They have to find obscure sports to be a bit novative :-)
Though look at chihaya, the card game looks not interesting at all when you start, still it is a very nice manga to read

The reason that these sports are obscure/unpopular is because they're just not entertaining for an audience to watch. There's nothing innovative about trying to make a bad idea into a manga; instead, it's just hoping that a one shot works as a series, even though the chance of that is kind of low.

I've never read Chihaya, so I can't comment on that front.

Well you can call it an innovative idea by the mangaka or at least a good risk when you write a Oneshot about a rather unknown/not so popular sport. Saying that they only try to make a series out of a Oneshot is silly though - a decent amount of people must have appreciated it and from what I see here, quite a few western fans did too. The theme isn't something that makes a manga good or bad, it's how the theme and the plot is delivered. Even if there's something you have absolutely no interest in at first it can turn out to be awesome if the mangaka does a great job.

Chihayafuru may be a good comparison - something that sounds kind of strange/boring at first (at least for western fans) but turns out to be highly entertaining. I would really love to play Karuta now because the mangaka delivered it in such a way that I'm really interested now.

Anyway, if you read the oneshot you can see it is not like Eyeshield 21 or Slam Dunk. Lacrosse isnt really the main focus.

...A Lacrosse manga? :vin
Not just lacrosse: girls lacrosse :nrr

I shall definitely read this.

What we need is a rhythm gymnastics manga. Now!

Seriously though, a Lacrosse manga sounds pretty interesting. It'd be awesome if it had the same effect with Lacrosse in Japan that Slam Dunk had with Basketball and that Eyeshield 21 had with American Football.

Lacrosse isn't really even popular in America though. There is a "professional" league, but no one watches or anything.
College lacrosse is pretty popular in the mid-Atlantic. Places like North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania. Also a popular youth league and high school sport here. I know a lot of former players. Fun sport.

Yeah, I know, but about nowhere else, although I went to high school in Vermont and a lot of high schools had it. I tried to get our school board to fund it, but they said no because they were being cheap, plus I think it would've brought us to more male teams, which would've then brought in Title IX, and they would've had to find another team sport for females.

All of the college teams that play are from those states. Still, when I think about college lacrosse, my mind immediately goes to the unfortunate circumstances at Duke and the depravity that occurred due to the wildness and everything. That's not a fault of lacrosse, but it's part of the culture to some degree.

If I recall correctly, the one shot was fairly decent, and it sounds like it's a lot more like Haikyuu than a traditional sports series anyway, so it could have promise. The Japanese have really taken to Haikyuu's more slice of life/friendship look at sports.

After reading the last chapter of Bulge I really hope it doesn't get cancelled. I really liked the chapter. Please let the second axed series be Kurogana or Koisome or Takamagahara, but not Bulge.

Haikyuu is not really slice of life so far in my opinion.

To be perfectly honest, while it was a little interesting, it's still not enough for me to prefer Barrage being kept over Koisome.

I really liked Cross Managa one shot as well, and obviously am looking forward to its serialization. However, judging by what we have already seen of it, actual lacrosse is as important to it as actual ninjas to Naruto.

There ARE even some Sports manga and such other manga where the author makes up his/her own game. I don't think "which sport" is what makes a series popular, I think it's how it's executed. I mean, Nononono was pretty popular and it was about ski jumping.

Date-Senpai... I honestly do not see much success but who knows

The LaCrosse to expect as you go...how it goes

Try 'Speed Racer' :)

Better yet, watch 'Redline'.
red line is very good.

Ski jumping is kind of an awesome sport though. Of course it's how it's executed, but it's easier to make sports manga around more popular sports/games. We've seen things like Dois Sol (if you've forgotten, Dois Sol was a football/soccer series), that were absolutely horribly written, and it's questionable why Jump even published them.

Since Black appeared, Bulge is towards its ending.

Koisome is nice... reminds me of Katsura's I"s.

A Lacrosse manga? Really? I made a joke a while back that I think Jump is seriously trying to cover all sports in the mag. I mean if they they think that the story is good to add it anyway.
That may be the case, especially with ES21 and Cross Manage now :XD

It's a regional sport, but it's definitely popular. No one really watches MLS either, but soccer is certainly popular here as a youth and collegiate sport. As well as international and leagues in other countries. Why it isn't popular is for a variety of reasons. There's plenty of popular sports in the US all competing for TV time.

Not just lacrosse: girls lacrosse :nrr

I shall definitely read this.
Oh my...yes, Girls Lacrosse :hurr

I was surprised to see another Lacrosse manga...but ComicBlade would be the magazine for it

Read Countach, by the author of Bremen and Hareluya II Boy. I remember seeing raws for it years ago, and it looked like an episode of Top Gear in manga form. Looks like it has just recently begun to be scanlated, though not much is done of it.
