Come to think of it, even a smaller scale version of Universe One not involving extreme battlefield removal can be deadly, assuming that smaller scale means a smaller margin of error and shorter preparation time. Suppose it is invoked in such a way that the opponent will be sent a few hundred meters or even a few kilometers into the sky, and with that particular area conveniently deprived of oxygen but loaded with the other gases. Then, combined with the usual enchantment, long-range attacks such as fire blasts and lightning strikes can easily be conjured up against the weakened opponent that still has to deal with lack of oxygen and the force of gravity, among other normal environmental factors

The depts of the Occean is worse than that.

—Complete Darkness (Sunlight can't penetrate, thus no sense of direction)

—Crushing psi (like the weight of mountains crushing the internal organs)

—Breathing O²

Now even worse than the Occean still is BFR to space. Since Irene can BFR several hundreds of miles easily, she can BFR to space & let her opponent suffer all sorts of harsh conditions.

The question at this point then becomes, without special powers of friendship, who can survive being transported to a harsh location and come back to fight, assuming Universe One is properly cast?

Zeref is for all intents and purposes immortal, may know how to cast enchantment at that level, and moreover has that time-stopping magic.

August might have an arsenal of spells to aid him depending on how many he has copied and retained, and who knows what other perks he gets by being the child of Mavis and Zeref...

As for the others, maybe Etherious can survive some if not all of the possible hazardous situations...

Everyone, and i mean everyone.
We're talking about people who casually shrug off getting set on fire or struck by lightning, who dont get frostbite when completely encased in ice, who dont die when Meteors are dropped on them, who dont get damaged when the mountain they are standing on gets shattered, who survive falls hundreds of feat high. Even fricken GMG Lucy got tossed a mile away by Zirconis and didnt have a scratch afterwards.

Best Eileen can hope for is to send them to the bottom of the ocean and hope they cant hold there breath long enough to swim to the top, cause the "pressure" is doing nothing to bodies as durable as the ones in this tournament, that includes the fodders already eliminated..

Universe One takes prep time as well. It's not restricted, but Irene wouldn't be able to cast it at the start of the match because then we have to give her prep time advantage over her opponent. She can try to set it up as the battle goes on, but it's unlikely and impractical. It's far easier to just turn into a dragon and claw swipe them.

Fair points about durability. I suppose that means in order for the displacement brought about by Universe One to be deadly, it must be followed up with other enchantments, assuming one doesn't need a break after casting it.

I get the impression though that preparation time and margin of error are proportional to the intended scope, so a smaller-scale application of Universe One wouldn't take that long to set up. The problem though is that we don't know for sure how long it took for Irene to enchant Fiore, and its results apart from the intended target displacement are supposed to be random, even though as we have seen the outcome was way too convenient...

DiMaria winning makes sense when you consider only partial END Natsu and Ultear were able to bypass the freeze. Assuming Wendy and Chelia were able to as well because of Ultear.

The remaining fighters are 3 protagonists and 5 villains. This just proves how Hiro Mashima wasted his potential villains :derp

My favorite characters are Laxus, DiMaria, and Irene, who are still in this tourney. Laxus and DiMaria I can see them losing. When Irene makes it to the semifinal round, I am gonna declare myself as a member of Team Irene.

I'm going with Laxus and August, all the way. Unless someone has a good argument for Zeref

ANd then August in the end.

The Semi-finals that would be the most suspenseful, for me at least, would be:

irene vs Zeref- Irene is stronger than she was shown to be(feat-wise) and that is something the majority of fans have agreed on. Zeref was thought to be untouchable, however, the restriction of his immortality and his poor display of power(even with unlimited MP) have let down a lot of fans. With Zeref-s "strongest black wizard of all time" status being in question now, I see Irene having a huge chance of causing an upset.

August vs Natsu- Because its August vs Natsu.

Zeref and Irene should both be eliminated by now, in my honest opinion. I think they've won too many fights that their feats didn't support in the manga.

For the finals, I'm looking forward to August vs. Natsu.

August would be considered the Challenger and Natsu would be the Former Champion of Last Year's Tournament.

Of course, I think August would win with relative ease, but it would be a great set-up to see how the Champion of Last Year's Tournament matches up to the Final Challenger of This Year's Tournament.

Eileen has some excellent showings, i used to think she was shit too, but looking at it again its clear the only reason she looked as pathetic as she did is cause of PiS, something August suffered from as well.
Breaking Erza's bones with one swipe is one of the best feats in the manga.
Deus Sema, assuming it lands on the battlefield unmolested was hyped to kill everyone.
Enchanting Neinhart to resist a spriggans hax also solidifies her as unimaginably more powerful than the average spriggan, and confirms her as undeniably superior to all except August, even while in human form.

PiS was the only reason Eileen turned into a dragon, PiS was the only reason she turned back into a human after getting sliced by DS magic(despite actually being a dragon) and PiS is the only reason she didnt fly around the battlefield in dragon form nuking everyone.
Her only contender in this tournament is August and the few dragon slayers able to shoot her out of the air(unlikely any of them can do it tbh). In the end like August she was never actually defeated, so we dont even know what it takes to truely put her down.

I don't think PiS is the reason that she underperformed. And actually, almost every character experienced some sort of PiS in this arc. This goes for all the Spriggans and even some of Ishgar's mages.

I don't see why Irene should be counted as a special case, but others are not.

Irene failed terribly in this arc because of her cocky attitude and overconfidence.

She thought Erza and Wendy were going to be easy opponents, so she messed up several times. By the time she realized her mistake, she was already being severely beaten.

At the beginning of the fight, she mocked Erza and boasted how she didn't care about her daughter.

When Erza was destroying the meteor, Irene just stared at Erza's ass in disbelief. She had many chances to end Erza's life, but looked dumbfounded instead because she could not fathom anybody outclassing her.

Same with Wendy. She let her guard down and got owned embarrassingly.

Really, it was all Irene's fault... her feats were simply all hype and talk. When put to the test, her performance was ludicrous.

I may have let it slide if Irene screwed up once.

But she got countered left and right all the way to the end... How am I supposed to defend that BS?

The way I see it, Irene earned her spot quite fairly... she didn't live up to her bragging.

Honestly, if you take out all of Mashima's hype, there's really nothing impressive left... feat-wise...

August is different. He stated that only his mother (Mavis) could defeat him.

And that was the exact way that he went down.

He beat Fairy Tail's mightiest mage, Gildartz.

The only person he faltered against was Mavis.

And considering that he acknowledged and admitted that several chapters in advance, I see no reason to discredit him.

Irene on the other hand, trash-talked from the beginning and was utterly humiliated in the end. It was ridiculous.

Well yeah, but being cocky and overconfident is just another form of PiS, right? Not saying Eileen isnt retarded, but all that retardation came from the bs plot, we've seen how dangerous Eileen can actually be if she actually puts the effort in.
