I'm in the process of cleaning and editing a chapter of Umineko no Naku Koro ni but I'm having a bit of trouble with erasing the Japanese text on certain pages. I know how to use the cloning tool & I can redraw lines fairly well but even that hasn't really helped with these pages. What should I do?

The topmost panel... how do I get the text out? Is it a mixture of using the cloning tool & redrawing lines? Or is there an alternative?

This one is troublesome too, mostly because of the varying tones on the stone.
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. :)

Alright, for the first page.

When you have something like that it's easier to place the text over it and then redraw, that way it cuts the amount of redrawing plus cloning to a minimum. Though you could actually pull off just cloning and redrawing to the best of your ability. Honestly though, after placing the text over it, most people don't even notice and it looks perfect.

The same thing can be said for the second page. Again, you can redraw and clone to the best of your ability, there's no point in creating new gradients because these are tanko scans and everything you see there is original art. There are mixed tones in there, but again just try free-styling if there's some tones covered with text. It's really how all editors do it, we don't know how the art without the text looks. :amuse

Wish you luck.

For page 2, I would isolate the area with text using the polygonal lasso tool and then healing brush.

Easy as that. Rough example in 30 seconds of work (you could do much better with time & precision)

Thank you all for your help! Everyone's tips were really informative and helpful.
For both pages, I ended up using the Healing Brush tool (I never even knew it existed before this thread) and if anyone is curious, [ here ] is a link to the chapter I edited & cleaned.

Once again, thank you AkaruiHotaru, Zoro and bludshock for helping. I really appreciate it. :D
