Re: Vagabond 280 Discussion / 281 Prediction Thread

It sucks that this is being removed from MH but I understand the licensing issue.
Is there any way we can read 280 online? I'll be surfing the web with my ipod for the next 3 months. Thanks yall.
Mangafox (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/vagabond/v30/c280/) and Onemanga (http://www.onemanga.com/Vagabond/280) are still both hosting Vagabond; probably all the other online readers are, too. Mangafox tends to have better quality than Onemanga, though on an iPod that probably doesn't matter too much ;)

Ittousai finally goes for a strike! I thought the battle may actually be put off but woooh. I've got 5 dollars that Ittousai loses in 2 hits.

Hmm, I guess I should link to an online reader in our release, huh? Fixing...
Edit: fixed, went with Mangahut since, off the top of my head, it's the only one I can think of that doesn't compress (though if you think another one is better, I'm open to suggestions).

Re: Vagabond 280 Discussion / 281 Prediction Thread

can anyone explain to me what Sekishusai is doing? I don't get why he is flying around and hiding in clouds.
He left when Musashi got angry, then he showed himself again when he calmed down.

Easy. Sekishusai's teaching is "you're not a wild beast", which Ittousai is. If Musashi acts or feels more like Sekishusai, then "the ghost" hangs around, when Musashi goes Ittousai's way, the ghost goes further.

On that note, it would be awesome if Musashi grabbed Ittosai's sword and disarmed him barehanded, "no sword" style, as Sekishusai himself did to Gion Toji in volume 7.

if thats the case then why did he say "box seat" when he appeared. doesnt that mean he wants them to fight? his teaching is that you do not have to fight. its the opposite of what he is doing.

The fact he comments on having a "box seat" doesn't necessarily mean he wants them to violently fight. He could be watching for a number of reasons, such as watching to see if Musashi has learned anything, curiosity in how he'll handle the situation, if he can learn to control his blood-thirst, etc.

Ok, so the part where Musashi yelled "I strong, I kill you!" and almost got cut up by Itto really happened or did that just happen inside Musashi's head? Vagabond seems so surreal lately that I have trouble telling the difference between what's real and what's not. And it's a lot less serious too.

No, that didn't happen, it's just what Musashi thought would happen if he ever tried to rush out his own circle. With his crippled leg he has no balance when running and holding a sword. An experienced swordsman like Ittosai wouldn't need long to take care of Musashi in that case.

Re: Vagabond 280 Discussion / 281 Prediction Thread

The way I understood it, 柳生石舟斎平宗厳(Yagyū Sekishūsai Taira-no-Munetoshi) said “box seat” because it was a joke, well sort of. Whether you noticed or not, Musashi is quite famous now in the current Vagabond universe. To many, he is already “Unrivaled under the Heavens”. And of course, 伊東一刀斎(Itō Ittōsai) already is a “Sword Saint” before Takezo’s time. So, watching two of the greatest warrior ever lived to cross swords, it is a privilege. I think as a spirit, 石舟斎 was able to view them up-close, like sitting in a “Box Seat” watching a boxing match, it’s quite an enjoyment.

一刀斎will not lose in 2 hits, at least I don’t think he would, well maybe more than 2 hits. Did you notice his freaking right arm? It’s either an illusion, or he did not lose that arm. Towards the end of the chapter, as he is charging towards Musashi, you can see him drawing the blade using his right hand. It’s either Musashi is hallucinating, or 一刀斎did not lose his arm, or maybe there’s something wrong with my eyes.

Musashi will also not be disarming Ittōsai barehanded. That is the ultimate technique from the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū. But yeah I agree it would be nice to see if Musashi can reach that level someday, I think he can, because as we can see, he is struggling to choose his path. Sekishūsai’s path is very spiritual and it shows in his training and understanding of the Way. Ittōsai’s path is very self-centered, and his fighting style shows it, it’s all about stronger techniques, no spiritual learning mixed in at all.

The part where Musashi gets cut down by Ittōsai was in his head. It can be confusing because it is a real scenario. That is what would have happened if Musashi continued to be affected by Ittōsai. Musashi was falling into Ittōsai’s trap, he is being taunted by him, and losing his calmness and the ability to make a clear judgment. All part of Ittōsai’s strategy, a good strategy in my opinion, to defeat Takezo. But Takezo sort of snaps out of it by re-opening his leg wound, the pain caused him to briefly regain focus and clarity.

My prediction for 一刀斎 is sort of based on historical records and rumors, so they may not apply in Vagabond. But, historically, 一刀斎did sort of disappeared all of a sudden after小野 次郎右衛門 忠明(Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki) or more famously known as 神子上典膳(Mikogami Tenzen), the second pupil of Ittōsai, became the successor of the Ittō-ryū. Tadaaki was then appointed to serve the Tokugawa; however, it is widely rumored amongst the Japanese scholars that there is a huge conspiracy behind the school of Ittō-ryū. It is said that Ittōsai had two students, one of them is Tadaaki, his second pupil and the first would be Zenki. To determine who will be promoted to the Tokugawa, Tadaaki and Zenki had to duel to the death. Of course, if we follow the Japanese oral tradition, Tadaaki out skilled Zenki and became the successor of the Ittō-ryū school. He became one of the two official sword masters for the Tokugawa Shoguns other than Yagyū Munenori. It is rumored that after Tadaaki won, he came to the Tokugawa with Ittōsai’s sword, a symbol of approval from Ittōsai, Tadaaki explained. Ittōsai was nowhere to be found, Tadaaki claimed that he is too old and he retired into the mountains. It became a conspiracy when scholars researched into the past of Tadaaki and Zenki. According to history, Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki belonged to a wealthy Samurai family. Young Tadaaki was a promising student; he was very well educated and trained under his own family martial arts. However, according to Tadaaki, he had lots of real combat experiences through Musha Shugyō. This is where it bothers some scholars, because according to historical records, Tadaaki did not have any real combat experience other than training with wooden swords in his family dojo. And as wealthy as Tadaaki’s family, he must have had many duties to attend to on a daily basis, it doesn’t justify the claims he made about many years of Musha Shugyo. Zenki, on the other hand, did have many real combat experiences according to the scholars. He was a true vagabond, and according to how Zenki was historically described, his physique is much bigger to that of Tadaaki’s.

It was rumored that Ittōsai did not like Zenki. From Ittōsai’s view, Zenki was a somewhat of a ruthless beast when it comes to combat. Ittōsai did not like the savageness in Zenki, he preferred the educated/refined Tadaaki. Some scholars think that Ittōsai did send Tadaaki to kill Zenki, however, Zenki turned out to be the stronger one with more real combat experience and stronger body physique. So it is speculated that Zenki killed Tadaaki during the duel, for revenge, he went after the old/incapable Ittōsai to finished him off. He then took on the name of Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki, grabbed the sword from the dead Ittōsai then took off to become the Sword Master of the Tokugawa Shogun.

This is of course, all Japanese history conspiracy theories and such, so they may not be valid or true at all. But it’s interesting enough to read and understand why some modern scholars think this way. First they were curious why Ittōsai did not show up in person to promote his favorite pupil Tadaaki. Instead, he had his favorite pupil show up with his sword in hand explaining why Ittōsai isn’t here. The reasons would be he is too old and had to retire into the mountains, but as a symbol of Tadaaki becoming the successor of Ittō-ryū, he gave him his sword. Second, they wondered why Tadaaki trained with wooden sword in dojo for all his life, makes crazy claims such as having years of Musha Shugyo experiences. Third would be the name change, some did not understand why Tadaaki changed his name; he was first known as神子上 典膳 (Mikogami Tenzen), and then changed his name to小野 次郎右衛門 忠明 (Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki). Fourth would be the odd behavior Tadaaki shows in front of the Shogun. It is said that if compared swordsmanship levels between the two, Tadaaki was stronger than Munenori, but the Shogun favored Munenori better. It was said that Tadaaki later on, as the Shogun’s instructor, would often argue with Shogun’s staff. He was viewed as extremely arrogant and egotistic, at one point he defied direct orders from the Shogun himself. Now with Tadaaki’s supposedly highly educated background, why would he act this way? He doesn’t really fit his own image so to speak, but did act a lot like a ruthless, un-educated Zenki. Also, according to actual Japanese history, Itō Ittōsai never for once makes a personal statement saying that his style of fighting is called Ittō-ryū. It was Tadaaki who claimed that his style of fighting, derived from his master’s Ittō-ryū, shall now be called小野派一刀流 (Ono-ha Ittō-ryū).

Oh my, I’ve strayed off too much from main topic. Well, I think Ittōsai will lose. That is my prediction, because of what was said in Chapter 252, page 11 (http://www.onemanga.com/Vagabond/252/11/). Musashi was imprisoned in the Nijō Castle, and during a conversation between the Shoshidai of Kyōto and Koetsu, the Shoshidai said: “Most of the 70 had been cut down by a single stroke of his sword. Even the Shogun’s instructors, Yagyuu (he’s talking about Munenori) and Ono (this is Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki) wouldn’t be capable of doing that.” So, we can all assume that the current Miyamoto Musashi is already stronger than Munenori and Tadaaki. Now thinking on this path, if Tadaaki was Ittōsai’s pupil and Ittōsai referred him to the Shogun, then at least Tadaaki should be just as good as Ittōsai. But according to the Shoshidai, not even Ono (Tadaaki) can do what Musashi did, so I think Ittōsai (who can be compared to Tadaaki) might lose.

Too long of a post, but just my 2 cents.

What a pleasure to read such an entertaining and informative post :amuse
Well, since Vagabond is an adaptation of the Musashi novel, the victor should be the same as in the book which I haven't read. Or wasn't this episode featured in the novel?

Re: Vagabond 280 Discussion / 281 Prediction Thread

Yeah, unfortunately, this episode was not featured in the original novel. Or was it a real historical incident. It is Inoue's (artist) take on the story. But this is what makes Vagabond so special.

A lot of people are already familiar with the story of Musashi, from the great Eiji Yoshikawa. But Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond deviates from the original Musashi novel, in a good way.

It's rather easy to compare/contrast the work between two great artists, but the real difficulty would be to explain what really happened historically. Whether if you read Eiji Yoshikawa's novel, or Takehiko's Vagabond, both stories are fiction loosely based on recorded/documented events in the Japanese history. You'd have to research actual historical records for what really happened. It's really interesting, because what happened in history is really different from the books. I guess it gives you a different view of these fictional stories if you know the actual historical events.

I've read fascinating things about Takezo, good and bad. Believe it or not, but not all Japanese people consider Musashi to be the greatest. Some say that Musashi is very smart, because he would only challenge/fight 2nd to 3rd rate swordsman. It is said that he would only fight in duels which he is certain 10/10 times, he would win. Which means, Takezo will only duel if he knows he will win, if somehow he is unsure about winning, he will not fight. Which makes it seem like he claims to be the best but will only fight the worst to prove it.

Some say that Takezo, and his father Shinmen Munisai conspired against Sasaki Kojiro together. According to actual historical records, Sasaki Kojiro was the chief weapon master of 細川忠興 (Hosokawa Tadaoki) and that he had many disciples. Some believed that Sasaki's clan had became somewhat of a political obstacle to Hosokawa Tadaoki. Imagine what would happen, say if you were working for a King but has more followers than the King himself. So, it is speculated that Musashi and his father Munisai conspired along with Hosokawa Tadaoki to get rid of Sasaki Kojiro and his followers. It's two birds with one stone really, Musashi would gain publicity as the "Unrivaled under the Heavens" and Hosokawa Tadaoki gets rid of the clan that is strong enough to oppose him. It is said that the whole Ganryu Island was a setup, Musashi did defeat Kojiro but he did not deal the death blow. It is widely speculated that either Musashi's followers or people working for Hosokawa Tadaoki finished the job.

Re: Vagabond 280 Discussion / 281 Prediction Thread

Very interesting reads, though I knew a large part of it already (the part about Itto being very new to me) .

A few points :
- Yes, Musashi was probably not the strongest, at least not the strongest ever. One reason is that in his time duels were often lethal, whereas 50 years later or so people would duel with shinaii's and armours (sort of modern kendo like) and thus would be able to learn from their defeats and go further on the way of the sword.
The other one is indeed that Musashi would rarely fight against first choice swordsmen. He even mentioned it in his book I think. "One inch mis-appreciation on the mikiri ("sense of the fight" or judging in one instant if the person is stronger than you or not), and you're dead."

- About the Ganryu island, I've read everything and its opposite. One was that Musashi even lost to Kojiro. Others were that he used the tides to escape on time because of the number of Kojiro followers who would surround him if he would win the fight (which happened).

- Vagabond doesn't really aim toward real facts, it's much more like the novel it's based on, even more romanticised.

- The Yoshioka thing : it's unsure who fought who. The Yoshioka records don't have anything about their master being defeated by anyone named Shinmen. There are different versions. Either Munisai (Takezo's father) defeated Kenpo, either he got defeated, a few years before Musashi came to Kyoto. But there sure was a grudge between both families. When he fought Seijuro (either his first either his second fight after defeating Kenpo), Musashi kept hitting him even once he had fallen on the ground. And it was a proper duel, not a sneaky thing at night in a field. Then he fought Denshichiro who had a stiff with sharp disks on it (supposedly to hurt Musashi more, but he didn't touch him...). Then a third (fourth ?) fight against a third brother or uncle (Matashichiro ? I'm not sure), and eventually the last fight against the dojo, when he killed the young heir (either Seijuro or Matashichiro's son) and a couple of swordsmen, and injured as many others before fleeing.

Just finished reading 281... wow.. turns out my predictions were wrong. Our Mushishi got PWN'ed.. (; _ ;). There's no translation yet so I have no idea what's being said. But it seems like Takezo got knocked out in the most pathetic way imaginable. Chinese call this "秒殺", meaning "Dead in one second". It's a boring fight... apparently, as a "Strategist" Itto was still greater. His tactic of making Musashi gets all angry and losing cool worked perfectly. Even though Musashi regained focus for the last second, it was already too late, Itto already launched the attack. You gotta give Mushishi a little props though, he did leave a scar on Itto haha...

Itto's right arm is still there, but 3 of his fingers are gone. The wound seems like it's from some sort of burn or gun fire, though I am 100% not sure what could of caused that type of damage, because it just doesn't look like a sword slash wound to me, I could be wrong.

One thing I thought was reallly realllly realllllly cool was... I think.. well I can't read Japanese so I am guessing this part. After Itto K.O.'s Takezo, he asks the inn keep for a bottle of Sake to rinse his wound. After he uses it, he takes Musashi's sword, slices the wood structure of the house, leaving a huge scar on the wood. I think he turns around and said something like, "Here's the payment for the Sake." Ok, I think he said that, again I don't read Japanese so I am not certain. But if he did say that, that is sooo fuckin' cool lol.

Holy cow :)

I wasn't expecting this at all.
I thought Musashi was going to show some skill there. But In the end, Ittosai is more experienced and Musashi still suffers from his injury.
He didn't fight any strong opponent after the injury... This fight shows the impact of the injury on his performance.

Way to go Ittosai.
His arm is there but He lost some fingers :/ maybe because of the infinite amount of fights he had in the past.

Re: Vagabond 280 Discussion / 281 Prediction Thread

Great chapter indeed. I didn't have the impression Itto has missing fingers, I just thought he kept his hand (well his fingers) in his pocket, because his hand got useless due to some disease that makes his veins look big.
Probably I didn't look properly.
Now that I'm thinking of it : when the Yoshioka caught Mat'hachi (the fake Kojiro) they said to Ueda they punished him by cutting his right thumb so that he wouldn't be able to wield a sword any more. Is there any possibility the same happened to Itto ?

Also (I don't read Japanese either), I though he simply tried Musashi's short sword and said something like "it's not sharp enough to kill anyone, I might be dead otherwise, Musashi can keep the sword".

I guess that once Musashi has woken up we'll have an ark about Kojiro at his master, right ?

I think it's very probable. It's Itto's right hand, and I think he was right-handed.
So the wriggly thing was Musashi's imagination, but the old man from this chapter is a real ghost. It's in line with the japanese belief that ghosts don't have legs :D
And all the wisdom that the real Sekishusai has to pass on is.. 'smile more'! :D

Well that cleared up all the confusion. He isnt missing an arm but he is missing 3 fingers. I dont know how he was able to weild a sword but that just shows how much of a monster he is. He still have enough strength in his 2 fingers to fend off Musashi's attacks.

Probably, but Inoue has taken another break. I hope it's not to play Idolmaster.
