No you're right but Naruto didn't take off until the anime. Shonen Jump USA was dominated by Dragonball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh! before then.

Maybe the Wii just added to the hardware base with it's massive sells in the west. :p
You just sell more units multiplatform, even if it's a successor console.
that would explain, why the eur/usa has risen, but not that the japanese fallen. your argument with the hardware basis is invalid, because twilight princess was one of the firsttitlesfor the wii, at the beginning of the wii life circle in oppisit to the gamecube, which had sold more units at the time wind waker was released.

your 4kids argument may be true for usa, but not for eur. one piece is uncut shown, but not naruto. blood is cutted out and sometimes the swords. not sure for france, but it was so in germany.

i have a second suggestion, the world the story takes place. if you think about manga/animes, you think about japan and ninjas, not about pirates. it like eating in a chinese restaurant, you expect asian people to work there. not sure how the psychologic word for these is, but it's naturally for humans.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I think it may sound simple but its obvious partially: in the West, Japanese things are just more exotic and interesting. That pretty much explains Naruto and Bleach (and stuff like Kenshin) in a nutshell. OP is incredible but it's so weird and so universal that many just don't see it as "cool" on the surface if they have no imagination.

BTW: considering we're quite into the 2012 issues now and in the new year, are we going to get a new thread?

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Here is an example of why I think BLEACH has been falling in popularity (Apart from the obvious like selling way less in Japan and dropping in the TOC and less presence on WSJ covers)
You know that each of 3 out of the 5 latest volumes sold over an average of 660,000+ right? Vol.52 sold almost 575,000 copies and the latest volume (Vol.53) has already sold over 500,000+ . Surprisingly the first volume of the all hated Fullbring arc (Vol.49) sold almost 715,00 copies. I will also point out that since it was ranked second in the comic rankings in the first/second week of december Vol.53 has sold another 100,000+ copies. Selling way less in Japan? I don't think so. Bleach will always sell it matter "unpopular" people think its getting.

Naruto, ONE PIECE and BLEACH, Bakuman and Ao no Exorcist were published last month in USA.
Naruto got 1st unsurprisingly, 2nd BLEACH, 3rd ONE PIECe, 4th Bakuman and 5th Ao no Exorcist.
Next week Naruto got 2nd place (20th Century boys volume got 1st place this week)
Following week Naruto got 2nd place again (Full Metal Alchemist got 1st place this week) surprisingly 20th Century Boys dropped completely out of top 10 but ONE PIECE got 10th place.
Did you check last week. One Piece wasn't even ranked in the top 10. Though Naruto did take the top spot.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Since the end of the Deicide arc Bleach's sales per volume have fallen fairly dramatically. Sales have not been in free fall, the decline did level off and volume sales are still very good. But there was a very clear decline, when coupled with Bleach's TOC position yo-yo'ing a little more than it used, it is perfectly reasonable to presume that Bleach's popularity has declined a little. Not enough that anyone could make an even semi-reasonable case that Bleach is in danger. But clearly Bleach is not as popular in Japan now as it was before Aizen was defeated.

As of November 2011 when Oricon reported the 50 bestselling manga of 2011, the best selling volume of Bleach was #48 with 845,791 copies shipped. Volume 49 shipped 714,990 copies, a decline of 130,801 copies, a loss of 15% of volume 48's sales. Volume 58 was the lowest seller of 2011 with 574,504 copies shipped, a loss of 140,486 copies from volume 49, a loss of 19%. Sales have steadied since volume 52 with recent volumes selling within the same range, about 600,000 copies per volume. What we can see is that sales dropped most dramatically from volume 48 to volume 49. Between volume 48 and 52 sales declined by 271,287 copies. Volume 49 represents the most dramatic decline in sales, 130,801 copies or 48% of the sales lost since the deicide arc ended. The remaining 140,486 copies were spread out over three volumes, 50 - 52, before sales leveled off and the decline ended. Clearly volume 49 represents the point where the decline in popularity was most dramatic, while volume 52 and 53 (which fell out of the top 50 before reaching 600,000 copies) represent an end to the decline but not a recovery of lost sales.

Volume 59 of One Piece came out on December. Nothing lasts on the NY Times top 10 for over a month except maybe Naruto or Sailor Moon. One Piece 59 and Bleach 37 chart debut was the same week, the week ending on December 25. Both fell out of the charts a week later, though One Piece returned the week after that. Bleach did not. One Piece charted for two non-consecutive weeks while Bleach only charted one week.

I've never heard of a TOC being posted on Sunday. Are you sure that isn't fake/misinformed?

The toc and spoiler for naruto are there at 2ch.
I know people mentioned the fact that T has been using another tripcode in the last 3-4 months.
It is strange. But it wouldn't be the first time that spoiler providers have some problem to log their accounts at 2ch and 69ruma was never able to use his tripcode at naruto thread.

I won't tell you i'm 100% sure. But it does feel strange. But i also remember that T writes "TEST" sometimes when he posts at Naruto thread.

When I checked a reaction from 2ch, people are saying that it is a fake; I think it is kind of too early.

Plus, if it was true, then that ToC also have uploaded in Jump thread in 2ch, but no one uploads or talks about it; so, I'm currently skeptical about that ToC.

That looks incredibly fake. Toriko doesn't have a colour page this week......

Bleach's position is too high. And I can't see Magico doing worse than ST&RS. :/

I can't see Nisekoi being so low despite having a color page, so I'm calling fake also. And how often has it been that a non-big 3 manga gets to be first place to showcase cover and color pages?

Reasonably common, and according to this, Kuroko no Basket was supposed to be the lead cover/color this week, with Nisekoi, Kurogane, and Genzon! Kodai Seibutsu-shi Pakki getting center color pages. The catch being that Toriko is not supposed to have a color page like this list claims, and 5 color pages in an issue would be exceedingly unusual. An offhand check of the last year say 4 is rare and 5 non-existant.

I thought someone would have posted...
Definately, it was a fake poster using T's old tripcode (stolen? cracked?).
So, yes, The ToC that i quoted is certainly fake.

Sorry for that.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I think I'll be the first to ask, is there any info to what happened to Bleach? Some event or is kubo doing it as a start of a new arc or is he sick?
Maybe I'll get my answers when the chapter is released.
