The thing is that... He doesn't need to work.

The same way Toriyama doesn't really need to work, Togashi doesn't need to work anymore either.

By releasing the Complete Edition of Yu Yu, god knows how much money he made off of it... Couple with his wife's release of the New Edition of Sailormoon, I'm pretty sure it's more than enough for them to take it easy for a few years.

One source of income for Japanese mangaka is the publishing royalties, which is usually 10~15% off the Cover Price. (I'm fairly sure Togashi is getting the top rate 15%, but for the sake of argument, let's go with 10%).

If you take HxH 27 as an example, the retail cover price (without tax) is 400 yen, assuming that he sold a total of 1 million copies (reasonable, since the Oricon tracking already had it at nearly 900k before going off the rankings), he would have earned:

400*1million*10% = 40 million yen
That's roughly 485k USD from HxH 27 alone (of course, you still need to pay taxes and everything, but still...).
And we're not even counting the Yu Yu Complete Edition or his wife's income...

So, you see why he doesn't need to work unless he wants to?

and lets assume that he made more than 1dollar with animes about his series and video games and... okay i get it.... =)

yeah it's nice to do things like you want but i can't understand it. i mean when i start to tell a story, i would want to finish it. i can accept that he can takes it easy but it's looks like he doesn't care at all.

PS: 485k USD must be ... let me calculate... probably 15 euro :-P

About 343k Euro, give or take.

Togashi was never a hard working/productive mangaka to begin with. The reason he didn't go on with YuYu was because he didn't feel like doing it any more. So he ended the series with that ending.

Same goes for Hunter. If he doesn't feel like doing it, I would rather him being on Hiatus like he is right now, instead of wrapping it up with a lame ending.

Mago's out of the bottom 5!!! \o/ (how far out of, that is the question now...)

Can't believe Beelze's in it though. I guess some people didn't really like the current video game arc. I can't say I loved it either, even if it had its moments.

It looks like Oumagadoki begins to rise with new arc started; also based on spoiler for next chapter of Medaka (not sure whether real or not, but 2chers said it is real), it going to start new arc.

The only series that currently in danger is Hokenshitsu, but we'll see if Oumagadoki will drop again or new series going to be bottom 5 dweller (Dois Sol will officially get ranked on next week).

I'm pretty sure either Hokenshitsu or Oumagadoki, if not both, are going to get axed next :s They've both been pretty much bottom dwellers their entire lives, barely leaving the bottom 5 if at all. The only thing that could possibly save them is if the new series flop hard... I'm really interested to see how Dois Sol does, especially after Light Wing's failure. I've heard Dois Sol is a lot better, but I'm thinking some may have been simply turned off by soccer manga altogether and not even give it a try.

Maybe the rank is still wobbly because of new series, but i am really not surprised Beruze fall to bottom 5.
I feel that it had lose the 'freshness' it has at the beginning, now it feels like it walks the path of typical shounen battle manga >__<
I had lost interest of it these past few weeks.

Whats the problem behind hxh? Is it illness or stress? Because the best way to prevent both thing would be to do it like the boys in bakuman. draw chapters before the ongoing serialization till its enough to back up quite some time. he could even take a break between arcs. in my opinion a much better way than doing nothing at all. It would appreciate this way for all mangakas, so they can think about stuff ahead and do their arcs better. it's not like all of them have such a hard cut in story flow like kuboto, but it wouldn't harm them.

How much money does someone like him make with manga? Seriously he works every now and then like he doesn't need money every month for a living.
I don't understand why he's not using his long hiatuses to get way ahead with the chapters. He could draw 1/3 of a chapter each week, and when he end the hiatus after two years, he would be about 30 chapters ahead. Then he could still go at the same pace for about ten weeks, and we'll at least get 40 chapters.

But then again, I kind of understand why he's not drawing anything. As I have understood, he's a quite rich man, with a quite rich women, so why work? On the other side, he should consider the feelings how his fans, and he should have at least a little passion for drawing manga, especially a manga he's been working on for that long.

He drew a picture for the earthquake disaster victims:

Togashi works by himself, I'm pretty sure. He sells a lot and sets his own schedule. He has had things like, had two children, too, which took up a lot of his time. Though he came out with 20 chapters last year which was more than usual. Whenever he comes back maybe he'll do some more.

Boo Medaka. Stop digging yourself a hole at such a bad time before the new series get their proper rankings.

Not too surprised with Beelzebub either, I actually liked the videogame antics but the training stuff's been incredibly dull.

Overall, weird bottom 5. Wonder how the rest's gonna turn out.

Mago is not ranked this week because it gets a color page for its 3rd anniversary.

Thanks. I totally forgot about that. Was just so happy to finally not see the 3 characters "nurari" in the bottom 5 listing I totally forgot it got a CP this week... :shakefist Well, I hope it stays out of the bottom 5 next week and beyond, and not because of having a CP.

Oh Beelzebub, kindda expecting this though.
The "video game" arc is okay, but the previous arcs were awesome, that's why it pales in comparison.

I'm glad to see Magico doing so well :tem and wow...medaka really fell there..

w00t for Magico and Grimm!
And w00t for Zoo as well!

He works by himself because he's not keeping a weekly series, thus has no need for assistants (Naoko-hime is more than enough, and he can always get his brother to help him a bit as well...)

Kids are a handful, yes, but he's not the only one with them. Yabuki has a little girl, too, and still keeps two series (albeit a monthly and tri-monthly ones).

He could always work toward a straight to tank release if he wanted to, but he didn't. It's a matter of choice, not a matter of circumstances.

At first I'd like to say "Hi, everyone!" I'm new here, well, not really because I've been following this thread for a while now but I finally decided to register to mangahelpers.com just for this thread. Thanks to everyone who's been posting the TOC, Covers and translating, you're awesome!

Now about the TOC:

w00t for Magico and Grimm!
And w00t for Zoo as well!
Magico and Grimm (and Sengoku ARMORS+DOIS SOL) aren't ranked yet because neither of them have got at least 8 chapters. Or am I wrong?

But I'm really happy for Zoo! I love this manga and it's been painful to see it at the bottom.

Beelzebub...hm... I think the chapter beeing ranked here is 95, so looking back I think the place it got isn't the worst, because the chapters afterwards were really great.

Next week (if there's a chapter) we'll see DOIS SOL's first ranking for chapter 1, right? Sorry for asking so many questions o_o

Kishimoto's out as well, along two from Mago:

Magico and Grimm (and Sengoku ARMORS+DOIS SOL) aren't ranked yet because neither of them have got at least 8 chapters. Or am I wrong?
Unranked doesn't mean its placement doesn't have any meanings. Unranked means it's not competing with everyone else at a leveled playing field, but its placement means whether the current snap poll is good or not.

The series that gets cut early usually crashes down near the bottom during the unranked period (with very few exceptions), while those that have decent placement during the unranked period more likely to survive a few rounds.
