Re: 221 discussion [Vagabond]

Musashi is going to fight, and if I remember correctly he kills all the Yoshioka too. It's been awhile since I read the book by Eiji Yoshikawa, but there will be a nice battle where we get to see more of Musashi's dual sword play. I can't wait!!!

~zindryr: edited for possible spoilers.

Re: 221 discussion [Vagabond]

I don't believe that Inoue follows the book exactly. Sometimes he goes off on his own tangents. For example, I don't think Musashi loses the first bout against Inshun or the Yoshioka like he did at the beginning of the series. I may be wrong on this, but it seems that most of Musashi's history is based on the writing of Eiji Yoshikawa.

But anyway, if Inoue does follow the book exactly don't spoil it for us who haven't read the book. I would read the book myself, but I'd rather read Inoue's manga of the story.

Re: 222 Discussion [Vagabond]

This was a great chapter. I can actually relate to this, because I have lost relationships and friends because of personal successes and jealousy. I think Inoue did a great job with this chapter and moving the story along.

Matahachi's a bastard, and I know he never slept with Otsu. Saying bullshit like that to try and redeem himself. What a pathetic human being.

Matahachi IS a bastard. He was lucky to just leave with a second black eye. I like how Takehiko is bringing the relationships of the main characters back together. I can't wait to see how Musashi will interact with Otsu whenever they get the chance to meet again. And the fight with the 70 Yoshioka... ooooo... that's gonna kick ass.

Re: 222 Discussion [Vagabond]

Edited Manga is done. All rejoice. Click.

I really liked this chapter. This should have been the last chapter actually (221 was filler). Loved Matahachi getting punched, that sleaze ball.

The fight with the 70 Yoshioka, ain't gonna happen. Cause Musashi would die, he's not Naruto (Musashi rasengan :tem). Inoue seems to have deviated from the novel at this point. So I'm curious about what's gonna happen as well.

Kojiro especially is totally different from the novel. Inoue seems to be building his rivalry with Musashi via Matahachi. I guess we'll see.

Re: 222 Discussion [Vagabond]

Yeah, we're not gonna see the 70 v. 1 battle. Musashi's good, but not that good. He's either going to hop out of the tree and fight the Yoshioka on the ground, or he's going to wait until they leave and just quietly sneak out of the city.

Since I'm guessing that the fight versus Kojiro is going to be what ends the whole manga, I'm curious as to where Musashi heads after dealing with the Yoshioka. I think Inoue's long overdue for a change in pace from Kyoto. What is this, like the fifth volume chronicling this particular saga?

I haven't read the novel, and don't really plan to, but I'm glad Inoue's deviated from the events of the book - it makes the story harder to spoil.

I agree, it's a bit too long. And there's not much meat in them either. Too many "contemplative" panels. I get it, Musashi ponders his life and his path. But do I really need to see it a thousand times?

But it seems to be Inoue's style. How long was that fight against Inshun? Two volumes, I think. For one fight.

Musashi is leaving Kyoto, I'm sure. He's gonna get on the path to becoming the "sword saint". With some hiccups on the road, I'm sure.

I'm missing the excitement and the action in the Kojiro arc. Stuff happened fast. Now we're kinda lingering and not much is changing in Musashi.

I wonder how many volumes Inoue plans to write. At the pace he's going, he's gonna need another 25 to get to Ganryujima. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. Chances are he'll die before me, so I'll see the end of it.

Re: 222 Discussion [Vagabond]

The Musashi vs. the Yoshioka fight is going to happen. Musashi IS that good. He isn't however, going to fight them where they plan to fight him. Or he'll make an appearance there and lead them into a better place for him to take them on. It will probably be a long fight with Musashi constantly running turning and killing a few, then running some more. Repeat that until all the Yoshioka are dead. It's possible, and Musashi could do it.

What better way to vault him up to "sword saint" than destroying the entire Yoshioka dojo in a single fight?

I'm actually hoping that Inoue goes back to the style he used with the first battle between Musashi and Inshun. It was an extremely technical fight and very fun to follow. I didn't mind reading it, even though it spanned about a volume. Musashi v. Shishido Baiken looked like it had the potential to be a really fun fight to watch, but Inoue up and ruined it by deciding to make the whole thing consist of flashbacks and whatnot. I'm hoping Inoue starts making the fights more physical rather than spiritual.

It will probably be a long fight with Musashi constantly running turning and killing a few, then running some more.
I'd agree with you if these were peasants and conscript samurai like the ones Musashi was killing back in the beginning volumes, however these guys aren't as simple, and they're going to be able to scheme Musashi. 70 v. 1 in a confined area like the city of Kyoto seems like it'd make it pretty easy for the Yoshioka to utilize their advantage in numbers and surround Musashi.

What better way to vault him up to "sword saint" than destroying the entire Yoshioka dojo in a single fight?
I doubt that Inoue is going to have Musashi reach the level of "sword saint" so soon and in such a violent manner. Sekishusai and In'ei, both saints in their own right, always speak of attaining enlightenment in a much more serene way. I expect Musashi's enlightenment to come in the same manner.

Re: 222 Discussion [Vagabond]

Musashi ISN'T serene though. Musashi is not who they are, or were. He started this whole thing as a violent thug, and by all rights he still is one, even if he has tamed a bit lately. I also think that the streets of Kyoto would be the perfect place for Musashi. He may get surrounded, but with his two sword style it wouldn't take much to make a small hole to get out of and keep up the chase. The Yoshioka wouldn't have any other option than to chase him, or call it off entirely.

That, and the Yoshioka probably will not give up so easily.

You can argue that both In'ei and Sekishusai were just as violent until they were tamed by Ise no Kami, who was a Kengo. Ito Ittosai is still as brutish as Musashi and Kojiro, and he's in his fifties by now. You'll notice a trend amongst all of the superlative fighters in the story in that they're naturally extremely violent. The only ones who are serene are In'ei, Sekishusai, and Ise no Kami. All three of them are enlightened.

Besides, he's already gone through the whole "get surrounded by an entire clan and bash your way out" when he busted into the Yagyu, who are arguably much stronger than the Yoshioka anyway. Inoue seems to confine personal growth within the characters in more intimate settings like one-on-one battles rather than the whole "fight for your life" coming of age routine that Musashi and Kojiro went through in the aftermath at Sekigahara.

The Yoshioka style of fighting still exists to this day, so I doubt that Inoue is going to have Musashi kill off the entirety of the Yoshioka anyway.

Re: 222 Discussion [Vagabond]

Well, I can't wait to see them fight. Because I'm sure they will fight. He may not fight or kill all of the Yoshioka, but hopefully he definitely busts out some twin sword style butt kicking. Maybe Inoue will have Musashi kill them all, but then again all he really needs to do is kill Ueda Ryohei and the rest would easily crumble. Most of the Yoshioka are so whupped on their masters that if anything happened to their master they would break down like sissies and fall prey to Musashi's sword. Just look at those guys that beat up Matahachi.

Re: 223 Discussion [Vagabond]

He fought the top 5 of the Yagyu and survived. Even almost won. I'm betting he'll kill at least half of the 7. Next week is definatly gonna be an amazing chapter.

Great chapter showed some of Musashi's most inner thoughts and the climax was just fantastic. Can't wait for next weeks battle.
