If you are not sure what they are (the Oscar's I mean), then I am not sure how you found this thread...

Just think of a small golden statue of a man holding a stick being given out to some undeserving actors/actresses/directors/general nobodies related to films in some way or other.
Think far too many emotions
Crying (most fake, but there may be a few genuine tears here and there)
Fancy costumes
Think the exact kind of occasion which Kanye West may rush up on stage, uninvited, and make an arse of himself!

So ask yourself: Who do you think is going to win? What are your favourite nominees?
Who do you think will win (and more importantly, who do you think should win)...

Also, to increase the fun all the way to 11 - there's a fancy competition (with a possibility to win a nice badge also [terms and conditions apply - badges may be revoked/not given out at moderator's discretion])

To be fair, you should really play - even if you hate the Oscars - especially if you hate the Oscars... only because, if you win, you can lord it over all those who actually do care!

So, with that all said, I present:

MH Oscars Contest 2018

It's that time again, time to pretend that you know more about films than you actually do.
Time to unequivocally state why your choices are correct and why anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron
(please don't actually do this - peace and love for everyone ね )

Anyway
It all finally culminates on Sunday the 4th March, at the 90th Academy Awards.
Awards will be handed out for all kinds of film related categories - Best Film, Best Actor/Actress in a leading role, Best person-who-wasn't-good-enough-to-be-the-leading-actor-so-we-made-a-runners-up-prize-to-make-them-feel-better... There's even an award for hairstyling?!?

We at Mangahelpers are hosting our own Oscar winners poll, with the chance to win your own Oscar. As an award badge [again, if anyone asks, although I wrote this, I don't promise nuthin'!].

Rules:
- Go here and make your picks!
- The user with the most correct guesses wins the award. Remember to leave your username in the poll.
last year, some bright sparks forgot this/wrote random handles (they didn't win, funnily enough - mainly cause I am far too lazy to try and guess/think about who is who - make it simple if you want to win. If not, just write your name as M3J and pick shitty picks)
- Only 1 entry allowed. In case an user does multiple entries, only the last one counts.
- In case of a tie, the user with most corrects in the Big 5 Categories wins. (Best Film, Directing, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and both Screenplay categories)
- If still a tie, then I am sure we will be able to think of some way to separate the quality wheat from the less-savoury chaff
-There is time to vote until 5:00 p.m. PST on March 4, 2018 // 1AM on March 5th GMT
- You are allowed to discuss your picks and personal favourites in the thread. Telling us why you voted how you voted is highly important necessary recommended.

1. You weren't actually trying - if you were, you'd have crushed everyone else easily!
2. You didn't really care anyway
3. Someone probably cheated, bribing a mod to miscount their votes...
4. Who are these mods anyway - blithering idiots must have made a mistake somewhere or other
5. It's only the Oscars - not some actually important award - like the Golden Cleric or something

Deakins gotta win this. The fact that one of the truly greatest cinematographers ever has been nominated 14 times and never won is a crime.

It'd be nice if Blade Runner won Best Visual Effects, but I went for Apes because it's sort of the swan song for the series, and it's lost twice already. Haven't actually seen it so can't say if it deserves it, but as we've established, people like to acknowledge films for other reasons than them being the best. Actors win Oscars for "the sum of all their previous roles" rather than the one film they're nominated for so often these days, and it's kinda the same deal in other categories as well.

Well that's true. The majority I think really don't know any of the experts from the categories other than actors and directors.

I'm used to explaining the difference of sound editing and sound mixing to people, but once I found myself in a discussion where I had to explain why those things are separate from the Score category.

Apes does deserve some attention. I haven't seen the last one, but it was an enjoyable action/scifi series.

Deakins is love. The guy is the master of lighting and character shots. And a super nice guy too, he still frequently answers the indie film makers and hobbyists of all ages questions about cinematography and lighting. Even gives some ideas or feedback if they describe their projects to him. He is super easy to approach even after all this time and fame.

The movie was a spectacle from start to finish, but Leonard DiCaprio winning for Best Actor for his character in the film? I could probably come up with 10 other roles he's had that were MUCH more deserving of a nomination/win over the role that actually got him the Oscar.

Like I said, the whole thing was amazing, but his character arc just wasn't. As many people jokingly pointed out, he just spends the movie walking around and grunting, hellbent on revenge. There just wasn't much to it.

In my mind, him winning for that particular role meant that Elijah Wood should've been nominated/won for Frodo as well. I know it's not the same, but it kinda is in some aspects.

Yeah, that's what was mentioned here before. Most of the winners don't win because of their actual nomination, but for their past works. Their history in Hollywood.

Sam Rockwell is an amazing actor, his movie-record maybe isn't, but he had some amazing roles.
The same goes for Gary Oldman, he's had a few other roles that should've got him nominated at least, but no, and although DH is a good movie and his performance is excellent, all I feel is that his nomination went like this;

"The guy who played in DH? Yeah, sure, he was okay"
"That was Gary Oldman!"
"NO WAY, THAT DUDE IS BRILLIANT! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT"

Which should only play into the make-up department, imo.

Speaking of make-up and acting, I think DiCaprio was even more deserving of the award for J. Edgar than he was for Revenant. (Which is kinda hypocritical to say as I just dissed on casting straight males for sexual minority roles )

Gotta say though, DH isn’t even close to my favorite Oldman performance but it was still pretty damn impressive. This is a rare case where I can get behind the nomination even though it owes a lot to his previous body of work as well. How the film was nominated for Best Picture is miles beyond me, but he deserves the win.

I liked Timothée Chalamet too but the two roles are so different. Chalamet has a much more subtle role which he handles brilliantly while Oldman has an incredible weight and power behind his every line, while still managing to portray subtlety even through all the make-up. He deserves it for sure imo.

Also from what I understand he has shat on award shows in the past and said some pretty nasty things which, SURPISE SURPRISE, are now coming to light once again... But it's Gary Oldman so the Academy might not think too much about it, and we all know how the Academy loves their WWII flicks.

Like I said, I haven't seen Darkest Hour nor have I ever felt even remotely interested in seeing it because there's no appeal to it as there was for films like The Pianist, Schindler's List, The Fall, Saving Private Ryan, etc.

But yeah, from some comments that I've read coming from Academy members themselves it seems that Gary Oldman is "a lock" (100% guaranteed to win), and for that alone I even thought about changing my vote, but I really hope this doesn't turn out to be true.

I realize now that Daniel Kaluuya (the one I picked) probably won't win, either, but Timothée winning would be so damn awesome.

as @Organizized said, we're talking about two very different kinds of acting and "giving yourself to your role", but man, the stuff that Timothée and Arnie Hammer actually had to do on screen... not everyone can do that shit.

The fact that Hammer himself didn't get a nomination for Supporting Actor is quite upsetting, too.

Like I said, I haven't seen Darkest Hour nor have I ever felt even remotely interested in seeing it because there's no appeal to it as there was for films like The Pianist, Schindler's List, The Fall, Saving Private Ryan, etc..

that's one shitty movie if you ask me.

I did mention it a few days ago I think, in a similar rant. Why do you think it's shitty? I mean it's not one of my "all time favorites" or anything of the sort, but it's pretty striking in my opinion, and I especially like Fiennes' portrayal.

Voldemort did a great job in the movie, definitely, so did Neeson, but in my opinion it's one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.

It's tough for me every year because sometimes I'm torn between voting for those I KNOW will win, and those I would like to win.
