-_-; it's annoying to see people writing off series instantly when they rank slightly low or just started.

I think we are at a time where we won't have many consistent bottom dwellers which will make things more fun. And just because Ikkyu dropped some doesn't mean it's going to get canceled. And if it does and Magico survives then it just proves generic beats originality everytime...

Takamagahara.. A manga about school fighting with Gods?!! OMG! Sounds kinda like SWOT? (or SWAT was it?)
I hope this is a over-the top manga like JUMP had back in the 80s or early 90s like a mix of Saint Seiya (Gods, mythologies, religions and cool poses) and Otokojuku (School fights, over-the top action, exagerated techniques) :)
As for BLEACH ranking low, I hope it gets back on track because, believe it or not, I think Kubo is still one of the mangakas that has most pride and love for its work, I know they all have or they would have took another profession.. Maybe he just needs to remember that feeling.. Because, he is already full of cash and he is still continuing, maybe his ego got a little high and taking some low TOCs will adjust him :)

People write off new series because it's Weekly Shonen Jump. That's the only answer I can really give. More new series get canceled than stick around, so unless a new series does extraordinarily well, people just assume that it's another failure. And things are looking pretty grim for Ikkyu. If its second chapter is ranked in the Bottom Five, chances are that the following chapters are going to be as well.

Ugh. It has nothing to do with being generic or original.

Something can be generic and still better than something original. Being generic is a trait, sure, but still something completely negligible to how enjoyable a story can be. It has absolutely NO effect (unless the reader is stubbornly against the basic premise itself, which is fine, but then he's not really judging the manga on its own merits).

To put it in generic words, "It only has to be interesting" =)

(and for the record, I think Magico is leagues better than Ikkyuu)

On the ToC, that's Toriko beating Naruto for however long consecutively now? That's pretty awesome.

Glad to see Enigma in the bottom was a fluke.

Concerned about Ikkyu's position, but I agree that it hasn't exactly been living up to it's potential so far. I hope it succeeds though because it could do really well once it finds it's footing.

Oh it's this time of the year already?
I hope the scans for these will show up regularly this time...
Though it's a bit discouraging that most of the Golden Cup winners seem to get axed when they get serialized...

If I remember correctly, Beelzebub is the only one that managed to succeed right?
Akaboshi and Metallica didn't survive, and Ikkyu's future doesn't seem that bright for now...

Except Magico is far from interesting, it's generic and boring. And Ikkyu has only had 5 chapters scanned, if it doesn't get more interesting once it pulls out of the setup phase then I won't say a word about it getting canceled though that remains to be seen.

Akaboshi wasn't a Golden Cup winner though was it? I know Amano won it but I was pretty sure he did a different manga than his oneshot and created Over Time in 06.

And there was also Muhyo to Roji which came in second in the first Gold Future Cup back in 04 and became quite the cult hit. So, there are some series which did succeed (MuhyoRoji, NuraMago, Beelze) : ) Since we had 6 GFC's up till now that makes a 50-50 chance for success. : D

That is correct. He won in 2005 with "Usagi to Kame to Strike" which was not serialized. Instead he was granted a series with Over Time.

?

Mago
Beelze
Metallica
Ikkyu

I recall this being the order of winners
2004: Takaya - Otonari-san no Panic - (ran for one year in JUMP), Muhyo to Roji no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho was another entry which got serialized and became even more popular.

2005: Usagi to Kame to Strike

2006 no Gold Future Cup; instead some special project "Three Issue Consecutive Newcomer Oneshots", which featured Sket Dance and Hitomi no Catoblepas

2007: Nurarihyon no Mago; Aimoto Shou's MUDDY was another entry which got adapted but failed quite hard.

2008: Beelzebub

2009: Metallica Metalluca

2010: Kikai Tonchi-banashi Hanasaka Ikkyuu

I'm not counting Ikkyuu out yet, but seeing it drop into the bottom five this quickly is not encouraging. Now that there is no buffer, I am not encouraged it can rise back up.

This is a very interesting week. Now that several series have been cut, the bottom 5 will mostly consist of familiars. I'm sure next week will be more or less the same until the newer series gets ranked.

My thoughts: Bleach is Bleach; I'm sad to see Mago and Beelzebub low; I wish the placement of Reborn would be a wake up call- this is coming from a stan of the series. The top half is expected, but I'm always happy at Sket being placed high. It's nice that Mago is doing well too.

How about the most popular character in the manga who has legions of fangirls and gets undeserved screentime in the anime and manga due to that?
