How would the anime be doing "its job" at selling a volume more than 100 chapters ahead of where the anime is?
More people buy the older volumes after seeing the anime, therefore, there are more people caught up and ready to buy the new volumes when they release.

No data has been presented to suggest that the old volumes are selling and people are sudddnly caught up as of this season.

Yes there is? Check Shoseki for example. During S2's run, every single volume has been inside the top 200 each week.

The guy who was leaking the ToC said he was quitting. So we'll likely be waiting until Thursday for the foreseeable future.

Well for instance, this week, every volume sold between an estimated 7,500 and 4,250. So yeah, it's not a lot. However, small growth does not equal no growth like you're suggesting.

Over 14 volumes and a few months, that's 150-300k. Significant enough. That's how Kingdom got it's massive boost a year or two ago, it just had 3x the volumes so could rack in 100+k per week. 3000 a week per volume for something that's already past it's initial anime boost is still pretty impressive.

This makes me a teensy bit hopeful we'll see the volumes cracking around 800K at the very least once we get to season 3. The sheer amount of hype in regards to the next season should hopefully push even more people to buy out the volume in bigger droves.

Honestly I believe it already has when taking digital sales in to consideration.

That's what I'm thinking too. Now if only Jump would release the total numbers to appease the data-obsessed folks.....

I still think that digital sales account for like 1/10 of total sales at most. If it was such an impactful number then we would know the numbers already.

Also, as sad as it is, I don't think that Hero Academia will grow much even with a third season. I'd love it if it did though because the training camp arc and hideout raid were great.

Shueisha holding back One Piece digital releases by a month makes me believe that digital sales are a big deal. They are indirectly suggesting that if both digital and physical releases of One Piece came out at the same time the digital sales would eat in to the physical sales. Obviously Shueisha would not want that as the digital releases are cheaper hence they would make less revenue. I believe that Shueisha would implement that release schedule for other series if they were even just half as big as One Piece to protect their revenue.

Except digital releases are not cheaper, they are the same price minus tax (would still likely be charged at checkout). Meaning Shueisha probably make more money off digital because there are no printing or distributing costs.

Stalling digital edition release is the most ridiculous thing I've seen publishers doing, there is no reason at all to do that and they just punish readers who buy digital.

I can think of at least three reasons for publishers to want to give people incentives to buy physical copies off the top of my head, I'm sure there's plenty more.

Selling digital copies means they'll be ripped and posted online and destroy physical sales.

People are more likely to complete their collection if they have physical copies because of material attachments.

It keeps relationships with bookstores open which they need to promote and sell the magazine.

I know they make more profit from digital. That's why I specifically said they would make less revenue i.e. 400 yen for digital instead of 432 yen using One Piece as an example.

If what your saying about the tax being added on is true then why do Shueisha hold back One Piece volume releases for digital. It makes no sense because the revenue incentive is gone and they could be making more profit by releasing the volumes digitally at the same time as the physical releases.

The same way Black Clover is expected to get a boost for Volumes 13 and 14 which are a 100 chapters ahead of the anime. Even if it doesn't show up in the top 50, and even if its hypothetically 3k in sales, that still 3000 people that bought the volumes and can decide to buy later volumes. It all adds up just like with Kingdom which went from around 300k to 750k in 2 years and is now very close to getting to a 1 million first printing soon.

1) Piracy was not born with Kindle, it was there since before that, scanners are meant for that, Japanese publishers started to make digital edition available just very recently, there are mangas that even don't have any, it doesn't stop Manga Editors to rip it and will never stop.

2) Material attachment doesn't exist in Japan, there are plenty of manga cafe where you can go, pay a small fee and read whatever you want without cluttering your room with books. There was another service, a rental service if I'm not mistaken, I will have to ask my Japanese friend on Twitter. If I were in Japan, I would have no reason to buy mangas directly.

3) Heh, maybe it is a fair reason for small publishers, but Shueisha... The bookstores need more Shueisha than Shueisha needs bookstores. XD

Anyone knows what is this 2nd BC's Novel about? I heard some time ago that it would be about Konjiki no Yoake (Golden Dawn I guess), but now...
