HxH is really a different case, if they didn't cancelled it yet after years of hiatus, they wouldn't do this no matter what will happen.
One Piece has a immense fanbase, probably even the part who votes for it is bigger than the rest of series' fanbases.

Always at the bottom. But it doesn't matter because it doesn't usually have time to begin getting "ranked" because of how quickly it goes on hiatus after it starts up again.
The series still sells godly though so its rankings don't matter and it won't be cancelled.

Not likely.
Something like that might happen with a more popular series, but Soul Catcher(S) has been struggling to survive since day 1.
If Kiruko-san was running right now and was cancelled, I could see it being switched to Jump Next due to its huge internet popularity, but something like Soul Catcher(S) is just going to be inevitably cancelled sooner or later and forgotten about.

Until the TOC rankings come out, there is no good measure of early popularity. Most Japanese manga fans don't read magazines, they read tankobon. TOC rankings will show the popularity among readers who buy the magazine. Until rankings are available, there is no good way to gauge popularity among the population at large. Counting threads on 2CH might give some idea, but I don't know how accurately that would reflect casual fans. I can't navigate 2CH, so I have not looked.

For the record: Stealth Symphony has had a decent number of mentions on Twitter, mostly because it's by the author of Drrr. Illegal Rare and iShojo have had relatively few mentions. Tokyo Wonder Boys is not out in Japan until this coming Monday. It all means practically nothing.

I don't really read manga anymore, lost track of what issue it stated in.

2CH and social media probably are not good predictors of TOC rankings. Popularity is still effected by how new these series are. Readers need time to find them.

I don't consider internet fanbases as a good means to gauge popularity.
I mean we all remember Kiruko.

It's reasonable to expect Soul Catcher(s) could get the same deal that title did, with the 4-chapter sequel in LIVE. Maybe. who knows. Unlikely, it didn't exactly light the world on fire when Killco did it.

If I recall correctly it not only had a huge following on Japanese art communities, but also had a big presence on 2ch as well?
I haven't seen much of that with Soul Catcher(S).

Yeah, but Soul Catcher(s) actually sells more copies than Killco. Which kinda matters more to Shueisha, realistically. Don't get me wrong Killco's online achievements were stunning (*cough*talkedaboutitonmypodcast*cough**cough*), but kinda unimportant.

Also there's more results for Soul Catcher(s) on Pixiv than for 新米婦警キルコさん so... Yeah. Given time most titles can achieve that sorta art following. It's just that Killco had it from day dot.
