Seriously, Jump heroines do not get a break in regards to how powerful/strong they are. :darn

I know this comes across as sentimental, but could it that since a lot of Jump's series are long running, the authors themselves have mellowed down/had children and just find their priorities different.

And the ones who have that potential (Bleach, Naruto) have toned down lately, especially Naruto :D
it's true... up till the war naruto was taking a dark turn... with how jiriya died ( having his arm cut off then his throat and then got stabbed ), itachi and finally the darkest fight between danzo and sasuki... but lately the fights don't have that dark edge :( and that affected the potential of what could have been a great arc

Personally, I find the idea of either of them (and Kuroko too) even being considered for cancellation at this point idiotic and ridiculous...I never really understood the reasoning behind cancelling any series for one that is only going to run for 10 chapters anyway.
Because even if HxH runs for 10 weeks only, there will still be the next wave of incoming after it's done for the year(s), and room would still have to be made regardless.

Either way, I doubt it has anything to do with "authorities", I know there's been a recent paranoia but come on, they have nothing to say about Jump :D
It might. I remember some recent HxH chapter in the latest arc (where Killua fought on trees) where essentially half a page was censored, full black.

Yeah, really there are people that can't believe Hokutou no Ken (Fist of the North Star) actually ran in Shounen Jump because by today's standards it looks like a Seinen manga. With exploding heads and stuff.

Still, it's not like the kind of seinen manga where characters can take drugs and have sex on-screen.

its not like i know all of them, but thats something i didn't see often. yubisaki milk tee for the first, but drugs taken on-screen? both of them something even seinen shows rarely. not like it must show these things, but when the story goes this direction, it should show it. i mean its for adults.

Would suck to see Enigma canned (though I don't think it'll happen yet) but Nishi and Fukujima both coming back at once would pretty much make my life.

That seems a bit too good to be true, but I suppose we'll see soon enough.

(speaks from personal TL experience about one of the series he TLed just to see "what sort of bizarre sex are we getting this time"...)

It is rather unfortunate that the path of Jump could have a lot to do with the cut-back of gore but it was probably just a forgotten secret of success. I remember once reading that Jump was someone infliuencial with it's gore: I even read once that "Hell Teacher Nube" was often cited/ciritcized for hopping on JoJo's "bizarro sick" horror and we even had a bit of it even in YGO when it was more or less "a kids version of Hellraiser" early on. DB itself probably didn't bring an end to it, but those series that were influenced by DB (OP, Naruto) nearly shut the door. (though you could say D-Gray and early Bleach probably had a little bit of that sort of thing)

Sorry, couldn't resist xP

Ooh, I remember that. Iirc those censor squares had to do with Shueisha though.

Not only the battle mangas; Kuroko is quite different from what Slam Dunk was... I guess Jump was always a kids mag, but there was "kids" and now there's kids.

I think Jump's reduction in adult content is mostly a case of changing times. After the "dark age" of the late 90's ended, Jump seems to have retrenched as more of a young teen magazine. By focusing on a younger niche Jump does not have to compete with Magazine, and can focus on an audience more likely to buy copies of the magazine every week. So gore and fanservice give way to PG rated fantasy manga.

↑ This. Right now the top series in WSJ (OP, Naruto, Toriko etc.) have a predominantly young readership so naturally the editors would add new series that those fans might be interested in. In five years the magazine might revert back to a darker tone much like how fashion trends go in cycles.

Regarding Enigma: I don't think it'll be cancelled, but I do believe it will end quicker than most shonen. (My prediction is <100 chapters but who knows.) Reading the chapters, it seems as if Sasaki-sensei has everything planned out between point A to B- other series would go a zig-zag route and spend forever finding its way to its goal.

Well, Naruto, One Piece, and Toriko all have a lot of blood. People getting their arms and legs cut off and their eyes ripped out... getting skewered with stuff and things like that. But they're less graphic. Like if someone loses a limb, a lot of the time you won't see the wound or something. Like when Hidan's head was cut off in Naruto, they never show his neck on-screen.

Enigma's first arc is so far "the whole story". Only one or two little things about what the "bigger picture" are known. There's likely a plan for what'll happen after the e-test arc ends. It's probably gonna be like the first arc of Yuu Yuu Hakusho is about Yuusuke coming back to life, and then it becomes really different.

Lol, speaking of the devil... quite the irony considering how people kept discussing the topic just recently. :tem I'm happy for the MB fans.

-----

As for the changes in representation of certain things in Shounen manga over the past couple of decades and associated tendencies, I always played with the idea to write my doctoral thesis about this issue... it would definitely be interesting to do some research about it.

But I'm not so sure about Gainax... it's just not the same as the Gainax of old = ="

And it looks that that info/prediction is down the toilet :P

Is this confirmed, or just a rumor right now? Looks confirmed but I wanna make sure I'm not misinterpreting it.

Either way, wow.

Woah. That is really awesome, for the authors of Medaka Box! It makes sense, Medaka Box uses quite a bit of mind-screw. I'm sure they'd do a good job at conveying that. o_O

Can't say it'll be a long series though, I imagine it being a usual 26 episode season. And hey, since it'll be out next spring, that means they'll have more manga material to cover. =P

Oh my God, forum update. O_O
