This thread is about how you envision the DC expedition, the hunters dealing with calamities and the consequences for the human world.
I will put the discussion which was OT in another thread into this one as a starting point:

The thing is, I don't think Adult Gon's strength is on par with Meruem's pre-nuke. Being strong enough to beat Pitou is not the same thing as beating the King of the Ants. It took a nuke to even deal any sort of significant damage to the king (which makes me really curious as to what our characters are going to need to take out the Calamities, if they even can, because Nen sure as hell isn't going to be enough). They may move to a different type of energy system for it. At any rate, Gon is strong at his full potential, but he's not a nuke.

I get what you are saying about Gon having a tremendous amount of physical strength at his full potential, and he does. But he's at least a tier or two lower than Meruem, because of what was written into the story about what was needed to damage the King, let alone killing him.
I am very sure that the calamities, if they will be beat, will be beat by accurate teamwork of many different parties (i think the joint nen efforts, for example of that mecha, are a good indication of what is to come).
If the calamities could be defeated in straight up one on one fights, netero would have been there to fight em in his prime, but he left the DC.
Probably because there is no such thing as fairly physically fighting things like that.
You need to fight more like chrollo: Prepare, execute flawlessly without giving it any chance to come back.

Judging by the photo of him that was displayed when Cheadle was briefing Leorio and Kurapika, Netero was in his prime when in the DC. The calamities are still there.

That might work against something like Hellbell or Pup, but I'm at a loss for how it's supposed to work on a disease which has no known cure. They don't know the method of transmission or how it gets picked up. And there are a *lot* of those in the DC. And remember, our characters don't know the capabilities of the Calamities, so they can't really do any prep work, at least not much beyond gathering a ton of people with a wide range of abilities and hoping someone can counteract what's being thrown around.

That's a losing strategy too, especially when the boat that's getting to the DC has a succession war going on between a bunch of princes. Or, like Beyond's group, is taking only about 25 people max- if any one of them gets taken out, the group loses a fairly large percentage of their capability against the DC.

Kurapika already said he's not going to be much help, given his ability restrictions. Leorio's a newbie at healing, although he has some multi-purpose Nen developed, as Ging displayed when he replicated the warp punch/sonar. Gon's completely nen-inept, right now. Killua has Something, whose power supposedly stems from Pup, so he might be ok if he lands in Pup's territory- but any of the other four and I'd be willing to bet Togashi's not going to let him walk away intact.

Overall, our MC's are in extremely poor shape to be heading out to the DC, even if they have characters like Ging helping out a bit.

Err what's their goal going into the DC anyway? Previous expeditions aimed to bring back something from there, what do the current explorers want out of their expedition?

Hahahahaha... Oh god you're serius...

Eh... No... Just... NO...

Hisoka is strong, but he is someone that Netero didn't even think of as powerful enough to even look a him, even with a murder instinct on and a direct challenge with nothing more than a table between them.

Meruem = or > Adult Gon >> Netero >>>>>>>>>>>> Hisoka
Yes netero did look for a challenge but he didnt find one not because there wasnt anyone strong enough ( ging was there and the top 5 nen users) but because netero is not like hisoka. Hisoka is someone who would challenge a good person and kill him if hes skilled, netero wouldnt do that.

And also its true that netero lost the battle with the king ( he won the war ) but lets remember thats he was over 100 years old.

Leorio states he's going because he wants the challenge associated with the DC. Killua will probably wind up going to the DC because Something's power stemmed from Pup or one of the other calamities, Zzigg Zoldyck seems to have brought back the capability for Something's power to show up. He was one of two other explorers who made it back with Aizack Neterro (the other being Linnet Audoble), you can find the pictures of them in chapter 344 on page 17, right after the explanation of which kingdom of the v5 was gathering what and which calamity took out their forces/people, It's not clear right now exactly why Killua would have reason to go over there, but that seems to be his tie to the DC, as Something's capabilities seem to be mirroring the description given of Pup. Pleasure and life-exchanging beast sounds like she's granting wishes (pleasure) in exchange for taking lives.

Kurapika is attempting to get on the voyage boat to the DC because he wants to get close to Tsseriednich (the 4th prince), who he believes is carrying a pair of the eyes of his brethren. I sort of wish Togashi would have him address the line of thought as to whether or not the prince is arrogant enough to believe he can protect his possessions, both against everyone attempting to kill him and the threats posed by the inhabitants of the DC- if he is, the eyes may be aboard the boat. If not, Kurapika will have hopped on board for nothing, unless he can wiggle their location out of Tserriednich.

Gon knows about where Ging is going, but in his present state even he knows he'd only be a drag on Ging. Right now he really has no reason to even try to go over there, and even he seems to know it. I have a feeling he'll wind up over there at some point, maybe sneaking onto whichever route Killua takes to try to restore his Nen. Is that a dangerous and extremely stupid thing for him to do? Absolutely. It's also very in keeping with Gon's character traits for him to try something like that, what with his ambition overriding his common sense, and it'll give Killua an excuse to play the "wife" role again in yelling at him for it. :D

It looks as though the fight between Chrollo and Hisoka won't go on for much longer, so I did a refresher reading of the manga chapters involving the DC's announcement post-election arc. I have to note that even though the first portion of the journal detailing the DC, East, was written by Don Freecs 300 years ago, nobody has found "West". That seems like it will become a plot element at some point in the arc, because the explorers don't have any idea what's lurking in the western half of the DC (it might even be an indication that there are more than 5 calamities lurking around). The expedition will land in the East, and then if/when the calamities can be overcome, may move West.

That example of the disease is exactly the best example of why netero didnt fight those calamities.
Fighting them is no traditional martial arts fight and, probably, not even simple man vs beast.
If that was the case, it'd probably be easy just to nuke them.

I think a big faction of medical hunters could try to fight zobae with many personal losses while studying it. that would not give it fights, but rather probably chapters in which the disease is studied and then they have to fight certain ingredients to create a cure, and the ingredients are hard to find, too.

I think leorio will be the handiest char on the DC, because he and cheadle can bring in a lot of medical knowledge.

That's the funny thing: We don't know pariston's or beyond goals, but the whole expedition comes to place just because kakin wants glory and a lot of people jump in on the boat.
The other nations and the hunter orga are scared of what they might bring back in their insane attempt and thus move with them to keep them in check.

Uh I mean the individual motives are quite clear. I meant what the formal organization seeks out of the DC. An empire for instance wanted some electricity generating stone, or some longevity herb or w/e, so the entire expedition was organized to do that. Certainly, there had to be people aboard with personal motives, but those motives were at large not the reason the expedition was organized (unless of course that motive had to do with the goal of the expedition).

In terms of Kakin, the nation who became V6, the expedition to the DC isn't just about the succession war- the present King wants the new "King" to prove themselves by overwhelming and taking control of the DC for the kingdom of Kakin. To even enter the succession war, each Prince had to put a drop of their own blood into a jar and then stick their hand inside of it, which gave them all a "spirit beast", which is based in the character attributes of the prince (things like personal viewpoints and mental capacity, etc). It's stated that those with weaker spirit beasts will not be able to survive the war or become King. Beyond is opposing his father's wishes, in addition to looking to escape from underneath imprisonment at the hands of the Hunter association.

Quite frankly, I'm wondering if the present king is simply killing off his current brood and doesn't actually want any of them to succeed him as the king of Kakin.

Neterro's nuke only wiped out the king and his guards due to the radiation, and the Calamities are a class or two above the ants. Nukes are also impractical because it would essentially irradiate and destroy the area, wiping out the reason they were attempting to get stuff from the DC to begin with or the areas they're supposed to be colonizing, and then there's the friendly fire risk (which is as deadly in the DC as anywhere else).

That could be, but Togashi loves to complicate things. Leorio getting infected with Zobae, leaving Kurapika and/or the others to scramble in an attempt to cure him, could make for an interesting plot twist- and it would also very much put the other MC's at a disadvantage they haven't had to overcome before.

Pariston is one of the bigger mysteries in the series so far. We know he made efforts to capture and contain 5,000 chimera ants, though their purpose hasn't been revealed yet. It seems as though he intends to use them as his own soldiers, but then you've got the issue of transporting that many ants back to their native region and keeping them in check once they've arrived.

He's also a sadist and a brilliant strategist when it comes to arranging his moves against Ging. He resents Ging because Ging often thinks along the same lines he does tactically- Pariston says that he enjoys tearing apart and eventually killing what he loves, and that he doesn't know what he should do with Ging because he hates him. Overall, it seems like Togashi was going for a "Joker" vibe with Pariston: Ging remarks that even if Pariston were bleeding from the head, he'd still be laughing from his stomach.

We do not know how the calamities fare compared to the king in terms of stamina.
We know that 'numbers' seems to be an important variable.
It could very well be that brion is easily to be defeated, but grows back one day later, and has insane firepower.
That would explain why its no challenge for netero but a BIG threat for humanity.
The calamities are potentially threats that can destroy the whole human race. I am pretty sure that if they could be dealt with with a nuke, it would be done.
(keep in mind that the rose is only a very small nuke, there are bigger ones in the hunterverse.)

That is true and it is one of my theories that togashi will go into that direction to explore his mains in another way.
Might well be that leorio is the competent one in this arc while the others struggle :p

At least according to ging pariston's only goal is to stir trouble.
I could see pariston thinking along the lines of 'oh well, i will give the whole organization an insane struggle to keep it from going to tame so i can honour netero with that'.
His feelings for netero seemed very genuine, so i think he actually does care about the organization.

Apparently, there is a race of guardians known as the Gatekeepers that are supposedly allowing only select explorers through the Gates into the DC. It could just be me, but I don't think those guys are going to let a Nuke into the DC if they know about it, so it may be that the larger ones have been out of the question. On top of that, you have transport issues and/or several countries getting up in arms if they know Nukes are on the move. They'd probably be expecting and or watching for that, based on the nature of the stuff in the DC.

That is true and it is one of my theories that togashi will go into that direction to explore his mains in another way.

He does seem to have set Leorio up to take on Zobae, while Killua and Alluka will be in Pup's territory. I wonder which threat best fits Kurapika and Gon, though. The gaseous life form Ai is a near total mystery, as are Hellbell and Brion. I suspect one of the Calamities will wind up being stronger than the others, and that it may be guarding passage into the Western part of the continent.

At least according to ging pariston's only goal is to stir trouble.

I don't think Ging would be opposing Pariston solely on that basis, though. He seems to want to protect the Association, it's evident through his talks with Cheadle and the other members involved in going to the DC (it's also because of the way he reacted when the subject of how the offer of money was negatively affecting his potential allies was brought up to him). I haven't figured out why.

It sounded like the V5 folks were planning to have the immigrants settle on some islands, while groups like Beyond's and the Hunter Association were looking to start exploring the territory the second they get off the boat and/or get to the continent itself. I don't know which is the faster route to the DC, but which group gets there first could play a pretty pivotal role in what happens next.

On an off note: One of the theories that Ging had was that Don Freecs hadn't finished writing West yet. Can you imagine the look on Gon's face if he were to meet Don? :)

But what's 'some glory'? For instance, they plan on dropping off most people on an island group on the edge of the known world, and let them think they're in the new world. So their goal isn't to colonize areas of the new world with the people aboard the ship. They do plan on towards the new world however. All things considered, it's fairly obvious that Beyond knows tons of things the Hunters do not, so there's bound to be an ulterior larger motive there.

I am not sure of that.
They want to drop of the glory seekers who do not bring any benefits to the expedition, that is true.
But they might still set up camps and forts with the capable persons on the journey.
They basically have no other choice if they want to survive.
Kakin wants to have at least SOMETHING to bring here. Kakin wouldnt set up a big thing like that for nothing but a throne struggle (its not like the king couldnt let the princes fight it out somewhere else).
I think the king of kakin does not care what they bring. Beyond promised him glory, and he gave him the chance. And since beyond will be hard to contain, the other hunters have to do even more planning work about which items might be somewhat save to hunt for and how to organize it all so that beyond does not bring back a calamity.

Beyond might have a certain target here, but i think kakin would be satisfyed if they just set up some city on the new world, could act like they were the ones brining humanity to a new treshhold and be done with it

I'm actually thinking the same thing about Pariston, specifically because of the ants he amassed. What better way to take on the Dark Continent and the problems it presents than by turning the natives against their fellow species?

I agree, in hindsight, pariston might have built that army solely to tackle the DC.
I have a theory anyways that pariston was the one bringing the queen into the human world.
I could even imagine that he planned for netero to go against the king.

Partison & his supporter are down right evil & devious...it happens Off screen but is heavily hinted on. That Partison & his conspirators (Beyond/Hunter Ass./Kakin)
Brought a calamity back from DC to challenege the late great Netero & Hunter Association...As Morel mentioned the Hunter Ass. wasn't supportive of Netero's campaign against the ants being difficult on purpose; most likely due to the VP Partison who has vast political control in the Hunter Ass.

Then Partison is given control over the 5000 chimera ants. This manipulative move is an bio-weapon deterrent to make sure the Hunter Association & G5 approves of Kakin's voyage unless he will release the ants on the world; Given the Hunter association a huge mess to clean up, while Kakin would still set sail through all the chaos.

I agree that pariston is, all the fun he brings aside, an incredibly dangerous person without any empathy.

But i would even hold it possible that he did what he did out of some kind of twisted love. Bringing the ant queen so she could breed meruem so netero could have his last fight is something i would see pariston doing.
He might not have known exactly how it would play out and he might not have exactly known netero would die, but if he was responsible, he must have forseen netero wanting to fight the king.

I don't think anyone could have know that the king was going to be that strong.
I guess when you say Pariston purposely brought the queen with breeding the almighty king in his mind it feels like some aizen BS... But if it's Just for the troubles it would have caused, I guess that's alright.

People say that gon can't survive on DC because he lost his nen, but the way I see things it's not a problem. I mean sure, nen would make things easier (well a lot easier, in a way), but a lot can be done without it. As has been portrayed, DC is literally harsh environment and fight against nature, a lot of abilities and skills that aren't nen related can come into play.

A little example; it doesn't matter how strong you are, if something like nanika shows up you're done. But someone like gon could be friendly with it and hit it off!

For me what count the most is the ability to survive and bond ( i don't know if its the right word for it? ), become one with nature.
That's why netero lost interest on that place. He was always looking to be the strongest fighters, where he could fight at his absolute limits. There's not such things in that place...unless you want to fight a 500 ft worm...

Actually it has been stated that there are other kinds of humanities over there also

Also, nen isn't just hatsu! Just being able to harness nen increases longevity and in general your survival rate. Being able to bond and become one with nature sounds spicy till you're fighting that worm btw :lmao

You can't know if people knew or didn't know how strong the King was going to be actually. For instance, if they had no clue about the strength of the ants, why would they go as far as implanting a miniature nuke inside the body of the chairman? Certainly they must have known things about the ants before hand, such as their potential power output

Volume 33 defines threat level B (the Ants) as one where the solution is known (and As are the ones where the solution is unknown). Just looking at the definition, it must be the case that the V5 was going to nuke the Ants anyway, but Netero convinced them to let his team give it a shot and he'll take the responsibility for the nuking part if it didn't work. I can't possibly imagine anyone would bring a nuke 'just in case' for something a group of non government backed humans can do (that's by definition level C threat). It must be the agreed method to deal with Ants, which goes to show how absurd it was trying to beat Meruem with just humans in the first place.

Well there will be several fights going on on this journey.
  1. Zodiacs vs Beyond
  2. The Battle Royal between the 15 princes with their bodyguards and nen beasts
  3. Genei Ryodan vs Hisoka
  4. And Hisoka vs the world
I think the Genei Ryodan will be focusing on getting rid of hisoka on the journy to the DC, because there wont be any treasures till the ship heads back to Kakin.

The battle royal might be conclude until we reach the DC.

But I'm really intrigued with hisoka, because he wont just be fighting the ryodan. There is almost his entire Toy Box on one ship. He will be a nuisance to every plan any faction on the trip wants to carry out.
What Mizaistom plans to spy on some beyond members? But Hisoka wants to fight now!
What Hanzou wants to protect momoze? But Hisoka wants to fight now!
What Nobunaga and Kurapica are about to fight? Well, just about to, but Hisoka wants to fight NOW!

I think as soon as Nobunaga knows that Kurapica is on board, he will become the achilles heel of the genei ryodan, because he is the kind of guy who would go alone if he has to just to get revenge. So I assume Chrollo would send at least one other spider with him. If I have to guess he would send either Phinx, Feitan, Bonolenov or Franklin. And I have a strong feeling it will be Franklin, because his ranged abilities would give them an edge against both kurapica and Hisoka, due to Uvo, strongest close combatant of the troup, loosing to Kurapica.

Edit: Oh and if the DC is as harsh as it is said to be, I think we will see at some point some odd alliances.
