowl this year though. So either I try to cling to tradition by watching the Oscars or I just let it all go and maybe don’t feel like I have to watch either in the future. We’ll see what happens.

Almost forgot about the Razzies. Seems like the years biggest success there was, not so suprisingly, The Emoji Movie.

Still pondering if I should change my sound categories and editing. Currently favoring Baby Driver over Dunkirk there, but I feel like it's gonna go the other way.

Also at the moment I have zero awards for Lady Bird, and I don't think it gonna go that way.

I don't think Lady Bird is getting anything. If anything, it's Best Original Screenplay, but 3BB and Get Out have much better chances there.

I so want Baby Driver to win both sound categories and Best Editing too, but I have Dunkirk down for all of those. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Baby Driver takes just one of them though.

The question is... why do I even feel like going through the bother?

I kinda always feel the same way, but now that I think about it I think I've been watching the whole thing live since 2005 maybe?

Anyway, for me it's mostly about watching it live, as it's happening. There's kind of a special thing to it for me at least, knowing that I'm actually witnessing the whole thing before millions of others who will only get to know what's up when they get up in the morning.

It's like uh, watching re-runs and/or the redux version jusn't isn't authentic enough. Kind of like going to the premiere of a movie, or get the first edition of a book or pressing of a vinyl... Maybe it's weird but hey I'm OCD when it comes to meaningless things like that.

Anyway, there have been 2 major upsets that almost made me not want to watch the Oscars ever again:
- Javier Bardem losing best actor to Colin Firth (I knew he wasn't gonna win but Biutiful is simply an amazing film and Bardem was spectacular);
- Michael Keaton not winning Best Actor for Birdman. All throughout the ceremony I was super hyped seeing Birdman snag all the prizes, and then I just went "WHAT- WHAT THE FUCK WHAT" when Eddie Redmayne won instead. Didn't make any sense whatsoever.

And yeah, most people are right; the Oscars don't really "matter", it's mostly people just patting themselves on the back, but in the end I always end up thinking, what's the big deal? It's only one show per year, I might as well watch it.

Especially this year when I've seen a bunch of the nominated films as well.

Also I graduated from a filmmaking course so yeah, That doesn't mean I HAVE to watch it but I might as well and be on top of things.

It's funny because now you can watch the ceremony and go "yeah, that'll totally be a gif/new meme in a few hours", which is hilarious too.

Yeah, same reason why Blade Runner 2049 wasn't even nominated for Best Film. I mean trust me, I get it, not matter how much we love films, acting and whatnot, it's still entertainment. It sucks, but those people still take into account revenue, box office success and all that crap. I understand why they do it, but eh.

Films like Dunkirk and The Post shouldn't even have been nominated to begin with, but apparently since 2 years ago 20% of the academy members are newcomers, so maybe we'll start seeing more and more "underdogs", even though last year kinda was the year of underdog movies. Wasn't it the year where most/all Best Picture nominees were incredibly "cheap" movies to make? I think so.

But anyway, when it's Oscars time there's always "anonymous" members talking about their voting choices (you can see a bunch of these articles on IndieWire for example) and what sucks is that a lot of people vote for movies that they haven't even seen, and sometimes they just let their kids decide who they want to vote for in a certain category.

I think they should take voting a little more seriously. First off, it should be mandatory to watch every single nominated film (or at least 2/3rds or more than half of all the films in a designated category) and they should go through some sort of Q&A form to definitely assert whether they saw those movies or not.

I know no one cares enough to change it all, besides pretty much all of those members are rich people who are somewhat indifferent to the whole thing, but I think the Academy Awards should really raise its level a bit, especially nowadays with everyone trying to make the industry somewhat better for everyone.

Time to put some RESPEK on it.

The Keaton snub though angered me the most. First of all his performance in Birdman was incredible on so many levels.

Secondly, while I have nothing against Redmayne, who is also a talented guy, I'm kinda annoyed how always a straight guy doing a transgender or other sexual minority role seems to give the performance some kind of extra glow of how much talent it takes to go so far from your own comfort zones. I mean sure, that' true kinda, but I refuse to belief that there really aren't any talented transgender actors who could have done the role justice.

People whine now about Lawrence doing a bad Russian accent instead of casting a Russian lead actor, but for transgender roles that kind of whining isn' a thing.

I haven't seen The Post, but Dunkirk imho is a 9/10 flick and deserves the nod.

Blade Runner should have been there though.

The Post annoyes me a little. Not for any really valid reasons though. It most likely is a good film. But it just feels like it ticks to many Oscar boxes perfectly. Almost like it tailor made the Oscars in mind. Streep, Hanks, Spielberg. Historical subject. Timely theme of womens rights and journalism. I mean all of those things are generally good things. But it just seems too perfect.

Why I enjoyed Dunkirk though, is what it didn't feel the usual war film. It didn't really have a main character, or rather the main character really is the time and the place rather than a person. And it had very little of actual fighting, that is usually associated as war, but it was more about those nerve racking quite moments of depression in between the battles.

The one hero saves them all trope with Hardy felt a bit forced in, but still liked that part of the story too.

That's the thing, Danish Girl flew under everyone's radar, didn't hit the mainstream big enough.

That's my problem with pretty much everything and everyone in the past..what? 4 years or so. I was so agitated by the Wonder Woman Oscar movie, that movie isn't Oscar-worthy, just because a woman is now a lead in her own superhero movie (wow that never happened before) doesn't mean it should get an Oscar. Not because it has a female director or a female superhero. Where is all this love for a female-powered-vehicle like Lady Bird? No one bats an eye at that incredible movie.

The same goes for Black Panther at the moment, that whole fucking movement behind it is fucking insane..

Or people aren't even rejoicing that much about first ever female cinematographer being nominated for the Oscar. (Mudbound, Rachel Morrison). Which is a thing I'm also super happy about. Though she is against Deakins so I can't root for her that bigly. Because Deakins <3

90% of the audience doesn't even know what a cinematographer is, I'll put my money on that.
