Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Well, there is only one series which to be axed, so I'm not sure if there will be enough room for two new series. I though there will be two new series since they put one shots, but Drmke said that the one shots are only filled for Bleach's place.

So, I'm not sure if current Jump has enough space for two new series.
That is a bold statement friend. Have you secretly been working for Shueisha this entire time? Otherwise that sounds an awful lot like wishful thinking. Back in reality the last series Jump added was Packy, debuting the first week of November. If they were to add series in issue 12 and 13 that would be exactly three months since the last set of series were added. Do you mean to tell me that Jump will only add one new series during a four month period? Are you implying that if another series is not added in March Jump will only added one new series in five months? That is the prediction you are making, every person who reads this thread knows damn well that their is always something to cancel. When has Jump ever shied away from canceling a series that does not poll well? Stop insulting everyone's intelligence.

They won't cancel Magico. Period. Enigma was rock bottom for months before it got canceled. Magico tasted the bottom, but it stabilized pretty decently. WSJ only cancels series that are constantly poor performers.

ST&RS is pretty much doomed. It had an interesting premise, but shonen tropes don't really work in that type of genre. That's also a terrible ranking for Kuroko. It's not in any danger, but still, that must have been a terrible chapter. HxH is always in the bottom five. Its fanbase probably grew out of WSJ a decade ago, which is why its sales are so high and its rankings are so low.

Harisugawa is hanging on. Magico and Kurogane are doing pretty well, too. Pakky is heading straight to rock bottom. These are preliminary rankings, but it's not a good sign that it dropped that much already.
In what sense of the word is Magico doing well? The last time it was out of the bottom ten was the beginning of last May. In that time it has never been higher than eighth from the bottom. It rarely stays out of the bottom five for more than a week or two in a row. In 2011 Magico spent more time in the bottom five than any other series, including St&rs. This year two, it has been in four out of six possible bottom fives. To make matters worse none of the volumes have even charted, sales can not save it and only hurt it. It is a year old, unpopular manga and an obvious candidate for cancelation. Unless you too are predicting that Jump will randomly change policy to accommodate a series that has not polled well in eight month and never sold well.

Nor is there anything left to cushion Magico: Kurogane has been a fixture in the top ten and will not be canceled any time soon. Volume one of Kagami sold pretty well for a new series, it will at least be spared from the next cut. Pakky's first ranking was this week and it was pretty good, eighth place. Nisekoi has only had two rankings and both have been good: fourth place in issue 5-6, seventh this issue. Neither are safe yet but both will likely survive at least one cut.

For the couple of people talking about Medaka and it not ending because the anime is starting in April, I dunno if the author gave a hint or not, but...

This is an one shot that going to release on Issue 9 (it was released under the name "Famidol" on Jump Next) and it is romcom. I wonder if Jump is thinking of promoting romcom series.

Issue 9:
Koisome Momiji (One Shot) by Sakamoto Tsugiro (Story) and Miura Tadahiro (Illustration)

The story for one shot version on Jump Next was a male protagonist's mother remarried to man who his daughter is very popular idol. Plus, their parents are leaving Japan because of honeymoon + work, so two main characters happened to live by themselves.

Based on what's written on the preview page, I think the upcoming one shot will be pretty similar to the last one.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Maybe they are trying to bring a little variety to the magazine. I know it sounds radical but a few editors might worry that Jump was becoming to reliant on fantasy, supernatural, and action manga for early teens. Jump does have a tradition of manga without any magical powers. Maybe there is some hope of a return to the days when I"S and Ichigo 100% could run alongside Naruto and One Piece.

As can be seen, about 65% of Jump readers in 2011 were 16 years old or older. The editors are likely keeping this demographic shift in mind when choosing new series. While action can appeal to an older audience, that genre is already well represented. There is less of a need to introduce new series. Almost no slice of life manga have debuted over the last few years, now that an audience that could be more appreciative is buying the magazine it only makes sense to try and develop new titles.

When you say slice of life, you don't mean like a legit pure slice of life manga right? I mean, it'd work as long as it had one of the qualities you mentioned, like fantasy or supernatural. Like, for example, Haruhi. A supernatural Slice of Life, immensely popular, fanbase world-wide, etc.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I think I brought up the topic a couple of months ago about the author of Kurogane bad mouthing the Jump Editorial Staff, Newbies and the Jump Author's. But I didn't provide any pictures of quotes.

Here is a picture of the author's apologies before he closed down his twitter account.

Ikezawa Haruto Apologies

And below are just some of the rude comments he has made.

- At this rate I wonder if Medaka Box will continue, it has low rankings but the Otaku buy the Tankobon. Hokenshitsu no Shinigami and Ririentaru are certainly over.....

- But if I was Niizuma Eiji, I would cancel Reborn.

- I could make something 10x more interesting than Medaka Box and yet I still can't get serialized? I guess this is Jump afterall.

- It's like all the other newbie Author's are too muture, too timid, too humble, they are nothing but boring people who sit around and say nothing but harmless remarks. It would be great if their was atleast one newbie that brags but is disliked like the newbie's from the previous generation.

What's funny is that most of it were true (those you translated), at least I can understand and can share what his opinion is. What I wonder is the thing he said about newbies from the previous generation that were disliked, anyone know someone specifically?

Correction. The last time Magico was out of the bottom ten was early last July . Further more it's incorrect that none of the volumes have charted. Here are the chartings it's had so far:

26 -- *,*32,023 *,*32,023 *1 7 magico 1

37 -- *,*21,622 *,*21,622 *1 3 magico 2
45 37 *,*17,393 *,*39,015 *2 - magico 2

34 -- *,*23,857 *,*23,857 *1 3 magico 3
38 34 *,*19,325 *,*43,182 *2 - magico 3

Volume 1 charted in the top 30. Volumes 2 and 3 charted in the top 50, and likely would have charted in the top thirty if they hadn't been released on a Friday and had only three days to accumulate sales for their first "week". By comparison no data is available for Kurogane or ST&RS as the volumes released for them did not make the top 50.

While I am well aware that July comes after May, July was still quite some time ago. A manga ranking in the bottom ten every issue since the first week of July is a very, very bad thing. Jump has been known to cancel mangas for just that sort of thing, from time to time. And while yes, the first volume of Magico did manage to rank in the lower reaches of the top thirty, subsequent volumes failed to build on the momentum. Sales have been stagnant since, as the numbers posted attest. As you are probably well aware only the top thirty appear on Oricon's website. Thirty-one through fifty are relegated to a geocite. The real point is that unlike Mago, Magico does not sell well enough to overcome consistently low rankings.

i think the heroine looks cute, so a good start so far? but the story don't sound as good, too typical and i don't see the ultra new interesting twist, like in niseko or kagami.

That's the current villian talking, being meta is something villains do in this series as shown by her and Kumagawa before her. She also said a chapter or two before that "This shitty battle manga is now over. Starting next week, a shitty love comedy will begin".

I mean clearly Nisio is hinting @ this manga being over before the anime starts (which defeats the purpose of an anime) and that he's also telling us people who like the manga that it's actually shit and is going to continue to be shit.

Nah but Ajimu is 100% correct and has never lied, just like how she said she'll wait for Medaka to graduate oh wait...

lol @ people who think this will be over in 2.5 months, the entire mid school part where Kumagawa kills/seals Ajimu alone will probably take that many chapters. Does a card game featuring Kumagawa and minor characters only that looks like taking 3-4 chapters to finish make this seem like it will end soon?

After reading this week's issue, I feel like Kanou is wrapping up the story.

Also, I pretty enjoyed Doppeler. It was kind of like mix of Psyren and Enigma.

lol if Reborn got cancelled, Tsuna would've been boss by now. we wouldn't get to see adult reborn or any of the anticipated matchups, but i wouldn't mind. it's just so tiring to see Tsuna ranting about him not wanting to be boss even though he even wears the Vongola Gear to school (and it was customized for his use too).

as for Medaka Box... well i think pretty much every manga in Jump is 10x more interesting than Medaka Box. i don't really see why Nisioisin wrote Medaka Box the way he did when he did great with Bakemonogatari.

i'd like to hear more about his tweets though. do you have any of the stuff he said about Bakuman?

What's funny is that most of it were true (those you translated), at least I can understand and can share what his opinion is. What I wonder is the thing he said about newbies from the previous generation that were disliked, anyone know someone specifically?
idk, most mangakas are kinda boring in the regard that they're too timid imo. only the really popular ones ever show their personality (like Oda, who is famous for his craziness), while everyone else is just like... "please support my manga and buy the latest volume blah blah blah". there's nothing wrong with being polite but man, i must agree that it's boring.

Nah, I kind of feeling like like Jump seems to have something with romcom......There are already three romcom series; Medaka Box announced that it'll be romcom; Beelzebub's recent chapters are becoming like romcom; Kurogane seems to romcom situation coming up; and there going to be a romcom one shot on next issue.

And ( perhaps ) the next Bleach Arc will be also a romcom-theme xD
