No! That is not what it is saying. Youre implying that "digital" would be the only other channel increasing, but they clearly use it in the plural which still suggests traditional print channels, maybe even others are increasing. New retailers and stores could be opening, maybe new mom and pop shops, etc. You would also be working off some assumption that the ones that had a 4mln print run didnt have any digital copies sold which I dont think there is any evidence present to suggest to any of us that the previous volumes, volumes dating back to 2011, truly did not sell digitally, which is impossible if, accoding to your post One Piece is popular digitally.

Additionally based on what was previously posted by Stark700

We cant simply assume that the loss of 200K print copy buyers are truly being replaced with digital buyers, we would be ignoring the natural buyer attrition process. For example if volume 68 had 4mln print buyers then we would have 200K digital buyers with a grande total of 4.2mln copies total. Now we have with v77 3.8mln print buyers and 200K digital buyers which gives a total of 4mln. We have lost 200K buyers in the process.
I love this thread. I really do, despite all the things I say. Here we are talking about new series surpassing a well past 10 year old series as if that has never happened before ever, or that makes the ten year old series any less of a juggernaut. Oh and lets not forget these new series aren't even a year old yet, and one hasn't even been put out for sale for us to have stable numbers to compare! Yet we're already talking about it surpassing a series that has had more than ten years worth of mettle and a sizeable fanbase. Shouldn't these new series be compared to other lesser series first? Oh ooh, lets have more fun with this, and start asking ourselves how quickly these newbies will over take the old guard. 2 years? 3 years? 5? Oh man this is so bad for me that it has to be fattening, yet I can't help but go for seconds.

Why years? I thought we were talking about months here? XD

Touche, kind sir. Touche. I apologize. The new series will surpass the old established series by the end of the year, and the old established series will be forgotten in 2016. I feel confident in my prediction.

Even if One Piece has a notable drop in sales it will still be the best selling Jump series by a wide margin.
I mean, if Bleach can have its anime cancelled due to terrible TV ratings, have its manga rankings absolutely plummet, as well as have a dip in volume sales but still manage to not get cancelled and have a natural ending, then the single most best selling and most popular manga of all time is in no danger whatsoever.

Do you not understand that each successive volume sells less than the previous?
If you look at sales numbers, One Piece is still stable.

Total sales in week 3 for volume 64 - 2,652,700
sales as of week 3 for X volume
v70 - 2,559,632
v71 - 2,487,632
v72 - 2,354,005
v73 - 2,561,355
v74 - 2,399,428
v75 - 2,419,024
v76 - 2,656,714
v77 - 2,497,878

You'll see a drop in Bleach, Gintama, or Toriko and others. But you cannot be serious if you actually think that One Piece has actually seen a significant drop.
And notice that there are differences between each volume regarding how many days it appeared in the Oricon chart. One volume will sell less if it had less days, obviously. It just reinforces the fact that the One Piece sales is stable. Probably many people migrated to digital version as well, which doesn't count as decrease and so on. Who says that One Piece is decaying is really in another world, not in this one...

Interesting article showing how Shueisha is inside and a brief interview with an editor: http://www.tofugu.com/2015/04/27/exploring-shueisha-and-an-interview-with-a-manga-editor/

Really, editorial department is a mess. XD

So I guess continuing to animate older footage has become somewhat of a trend, makes me a lot more hopeful for a Ruroken remake after Naruto anime ends. Could be next year since it will be 20 years to the anime.

Odd that they choose more Dragonball instead of more Bleach or in Toei's case, more Toriko.

I pray this suggests that Shueisha would strongly nudge their partners to give us a Naruto Shippuden Super someday. Im scared of the thought of waking up and not having a Naruto episode to see on Thursdays.

Come on guy! It's not like Toei is going to turn Goku into a child & have him travel to space with annoying Pan & nerdy Trucks to search for black dragon balls.

I don't think it was a general strategic choice to make more of a JUMP anime, it was just that specifically the DB movies are successful so they figured they'll ride the money train, I think.

The story will start after events of the latest movie! So no GT remake.

yeah to be honest I'm just happy with anything that formalizes the retconning of GT.

Darn, I was hoping it would suggest that Toei would be able to leverage their DB skills for the adapting of Hero Academia too.

I'm not too optimistic about a new Dragonball thing given how Toriyama's recent stuff has been less than stellar. But I dunno maybe they can manage to make it okay. I haven't seen either of the new movies, they don't look that great. Maybe I'll watch them at some point.

On one hand I am interested for nostalgia's sake, but on the other... DB might be a bit too old-fashioned for today's market. The genre evolved quite a bit in years since its end and much of what was great in DB Era would not be passable nowadays.

Much of what was great in DB Era would not be passable nowadays because they created everything that exists nowadays.

just a note to people who watched DBZ as kids and don't actually realize how good it is: go read dragon ball, from the beginning, as a manga. it's one of the best manga in existence, and for a good reason. it's really fun and almost all successful shonen heroes are just rip-offs of Goku, it revolutionized the entire genre.

as a side note, the jump from DB to DBZ is a lot less well-defined than the anime makes it out to be. it's a great adventure story and it's a long time before it becomes solely about fights. I would argue the line between db/dbz is vaguer than even the line between naruto and shippuuden, yet people seem to treat DB and DBZ as separate stories. yeah there's a timeskip, but there was like a million timeskips before it, and goku was already an adult before raditz arrived.

Anyway I think DB is actually perfect for today's audience because there is a lot of flashy battles, which seem to be a big deal among young shonen anime viewers (note the sheer amount of amv's for reference). Something like Fist of the North Star would be too old fashioned, but DB is perfectly fine.

I think there is plenty of room for the universe to expand. But my concerns are the poor glossy animation, CGI, and the lack of interest they seem to have in expanding said universe. The two current most movies (especially the latest one) are an obvious cash in and it all feels like bad fan fiction at this point.

Give me something made in the same vein as Tree of Might or World's Strongest, then we'll talk.

It's still to early for Toriko. Last anime adapted up to 260 chapter I think, ~60 chapters are not enough for a new season, unless they were aiming for 26eps, which I doubt they would do.

Speaking of Toriko, I hope it will finally gets a CP somewhere in 25-29th Issue for its anniversary. Its been more than 30 chapters since the last CP....

I liked Mitsukubi, hope the oneshot will be good too :>
