Yeah was just thinking. Maybe we should stop referring to them as ranks. Didn’t we discuss that the 8 week rule is just a myth
Brah, there's so much about the TOC that's just a myth that I still have to wonder where did these arbitrary set of rules even come from. The earliest of TOC leaks came from a livejournal account.

Popular in the front, axes in the back. Just because the editors know we're playing doesn't mean they've got real rules to this.
Not even that is sound. I like Kimetsu, but there's no way it's more popular than MHA, Haikyuu, Gintama, etc. Dr. Stone is a another prime example of this. And that "axes in the back" rule really only applies to new series. Most things that are there are pretty safe (Souma, RxL, Gintama).

A more accurate "ranking" would be JUMP SUPER PUSH for the top 4ish, then the rest are just randomly placed by the editor.

What he means is the top placements are likely just arbitrary. the top placement doesn't necessarily mean it's blowing the other series out of the park. It's just saying "These 6 series are the 6 most popular manga in the magazine. We're not going to say which order their in. Just know that rthis 6 are the most popular"

We really should put up a sign to remind everyone: The rankings are a game.

I mean, I know that. It's just that I had the doubt about HxH since I saw someone actually counting it and I wasn't remembering if it's true or not.

Also, TOC isn't an ranking per se, it's just placements by the editors and more of a marketing than anything for the series. Well, even if there's still the polls online these days but they're not the only influences on it since there's other factors like an anime, live action or other things coming. And I wouldn't say that the top is the popular and the bottom is the axes since there's most of the times manga that sell well or are established in these positions like this week.

Just saying, but Neverland, Stone and Kimetsu haven't left the top 5 since the editor change.

Well, I read the other two Act-Age chapters and I really liked it. Much more than Bozebeats tbh. It's such a shame that no one is picking this series, seems really interesting.

My “theory” is that they want more attention to newer things, and MHA hangs in the middle because it’s already well established.

That's called the SUPER PUSH minus RxL.

MHA and Haikyuu appear to share similar circumstances when it comes to their position in the ToCs. By virtue of popularity of sales alone they should be in the top positions along with One Piece. However like Nemesis says there is an element of marketing involved so I wouldn't take the ToCs, as they are right now, as a direct indicator of chapter quality but rather a measure of how much the editorial department is willing to invest in the series.

They do correlate to the readers' tastes to some degree. Editorial department won't put someone that people don't like at the front.

I think that's the safest thing to assume. Positions aren't pure rankings but they do have to do with how much the readers like the past chapters of the series.

I think one general rule with the TOC placements that we can agree with is the following. If a new series is placed in the bottom 3-5 of the TOC for 8-10 weeks in a row, then it's most likely axed.

Kokoro Nashi no Kirimu miniseries ended today on Jump Plus

it was pretty good imo, it felt like something Satoshi Mizukami would write

The series axed which made me sad most for their cancellation are :
St&rs, magico, UBS, takamagahara, demon's plan, red sprite, judos, samon, mononofu, stealth symphony, soul catcher(s), hungry joker, kiruko san, cross manage, kurokuroku, hachi, illegal rare, TWB, mitsukibi condor ,yoakemono , sesuji wo pin, and recently Poro and hungry mary

It's a long list, sorry.

What about older series always ranking in the bottom? RxL has been in the bottom 3 for 4 weeks straight and in the bottom 5 since october. In fact there were just two issues (ignoring the color pages) since then where RxL wasn't in the bottom 5, issue 50 and the double issue 4/5, but in both of them it was just one position above the bottom 5.
Paired with the declining sales for it's 3 volumes it's a prime candidate for the axe.

I don't know what to say regarding older series, but with new ones the thing I said above seems to be how things go.

With RxL, I think they're just aiming to make it their next popular fujo beloved sports manga. The sales are good and the best way to get this to blow up would be an anime.

Robot x Laserbeam cannot be considered old, but it cannot be considered like other new series as well. Past experiments with Kuroko no Basket suggests that they are trying to hang in there until the anime, Kuroko no Basket was also pretty bad in ranking until the anime made it explode, so they are probably thinking that it will happen with Robot x Laserbeam as well, thanks to fujoishi.

Old series, like 100 chapters or more, ranking poorly is nothing new and the way it stays in the magazine very long despite that is not new either. It is much easier to axe a new series, but the old ones are also axed eventually... It can take time, but they are axed.

Thought its easier to axe an old series than a new series, a new one you have to pray to chance and wonder whether or not it just needs time to get a following or if there is no hope for it. Many newer series lasted like 25-50 chapters, clearly showing while strongly suggesting and highly implying that the editors were praying to chance hoping that perhaps they needed time to build a loyal fanbase.
