Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Out of curiosity, how are Gintama's sales from 2010 when the anime ended to now? I'd like to see if it's risen or dropped in comparison to Reborn.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

@Bianchi:
What you said can be said about TONS of mangas, i.e. Prince of Tennis is known for being a fan-favorite for female readers and that didn't stopped it from being cancelled/ended. *Although it did continue on JUMP SQ*
In fact each generation has its fujoshi manga: Captain Tsubasa, Saint Seiya, to a certain extenct Jojo adopted a homo-erotic tone too, Yu Yu Hakusho, SLAM DUNK, Hoshin Engi, Prince of Tennis, and most mangas of now include at least one bitchy
Also Bianchi, with 40 or so volumes (I don't know the exact count) REBORN! already has more material than 90% or so of the mangas published, already plenty of story.
I am sure REBORN! won't be cancelled per see, but IMO its ending seems likely in the near future, but not a cancellation at all, an as you say it has a very stable fan-base, I'm sure if Amano would like to continue REBORN in any other magazine in the event it is cancelled/ends it will be given the OK.
I am not trying to be negative, I liked REBORN! for the first 4 or so volumes, before its shift to battle manga.. But everything has a peak in popularity REBORN! reached its peak 3 or so years ago, its anime has ended, its tank sales have lower a lot and the arcs haven't been too hot.
Also other thing it has against itself is that it doesn't appeal to other markets, I have heard that both Spain and USA have been having troubles with REBORN's license (AKA low sales), this is just an extra factor, take it just as that.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Nice to see that Gintama hasn't dropped too much, even with the anime being off the air for a year. At this point I don't see it gaining more fans, but its stabilization indicates for the most part that it is going to continue to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

The most surprising thing is Reborn even dropped lower than D.Gray-man. D.Gray-man took many break, its anime ended, and it even move to monthly, so I thought its tank sales would drop more; on the other hand, Reborn going to stay solid because it keeps continue in weekly. However in reality, D.Gray-man didn't dropped that much and Reborn dropped pretty big.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Ruggia thanks for the post, to tell the truth I am basing my posts on my previous experience with mangas similar to REBORN!
I.e. Saint Seiya and Prince of Tennis, both appealing to fujoshi, anime,movies, etc. Then anime adaptation ends manga still being published OVAs announced -although Hades OVAs were supposed to come in production 1990s or so they were cancelled- and then manga cancelled/ending, you can see the parallel.
But actually when it comes to data like that I AM A COMPLETE NOOB, Would you be so kind as to provide me of a web with data of tank sales? (Not only of REBORN, I'd like to check other titles as well :D)
As for GinTama (And any other manga) I ALWAYS wondered how certain volumes (I.e. ONE PIECE volume 23 IIRC or SLAM DUNK volume 20 IIRC) break records, I mean I think if I bought volume 23 I would buy 24.. Seems like certain Japanese DO buy their favorite tanks, I mean I would understand that for a comedy manga but ONE PIECE?
And now for the actual GinTama sales, there is a decline yeah, but I think it also has to do with the fact that volume 26 had been on sale more than volume 27 and this more than 28 and so on. So in my eyes its not really a decline, more like the other volumes had been more time on stores so they had sold more and eventually the newest volumes would be bought by the consumers.
Although it kinda shows a slow but steady decline in overall sales.
I don't know if I explained myself correctly, is really logical, the volume that has been longest on store SHOULD be the one that sells more (Unless by some chance somethign extremelly peculiar happens.. Dunno a very, very special chapter or something like that could happen)

---------- Post added at 11:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:50 PM ----------

@Negative Syndicate:

I saw on comipress D-Gray had sold like 600,000 since its 7th volume, that's crazy! Just imagine if D-Gray had stayed on WSJ..
Personally I never got into it, I liked the first 4 or so volumes, I really liked Lenalee's design too (Especially how she looks on the cover of volume ..4 was it?) then.. Her hair!! (ENDS RANT)
Anyhow.. Maybe in the future a 26 episode anime could be made, its an already succesful series after all..
After Aoi No Exorcist its SQ biggest seller, isn't it?

Also IMO Gintama could very well be the next Kochikame.

Yes, D.Gray-man is currently second highest selling series in SQ. However, I wonder if Shin Prince of Tennis can take that place by boost from its anime.

I disagree. If you mean popularity wise, no way. I love Gintama, but it will never EVER be what Kochi kame is. If you mean length wise, that too is a negatory. Gintama's got maybe a year or two left before it ends. Recent events in the manga seem to indicate that Sorachi's ready to start wrapping things up.

@perroloco - Lenalee's hair is long again. But we are at volume 22, a long way to catch up and... you have to survive chapter 187 and the Kanda arc. :XD

Ao no Exorcist had a real boost from anime. It used to sell around 80k and after the anime, all volumes passed the 700k barrier. Amazing.
I hope D.Gray-man gets another season or a reboot. I would love to see chapter 187 animated. :luv

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I have a huge collection (800 volumes+) of the Shounen Jump Japanese Tankobon that I decided to go through and find out the amount of printings the volumes have had.

This does not directly represent how well a series sells, and most of these numbers are most likely not the current ones, as these were purchased sometime from 2010 December – 2011 March.

For example my Vol.1 of Muhyo to Roji is only on its 3rd printing, even though Vol.2 is on 14th so I somehow purchased an extremely old copy from my Kinokuniya >.>

You can find a huge list of all the series in the spoiler.

New Komi Naoshi series... at long last. I'm kinda feeling an Ashirogi Muto scenario here, though, where he tries a romance/comedy series while his true forte is fantasy adventure; but I may be wrong. Despite my general misgivings, I did quite enjoy the one-shot.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

With Enigma now over 2010 has officially became the worst year in Weekly Shounen Jump History.

I went back and looked at the length of every new series that began in Shounen Jump from 1968 until now and never has their been a year with their longest series as short as Enigma.

This could be kind of positive for Enigma, Busou Renkin that began in 2003 was cancelled as the longest running series of its year and was later giving a Anime.

Maybe Enigma might get a Anime to cover up how bad a year it was?

well... this is very painful. I enjoy Enigma a lot and have high hopes for its future... *sigh* ;__;
I hope Sakaki-sensei comes back with better series (and better luck too).

...now i know how Psyren's fans felt. Except they were put on edge much longer.

I don't think so. Busou Renkin did last longer and has more popularity than Enigma. So, I don't think Enigma will be popular enough to get an anime.

So is there still a 2010 manga that wasn't cancelled yet? Other than Stars?

No there's not, Enigma is the last. And ST&RS is 2011, btw.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I;m really sad to see Enigma go. It had a lot of potential, even if it was clear that she was rushing the second act a lot. I really hope she learns from the experience and comes back with a new series in the future.

Overall I guess 2010 really was a failure for JUMP. Though I imagine it will make the next year or two rather awkward as far as JUMP anime adaptions go considering Magico seems and possibly Harisgawa are the only things that may surivive long enough to get animated...we may end up getting rushed adaptions again if JUMP is desperate enough. Either that or they may just dust off something.

It is too early to consider Magico and Harisugawa to get since they didn't even reached one year yet. I think there going to be at least one year blank for anime adaptation from now on, unless they decide to reboot, start second season, or animate the old ones.
