The HQ manga has serious pacing issues to the point where it totally kills my enjoyment, the anime is an easy 10/10 though. HZ started off quite boring I admit, but it’s only gotten better as it’s gone on, and it’s only getting even better. Doesn’t help when comparing considering HZ is the master of pacing and is constantly throwing new hype without anything feeling rushed. I feel HQ peaked early around the season 2 content and has slowly gotten worse, while HZ better. The current match is the only one that’s been properly built up to since the Aoba Johsai match. RxL just makes me mad because Fujimaki has screwed his characters and interactions so bad compared to Kuroko.

unless the anime somehow makes the series explodes, then I think they will pass over it and bring out RxL print volumes (still hasnt been announced). I cant imagine there are THAT many people bugging them at cons and in emails etc weekly begging for HZ as much as they were for Haikyuu, and I think they HAD to get Haikyuu!! since it was such a success and a perfect target to test the waters if sports series could be great again in america.

Funny, I find the opposite. Although the anime has a great production (OST, animation) and great climax scenes, I think it drives the matches too slowly because the characters need to stop all the time to have their monologues.

RxL I dropped after 10 chapters. Too boring.

Ippo > Slam Dunk just throwin that out there
I will fight you on that.

In all seriousness, SD takes a while in the beginning to get into its groove and then just explodes. Sakuragi was rather unbearable in the beginning with his "I'm a genius!" gag and his court-side manner but I soon found myself even more immersed and excited then when I read Alabasta or Yorknew. I consider those my personal peaks of those respective manga, though Enies Lobby and Chimera Ant do come close. Its not even just hype as the actual scenarios of the matches were well done. The Kainan match in particular is Slam Dunk in its prime. I could also follow every single movement and grasp the flow of the action, something OP sometimes loses me with especially in recent arcs.

I personally consider sports manga as more difficult to write than battle manga. The mangaka has to come up with various playstyles and coordinate out whole matches such that everything is within the rules of the game, showcases the characters' strengths and weaknesses and keeps us on the edge of our seats, especially if its a sport that is not as well known or the reader has no experience with said sport or sports in general. I couldn't care less about basketball. You can end up with series like PoT and Kuroko that decide to go fantastical as a way to do this but even that's fine with the right execution.

I still don't understand how Fujimaki hasn't grown at all as a writer since Kuroko. He has to resort to the antagonist being an evil, cheating asshat and pull the whole "I'm gonna teach that damn brat a lesson! GRRR" in order to create a cheap sense of tension.

It's just another thing that makes me appreciate Haikyuu more. Furudate doesn't have to make the opposing team cheat or evil to create tension.

Shohoku vs Sannoh match probably has the best art in any shonen manga. It was insane.

There really isn't a sports manga I'll say that doesn't have a slow start. You have to take time to build the characters and their dynamics and of course explain how to actually play the sport, this is the most tedious aspect of any sports manga since its made with the knowledge that readers don't know the mechanics of the game. It feels like Prince Of Tennis avoided all this and went straight to the action but at that same token it got a lot of shit wrong and inaccurate and then just outright stopped caring about consistency which made it hilarious.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN I can't hit a ball that doesn't bounce, or entering THE ZONE, and the GBA game stays true to the series too. Wish they make more tbh.

I wonder if viz will replace it with another jump+ series on their free site, Juuni Taisen essentially took over Astra's spot.

Just read through the sports manga debate, great stuff guys.

Although I still think that it all boils down to matter of taste and nostalgia no? I know lots of people see SD as the peak of all sports manga because it’s the first excellent sports manga they read. Personally it’s not my cup of tea, although I appreciate the art to a certain extent.

Greatest Jump sports manga for me is Hikaru no Go though, simply cause I like its fantastical story more, and it’s my first taste of sports franchise. And greatest sports manga for me is a little known spin off Doraemon baseball manga :P

There's so much great/good sports manga. With the ones that I read, I would say that my favorite is Baby Steps. But there's so much that I still need to read like Touch, Ashita no Joe, Katsu, Rough, H2, Cross Game, Slam Dunk, Diamond no Ace, Haikyuu and many others. lol

missed the Slam Dunk discussion but I'm in the camp that it is not only the greatest sport manga in Jump history but arguably the greatest manga period

speaking of SD, the latest issue of Gessan magazine had a oneshot called Dobanobado, which was basically (Hanamichi discovers badminton)

I'm not joking here's some pics
