Spoiler: bonus

'There's no point in describing our target with such scary language. Pain has never lost a battle.' - Konan

'The sky cries again. Pain… you...' - Konan

'Didn't you just remind me not to underestimate my enemies, Jiraiya-sensei...'

'It's time for you to witness the Six Paths of Pain.'

'We are Pain... we are god!'

'I will bring Pain down upon the world. SHINRA TENSEI!'

'Do you hate me?'

'Sometimes you must hurt in order to know, fall in order to grow, lose in order to gain because life's greatest lessons are learned through pain.'

The only legit, and acceptable leader of Akatsuki.

A past you could sympathize with.

A villain you could root for.

The Rinnegans should have belonged to him.

Him only.

He should have been the endgame of this series.

Not someone submitting to Naruto because… why did he do that again?

Should have taken the first win.

Let him capture Naruto.

Give other characters time to shine.

A rescue mission with the veterans such as Tsunade, Guy, Shikaku.

Add a young pinch of Neji, and the Sand trio into the mix.

Make Akatsuki fully ally with one or two countries.

Create a real world wide conflict.

Endless possibilities.

Nevertheless, he was a great character who also failed to escape some of Kishimoto's awful writing.

Best villain in terms of background and motivation.

Spoiler: compilation

[Jammin]

Ah Nagato.

He didn't make my list because I don't think he really did escape Kishi's writing. Unlike with Garra I wasn't able to buy into the Naruto conversion. Loved him as a villain. Wish he'd stayed that way. As a villain he provided some great moments though.

[Hermit]

Now THIS right here, is the best villain in the series. Hands down. He was such a good villain that majority of the community agree the manga's writing fell off a cliff once he was taken down

[Purity of Magi]

[Demonspeed]

All his talks about "pain" were laughable but he was a great antagonist.

[Aurelius]

Pain(tendo) had the design of an endgame boss, strong backstory, the six paths and the shared monitor were a cool concept, and he fulfilled the hype.

Most importantly he beat Naruto in talk no jutsu, well initially. His speech on the cycle of hatred hit on a real level. He was right about it all in the Shinobi world.

Rinnegan gives u access to all jutsu

I quite liked the VAs used for PAINS, especially Tendo pain aka Yahiko.
The dynamics and moments when jiraiya trained them was really well done flashback too. Quite liked the idea, the 2 students of same sensei , having 2 diff ideals fought for the justification of the same using strength, thus might is right, which ironically was the very contrarian nature madara described of shinobi.

Moreover, the amt of threat he possessed was on quite an unprecedented level, unlike before in naruto. He has some of the best quotes in the series.
Honestly, tht arc was easily among top for me.

[Vici]

[goldb]

I'm really just feeling this carp tattoo. But yes, Pain was cool. Especially during his fight with Jiraiya. That was peak cool.

[Demonspeed]

Rinnegan gives u access to all jutsu

And yet they only used the Six Paths techniques. So many things in Naruto are underused and/or unexplored. A shame.

As a non-native English speaker though. I think it's thanks to him that I learned what pain meant .

[Farfalla]

Love Orochi's design #late&random

[syx]

I still can't explain how you can possibly do this in the anime.

I am not even a Naruto fan. Not a fan of his character. Nor his fighting style. And the animation of that fight was still able to trigger the hell out of me.

That was NARUTO'S FIGHT. It was THAT FIGHT.

[Farfalla]

This is silly but I love how Lee and Guy feel so alike without making me getting a repetitive/tiring of feel from them

I gave many points to Kakashi, but if Shika or Jiraya win I'll have an eyegasm

Shika best genin woof!

Shika best genin woof!

He was the only Genin to be promoted to Chuunin after the Chuunin exam/war against Suna. ; )

Pain being sucked into a plot hole (colourized)

Well I thought that every time he said " Pain " he was introducing himself to characters :P

[Hermit]

I thought the series would reveal at one point that the two were actually related, LOL. Wouldn't have been such a bad twist.
@Farfalla Talking about Lee and Gai here, in case it gets buried under all the other posts
