The yearly top 10 anime franchises ranking was released by Nikkei Entertainment (who got it from Oricon):

This includes BDs, CDs and Volume sales. Heroaca was around 1.4 billion back in the half-yearly sales posted on ANN so it more than doubled its sales in this second half through the openings, endings, and BDs along with regular volume sales.

The third column is the number of items released that counted towards these sales.

I'm confused as to why Tokyo Ghoul is that high up. That's surprising. Does the live action movie count? If so I'm surprised Gintama isn't here.

So Hero was number 18 half way through the year and it climbed up to the top 10 at the end of the year, very nice!

If I'm understanding this correctly, this does not count digital downloads or movie ticket sales or stuff like that.
Would that be correct?

It counts everything but merchandise (toys, videogames, etc.) i.e. LN, CDs, BD/DVD and manga since if they were weighed them Dragonball would be on top for that alone.

Probably not??? I dont remember Kurobas Last Game causing a boost. I dont remember boruto movie pushing naruto sales, or the assclass movie(s), or DeathNotes either.

It'll have to get a Strong World level push to have any sort of meaningful boost in sales at this point but yes I can see it getting another one with the movie.

The live action AssClass movies did cause a boost. Boruto and Last Game aren't good examples since they came after the conclusion of their respective series and it kinda doesn' really matter since both movies wind up doing tremendously well at the box office.

The half-year listing on AnimeNewsNetwork said that it doesn't include "games, film tickets, digital downloads, and other forms of media sales."
That's why I was curious.

Please tell me that Shokugeki's franchise sales dropped. I got scared for a moment & thought that it was #7.

Wait, why is Kingdom (キングダム) on here?
That hasn't had an anime since mid 2015. Is it counting that purely on the phone games? (They didn't even sell BDs they only sold DVDs of the anime)

Kinda seems bizarre they still have only adapted 16 volumes of like 50 into anime if that's the case.

It's just aggregation of all the categories Oricon tracks. (Manga, Anime, LN, music)

well, Fate franchise will likely beat it with FGO alone.

How did Yuri on Ice lose like 150 million yen after 6 month? From 32.6 -> 31.1.

I think this doesn't count digital, since Oricon doesn't track digital.

I overestimated Kingdom's number by 200 million yen, while underestimated BNHA. Besides manga and BD/DVD, does BNHA have any other releases that count towards this?

Music sales like OPs, EDs and soundtracks also count though I can figure out how 70 products of Heroaca counted. I'm not fully aware of those 70 products but the fact that it pulled in half of OP's total for the categories this chart counts with less than 10% of the products counted, OP's 843 to Heroaca's 70, is a pretty good feat.

Someanithing on twitter thinks that the third column might be "all the items of said franchise that have been released ever in Oricon database, not just in a year", which makes more sense since I really couldn't think of 800+ One Piece items in 2017 not counting merchandise.

this is what I always thought as well. Even if the item was released years ago if you made a purchase this year it would count towards this year sales (like we don't have a separate manga chart for items released this year only but for series as a whole)
