I've been mulling this over for a while now. I predict that Tanegashima Shuuji (Shuuji, as I prefer to call him) is both the U-17 Head Coach and the best player of the U-17 Team.

Shuuji didn't go overseas for a flaky reason, and if he's going to be the No. 2 of the U-17, he's obviously going to have to fly at some point, so from the start, we have a problem.

Now, here's what we do know: The head coach would've returned with the top 20, yet all we've seen are the same three U-17 coaches. There's no reason not to introduce the real coach, especially as in chapter 74, instead of the introduction of the head coach, we end up with the same three U-17 coaches commenting about the true strength of the G10 players.

Now, here's what Shuuji does: Shuuji has yet to play; instead, he spends all of his time observing. When the BJB returns, he stops the BJB from fucking up the HSers.

Shuuji doesn't seem to include himself with the rest of the players. For example, he tells Irie to be careful or he'll have the rug pulled out from under him. Here, the 1st Stringers are talking about themselves needing to be careful so that they don't have rug pulled out from under them by the challengers. Yet, Shuuji's never included in the speech.

I think Shuuji's the best player in the U-17, and the reason that he doesn't hold the No. 1 ranking is that if he were No. 1, he couldn't not go overseas. The difference between the No. 1 not going with the team and the No. 2 not going with the team is that the No. 1 represents the team as a whole as the "strongest player" of the U-17, and without him there, perhaps the players could be disheartened. Your No. 2 singles spot can always change or be filled by someone else, as it's not so critical. We know that Kaji filled Oni's No. 5 spot while Oni was checking out the camp.

We still don't know who, if anyone, filled Shuuji's No. 2 spot as we never saw a replacement.

Right here, the head coach is referenced, but this all happened in an instant. The BJB has just returned from the Mountain Camp and then this declaration occurs: http://www.mangareader.net/new-prince-of-tennis/48/8. Now, it could be that the head coach had expected that the BJB would rise up and destroy the 2nd Court, so he had made that declaration earlier before he left with the top 20, but doesn't it strike you as a bit odd that it's right after Shuuji's welcomed them?

In this page, Kimijima mentions that he'll talk to the coaches about not having a greeting/welcome prepared: http://www.mangareader.net/new-prince-of-tennis/50/4

Later on, http://www.mangareader.net/new-prince-of-tennis/66/4, Byoudouin speaks to the three U-17 coaches as if they're the actual coaches of the U-17 as if there is no head coach with them or anything. Surely if there were a head coach with them, he would've ensured that there would've been some greeting prepared. I mean, surely if there were a head coach, Byoudouin would discuss the challenge thing with him, not with the basic three U-17 coaches.

Cant think why as he has never been referred to as ''Shuuji'' in the storyline yet lol.
But nah, I doubt this. Im dont see a teen being the Head Coach. I dont see Byoudouin being ruled over by another guy his age.

As to that, the tl can make choices of how players refer to each other. Irie calls him Shuu-san, according to Sai's tl. Mouri calls Ochi Tsuki-san, but he could also call him Tsukimitsu-san.

Did you miss what I was getting at? Have you read the whole post? Yes, I understand that you might be against a player coach, but you could evaluate the thread for what's it worth, such as the lack of the appearance of the head coach in the storyline, along with Kimijima and Byoudouin acting as if there isn't a head coach who travels with them.

Frosty, your theory is amazing because everthing you said has made me think how the hell Shuuji knew things like the losers coming back and destroying 2nd court, how he warned Irie, and I would also say that when they defeated No.11 to 20, he didn't shock at all, I bet he knew the MS would win easily.

Precisely haha. Nobody has called Tanegashima ''Shuuji'' or Tokugawa ''Kazuya''. Konomi has his reasons. No HSer has been fully called by their full first name besides Echizen Ryoga, Mitsuya Akuto, Date Danji, Ban Rikiya, Hakamada Izou and Suzuki Shun.

The tl likely translates it how it was actually said. Since the symbols for Tsuki-san and Tsukimitsu-san are different.

Yeah I did.
Tanegashim and Tokugawa were shown together a couple times between the Team Shuffle. So its not like they dont talk.
Tokugawa and Oni were the HSers who were fully aware of the BJB Revolution. Its more than possible that they told Tanegashima and Irie. Since both latters have been shown with Tokugawa.

Indeed they are different, but you can alter things to some degree. Echizen even calls Kazuya Tokugawa-san.

Well, yes, it leads into the whole situation that Shuuji clearly doesn't support Byoudouin, but that's not really part of my explanation for this theory.

Kazuya was even part of the BJB last year, but there are hefty questions left unanswered by Konomi. It's not like I'm giving my theory a massive chance of succeeding, although from the beginning, I've always thought that Shuuji is the true No. 1 of the U-17.

Or maybe the staff quickly phoned the Head Coach who is meeting with other coaches on an international committee or something. Since I cant see why Tanegashima would get rid of 2nd Court completely. That would unbelievably stupid and irresponsible when Courts 4 downwards excluding 6th Court must be weaker than them.
Tanegashima who trains at the camp and sees them everyday would probably have 2nd COurt move down or something.
Also, just as you said, its not like Tanegashima has been seen even talking with the other 1st Stringers lol. I dont think the kid is in charge of the camp.
