Re: The Tennis Thread- Wimbledon (23/06-06/07)

Was watching Monaco - Tsonga (and I say was because ESPN here decided to suddenly change it to Liverpool - City... I don't complain tho), pretty close match, I really don't see Tsonga being one of the favourites to win the US Open, at all.

I don't like that Djokovic said that tennis isn't his No. 1 priority anymore.
What is it, then?

If that's the case, then I hope Murray or Federer wins it. I mean, does he have kids? :s

And Murray taken to 4 sets on the opening match. This is gonna be a rollercoster for him.

The new wife is pregnant. He says that his focus is the family now.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Yeah i heard that quote...i know he has a family but federer and Agassi managed to properly spread out their focus. Murray looks shaky, Tsonga did too for a bit.

Re: The Tennis Thread

I was going to make the same point about Federer and he has 4 kids now. I hope this doesn't become an excuse for when Djoko loses matches; that'd be a shame.

Murray did struggle in this opener, I hope he does better else he won't be getting very far in this tournament.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Federer's kids motivate him, winning Wimbledon in front of his daughters brought him to tears. But i think kids motivate /most/ players. I've heard hewitt, haas and even blake say that playing in front their kids was something important to them. I think Djokovic will be fine after the baby is born, but idk about the open itself.....

Errani beat Venus with the uber-rare scoreline of 6-0 0-6 7-6.

In consecutive days, Halep and Kvitova, the No.2 and 3 seeds, are knocked out by qualifiers.

Hoping Serena and Wozniacki carry on forward now that there's less seeded top players. Murray also won :nod

Re: The Tennis Thread

Atobe, Bouchard struggled in the heat and lost...unfortunate. Interestingly, she had the most wins in Majors this year on the women's side.

Tsonga flagged and choked away sets that he was winning, so Murray won in straight sets. Djokovic vs Murray on Wednesday, then.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Did anyone catch Sharapova vs Wozniacki last night? really enjoyed watching that. Some fierce exchanges there and in the end Sharapova lost her cool and made a number of key faults.

Yeah i watched her go :(, would have been awesome if she made the semis of every major this year. She suffers from what i call sloane syndrome: Well in majors.....poorly in the lesser events.

I expected Murray to win but not in straights, good on Djoker though. I was watching him and thinking "haha if this was a few years ago Djoker would have retired"

@GoldB sad sharapova is out...all the top 10 seeds minus wozniaki/serena are out i think lmao

Except, Sloane's been poor in Majors this year.

Tsonga choked that match away, that's all I can say. It's been a number of years since Djokovic retired, though. :)

I'm not sad that Sharapova's gone. I find her singularly fake, as well as annoying to watch, what with all of the screaming.

Indeed, only Serena and Wozniacki are left. Errani and Pennetta both were in the top 10, though.

I was very surprised to see Murray win in straight sets too. The match was tighter than the scoreline suggested; they weren't easy sets but he did well to take his chances when Tsonga faultered.
Ha! it's a shame we can't make the same joke about Novak anymore, isn't it? He was outstanding in the first set against Kolschreiber but then flattened out and then fought his way through the rest.

Yep, I know there's no one left; I'm undecided on who I'm rooting for here; Serena or Caroline. Serena has hardly played her best in this tournament and I thought she was lucky to win in 2 sets against her last opponent, whereas Wozniacki was really good against Sharapova and I think she needs to win here to bring herself back into the bigger picture and boost confidence to win more Slams.

Re: The Tennis Thread

That was a hell of a match. Djoker and Murray busy tiring each other out, taking 2 hours to split 2 sets lmao.

Re: The Tennis Thread

The Nishikori match was really good; some excellent shot making there and for him to win 2 straight 5 setters is impressive, considering his opponents.
Also Serena through in straights, after going 3-0 down in the first, lol. She needs to pull her head out of her ass; against a better player, 3-0 would not have gone unpunished.

This match really looked set to go the distance...and then it just didn't lol.

@GoldB the two back to back 5 setters even more impressive because Nishikori has stamina/endurance issues. I really thought he'd get bullied off the court by stan (like the first set) but not at all. Really big fan of Kei.

To be honest, I really wanted Stan to win. Even before his win at the Australian Open, I've always thought he had unfulfilled potential and could do a lot better than he had done so far. I thought after that Grand Slam win, he'd up his ante and challenge the top guys more frequently but man, Nishikori played brilliantly; like you said I was also shocked at how well he managed and lasted, but to also get the win. Well played.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Stan has technically stepped it up..its funny, his top 10 record was pretty good...but his losses were to players outside the top 10...and some of the losses were bad. He's still too inconsistent (ironically) outside of the majors.
