Not very sure about those white lines between the black spaces but it seems fine to me. Maybe there are some tricks that I don't know of :P I just used Brush.

Here's my second attempt. I read some thing about the burn tool and discovered a new little trick :P And the first one was pretty over-leveled I think.

Overall, this is a really good clean job.

But I noticed a few specks here and there. What you might want to try out is:
- Duplicate the page onto a new layer,
- With that new layer, increase the (Image > Adjustments >) Levels for the black, so that as many non-whites are visible. In this way, you can look for any "dirty" areas and clean them accordingly.

I've done that with your edit (see attachment) and highlighted the key areas in your edit that need work -- excluding the very top of the page.

Otherwise, it's a really nice edit. Fantastic work!

whoa, seeing on how I did back then makes me realize how much I've learned...
I'm working with viscans now :D
