Decided to read Black Torch just now, and yeah, that was an awesome first chapter. I can definitely see the Bleach comparisons.

Is it serialized outside WSJ or a WSJ oneshot?

Judging by the first chapter alone, if all goes well with this series, then this series could end up being the FMA of this generation. Basically meaning the "monthly success that could've been even MORE successful if it was weekly." Interesting to see that it basically combines Bleach & Naruto.

Definitely keeping my eye on it.

debatable. The fact that it's a MONTHLY and in a lesser known magazine give Hiromu Arakawa more freedom in her manga. Also less stress -> able to produce quality story.

On which weekly magazine? remember if she was in 2001 in WSJ, she would have to compete with
High Tier One Piece (4 years), Naruto (2 years), Hunter x Hunter (3 years),
Mid Tier Black Cat (1 year), JoJo part 6

Sometime have to share ranking with Prince of Tennis, Hikaru no Go.

Basically, it's the same case as AoT if Hajime Isayama decide to give to WSJ.

One thing's for sure, if it does become a big hit, it'll probably be closer to FMA in terms of name recognition. Assuming they get a really good studio to adapt it to popularize it even further.

Was thinking the same thing. Art looks nice though.

Here you guys go with hyperbolic comparisons after ONE chapter of a series. Congratulations, you never disappoint me.
another weird thing about this thread that people are using it as a general thread
they discuss what anime is airing, discuss studios, manga from other magazines, Japan as a country, politics...

although we have threads on this site specific to all these things :neutral

Oh, come on. The only hyperbolic thing said was that it could be FMA-tier. Everyone else was just saying it was good, and that there are Bleach similarities. That's not hyperbolic.

Honestly, even without the FMA-tier comparison, it is still a good first chapter. I actually think as far as first chapters go, Black Torch is actually better than My Hero Academia's.

"when people use another series to justify a thought in another manga" --- Twitter. Everyone is guilty of this. It's like power ranking or ships, gotta compare and contrast for validity :nah naw dawg.

With that being said, the Bleach vibes are real. I'll follow this definitely.

You don't really think that do you? MHA had a interesting setting right out the gate and was really emotional. Black Torch was basically Bleach but instead of the mc talking to spirits it's animals

I do. Here's the difference: MHA's first chapter went for the emotional hook at the end, while Black Torch's went for the plot hook. If you put the chapters side-by-side, MHA's first chapter looks like the end of a one-shot. In Black Torch, we're given the cliffhanger of the "mysterious organization" that's going to play a major part in the plot.

Given my preference, I prefer the latter approach.

Also, just to clarify my statement, I don't believe Black Torch can reach FMA-tier levels of popularity. But if it does, I won't be surprised. It has a lot of solid things going for it, after all.

I mean all it did was introduce a organization that hunts down monsters. Didn't really do much with its plot. But I mean you can't argue personal preference so it's cool

Call me messed up, but i found that dog scene more emotional than Deku's over-exaggeration emotions in the 1st chapter.

Why is Black Torch being compared to MHA?
They're two very different series that clearly go for a completely different tone, demographic, and fanbase.
