Will this chapter include another "hold this page under the right light to see some nipples" controversy?

Has there ever been a year in WSJ's history where a new batch of series didn't start in issue 1?

Most of them.
Even then, it's usually just one series like the last time we got a series in issue #1 with School Judgement in 2015 or Iron Knight in 2014 and before that,
the last time (other than this year) we got a batch (or any) of series starting in issue #1 was in 2009. The few years preceding that (2008, 2007), also had batches but the last time before that was 2004!

Quite a lot, seems like. Usually it’s because a round happened at the end of the last year, but generally there’s no hard and fast rule for when a new round begins

Hence the oneshot appearing. Also it matches now with MangaPlus IDs. The pattern is the same ever since Dr. Stone Reboot debuted

#48 Neverland absent, Tokyo Grind Horror Channel appeared
#49 BHA absent, Shirosugi! Akunososhiki appeared
#50 One Piece absent, Seiyaku no Oga appeared
#51 Nothing is absent, nothing extra appears
#52 Dr. Stone is absent, Seiken no Yuusha no Goei appears
Yeah, I think it's pretty much confirmed that if there's something to put in the place, they'll give a series to be absent

Can you cite a source?
I tried to find one myself, and this was the closest thing I could find:

Basically one of those "there's no official announcement, but we have an EXCLUSIVE SOURCE that told us this was happening" kind of articles. Whether or not it's legit, or whether we ever see the project get fully revealed, is probably a coin toss.

At this point it should just be cancelled or run a chapter intermittently on jump plus.

Sad for the assistants who relied on the series for their livable wage. Your boss profits while you suffer.

Togashi has been taking 1-1.5 year hiatuses for over a decade now.

I'm sure his assistants:
a) have a game plan for when he's not giving them work at this point, and
b) don't have a hard time finding other assistant gigs, since they're trusted with such a high profile title.

On top of that, apparently Togashi pays his assistants a bonus twice a year, even when there's no HxH to work on. (To be fair there's no proof that he still does this, but at least one former assistant has said on the record that Togashi treats his assistants super well)

That said, it's kind of crazy that WSJ didn't push for him to conclude the series at the end of the Chairman Election arc. That felt like a natural enough endpoint for the whole story, and his output rate was already inconsistent enough back then that it's hard to imagine that WSJ was 100% cool with continuing to give him a salary. I guess HxH still sells so well that Togashi's pay is a drop in the bucket by comparison.

I don't know about the source, but the writer of the article doesn't seem terribly reliable, considering that they somehow missed 7 movies (there are 22, not 15) and a sequel series.

Also you'd think someone would mention Dragon Ball Evolution.

What tells you that Togashi's assistants suffer from hiatus ?

WSJ doesn't even have a manga to replace TSS, BC and Double taisei, you want them to cancell a manga that sells at least 1M a year.

Thanks for the heads-up.

The original source for that looks to be Sensei Hakusho. So he's referring to bonuses back during the YYH days. But if he did it then, I don't see why he would've stopped.

Here's the page (summer and Christmas bonuses):

Curious about this as well. I know he has (or did have, back in 2016) 5 assistants, but who knows how long they're there for.

I wouldn't expect too much from SB here, though.

BC had a new volume, MHA had only backlog.
Also, I believe this includes sales from music, DVDs and movies related to the franchise. I'd expect MHA to earn higher for the next 2 months since we have the anime and movie earnings to count for now.
