Rather than sales, I'm more curious about how much they'll print first run. Will WSJ anticipate it as huge and print 1 mil copies figuring it'll sell out eventually, or will they keep it fairly low to be safe and just print more if it does really well?

I would say they should go no higher than 300K

Unless the series is remarkably bad I doubt kids and young teens will be hyper critical off it.
Yes Jump will promote one of their big creators returning, but it’s not normal for us to see artwork, titles, trailers, and release dates for a manga that’s months away.
Obviously they’re going to have high expectations for a past veteran, but seems like they’re seriously banking on this being big.

And I would say 500K 1st Volumes is too big expections for anyone in 2019. Just because physical sales aren’t the same as they were when Naruto was at its peak.
They do videos for new series that sells 90k several volumes in, why would they not do that for Kishimoto's return? That's literally the bare minimum you should do in order to hype up the series and garner interest. They need ways to get out the word that narutos creator is returning. Trailers and snapshots of art isn't nearly as big of a marketing move as you're making it out to be.

Also 500k being the series peak not first volume sales.

300-400k seems like the safest bet for WSJ.

idk what I preferred. The pages being full of digital sales arguments or being full of if a series we barely know anything about will be successful or not...

Who's arguing? This is actually a fun discussion. I'd much rather talk about sales on this than some non-existent digital sales number.

Also we gotta get that 1000 page count this year.

almost everyone?

That's a very literal definition. If you go by that, any form of discussion will be an argument.
This right now would be an argument.

would you prefer I said debating? An argument isn't a negative thing if that's what you're getting at.

Just a few days until the anime of The Promised Neverland starts, lets predict the boost:

+200k per volume.
Second place oricon ( or even f... )

Samurai 8 sales are literally non-existent sales numbers.

Sure, but follow up series from other mangaka are available to study. Many like Kenshin, Death Note, Saint Seiya were all huge series in their own respective rights that are important to WSJ and the manga industry's history. It helps in comparing Kishimoto's return who's previous manga is an important part of WSJ and manga industry's history.

Digital sales, on the other hand, we have absolutely no previous history for a WSJ series. All we have is the one report where digital sales overtook physical sales for the overall manga market and Shueisha chief telling digital sales account for 30% of sales. None of that relates to WSJ. The amazon list and other available digital lists clearly show the trend is very different from physical.

Sure, debating is a better word. Argument does tend to sound negative.

A slow week on releases does that

everything after Kenshin is a flop, beside another Kenshin
Bakuman sells 1/2 of Deathnote sales
B't X is a "success", but no where near Saint Seiya
Also the fiesta that is Robot x Laserbeam

There are actually more one trick pony in WSJs, and only a handful of multiple hits mangaka

I'd say Bakuman was a good success just because of how much of a shift it was for Ohba/Obata from Death Note. Selling 600-700k was pretty impressive for a slice of life/romance series which centered about the manga industry when their previous work was so dark and edgy.

It's what makes the new manga from Kishimoto more susceptible to scrutiny because it seems like it might be another adventure battle manga. So there would be a set of expectations the series would need to meet for fans of Naruto. It's unfortunate but that's how fans of something like a franchise usually are.

Samurai 8 might as well be the next Busou Renkin at best, barely reaching 100 chapters with enough content to make a two cours anime

If Samurai 8 does turn out like Busou Renkin then I hope it's opening will be as cool as Makka na Chikai was.

Why focus on B'tX when it didn't even run in Jump? You also neglect that Saint Seiya was his second success after Ring ni Kakero (Seiya is third if you count Fuma no Kojiro as a success but its success is far more mild than the other two) and he had four other failed Jump series.

Also if we compare Jump mangaka who have had multiple successful series they tend to find more success when shifting genre for their next series.
