My prediction about Ziga:

Mysterious dress and hat girl will finish being Ziga's core/brain/true body/whatever

So I’ve never actually read Dragon Ball before, just Z onwards, but I started that recently. I’m totally blown away at how perfect it’s first few volumes are! Toriyama’s crafting of his story and characters are flawless (except the perverted stuff which is a bit out of place these days), and the pacing is spot on. Every single member of the cast is significant to the story, whether they be friend or foe, and just when you’re starting to get tired of the cast in a certain set of events, he changes things up to keep it fresh. They all pop up frequently enough to remain relevant, and they’re given proper development so you actually enjoy their presence. None of them are generic or just there for the point of it, and they all have certain quirks that make them vastly different to how you’d imagine they’d be on their first appearance, so they’re actually memorable and feel alive. The entire world he’s crafted in these first few volumes is just all so perfectly linked together.

I know it was a pretty big deal at the time, hence why the series took off so well (though most of its success was later in its life), but even nowadays we barely see series with such solid beginnings. After following Jump for a few years and reading so many series that just completely fail in their set up, I’ve come to appreciate stuff like this a lot more. I never would have imagined DB was this good considering DBZ totally fails in many of these aspects (though excels at others).

First dragonball was amazing. Thw manga is so goos when it was grounded in martial arts realism. Too bad its only been downhill from the end of the cell games.

Its sad martial arts manga are not relevant anymore. Jump needs its own wuxia awakening.

Speaking about classics: it's surprising for me how in 2018, barring Dragon Ball and JoJo, people still remember Hokuto no Ken or Yu Yu Hakusho, but Saint Seiya is almost forgotten (also Kinnikuman, but Kinnikuman never was so popular in occident).

I mean, by fans. Is true that Saint Seiya has unlimited spinoffs, but almost nobody follows them or speaks about original manga.

PD: What we should be getting, and NOW, is Ring ni Kakero next anime season, not another Saint Seiya spinoff.

The funny thing is that Dragon Ball is a manga made entirely in improvisation. The first arc was not popular, almost led the series to cancellation, that's why Toriyama created the tournament. And remember, the Rabbit Mob probably died when Master Roshi destroyed the moon.

You've seen me making some posts about 60s and 70s Jump manga in previous weeks.

Now I'm changing the perspective. My question: what Jump titles from 60s and 70s did you already know?

Just watched Tsubasa and I’m pretty impressed. Been shying away from the series for years because of the aesthetic, but DavidPro managed to modernize it while still maintaining what made it unique. Had some stand out animation moments too, and I like how they restructured some of the first chapter to improve flow. Still certainly had their Jojo feel though lol. Seems this wont be another Hoshin Engi at least... Not that I ever doubted them.

Otoko Ippiki, Ring ni Kakero, Harenchi Gakuen, Mazinger, Kochikame, Kinnikuman (though doesnt really count). I find I’ve heard of most of the bigger series until the 80s, but pre that is largely unknown. Unless you go out of your way to research them.

Hadashi no Gen is a 1970s title that I was surprised when I discovered it had been published on Jump.

Saint Seiya has some brilliant stuff. Some of the best fights in any manga, and perfect panelwork, really creative art, very charming and a very cool world . The character design can take some getting used to for some but calling Kuramada a bad artist is as insane as calling Oda or Togashi bad artists.

The issue with Saint Seiya is the sheer amount of asspulls (repetitive asspuls at that), and some extremely weak arcs (silver saints, all of Poseiden), but so do most Jump series, and the pros far outweigh the cons for me.

Kurumada is definitely a bad artist, at least for early Saint Seiya. He could only draw faces at one angle (heck not even that really considering one eye would always be in their forehead).

In terms of writing, I like the concept more than the development. In terms of art, I like the page compositions and details, but Kurumada is very limited when it comes to body expression. The characters look like marble statues all the time. And the fights don't have choreographies, they are made using only one pose: fighter A punching, fighter B falling in the background. So, if I have to choose, I choose the anime.
