That was my entire point. Just because something doesn't have a life or death fight for control of the fate of the world every chapter doesn't mean it is bad in any way.

The manga is hardly two volumes long. If it were intended to only be 5 volumes long or something, I could see it. But considering it runs in WSJ, it was likely intended to be much longer.

That being said, it has already had several fights, including introducing a major villain, the character development is on point, the art is great all around imo, character design is solid, I love the idea of "you can't stop the big bad from happening, you just have to be ready when it does come", and I also find the transformation and the ascended humans idea really interesting.

But everyone is allowed their own opinion. Unfortunately, it seems mine is in the minority, which is fine. I'm sure plenty of amazing manga have died well before their time.
You say minority but the majority of the people here praised the manga when it started.

Sorry, I wasn't frequently the forum when the manga started, so I've mostly heard "it's too slow; do something already" lately. That being said, I was referring to the Japanese audience, whose opinions actually matter in its survival.

Didn't the EiC say that he wanted more series to appeal to western audiences?

Or maybe I'm thinking of something video game related.

This was said about Jump Force, I believe, but they also could have mentioned wanting more manga to appeal to the west.

I mean, there's a reason why mangaplus is a thing. Maybe if they see something getting a lot of views there it can save it from the axe on the grounds of appealing to a global market.

It's Jump Force, but it wasn't EiC that said it, it was the developer/publisher of Bandai Namco. The game is also dead so that strategy works well lmao (~200 concurrent players in the steam chart, 9800 peaked)

---------------
Also no on the Last Sayuuki reception, it was mixed (like 70% like it and 30% did not),

The only recent manga that everyone on here praised was The Promised Neverland back in 2016. Even Juju and Act Age had mixed reviews early on (not Jump-like and another exorcist manga right after they axed a bunch)

As far as Mangaplus has been working, only series like Jigokuraku and Spy x Family can be categorized as something western enjoys a lot, and maybe we could include Arata and Abyss Rage. Every other series is just, 'there', not like they get a lot of attention. What you have on the top is OP, DBS, MHA and Naruto, and that doesn't help in order to see if you could save something because western likes it. Like come on, you got Haikyu with 133k views and WNL with 158k, or JJK with 162k.

The main point is, western audience that visits the web just goes there because there's a new One Piece chapter and their favourite One Piece anituber lets them know. And the same thing happens with DBS and in both languages. You cannot measure anything new by its popularity since most western is casual audience and will only care about series that are actually big and have been running for a long time.

What stats are you referencing on the Saiyuki thing?

Also, I feel like the "mixed reception" of series is a little vague, because it's clear at this point everything has a "mixed reception". It's simply a matter of the work being high enough in quality to develop a readership, and Saiyuki it appears hasn't achieved that.

I was just talking hypothetically. I think Shueisha is trying to be more global, and that's why the made this app. And if they want to measure the reception in the west, it's the only way they have other than the actual volumes (which would only be licensed if they're successful in the first place). Of course, in practice, the possibility of anything getting a big audience overseas before in Japan is basically non-existent, since manga is still pretty niche, even with anime becoming more mainstream over the years. But in the event that it happened and say, Sayuuki was in the top 10 in mangaplus, perhaps the editors would give it more chances than otherwise.

Reaching a broad audience doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna listen to what western wants given that they already have series that appeal to that audience and give them views. Of course, the logical strategy would be to try to please both audiences, but as you said, manga is still pretty niche here and targeting an audience that does not benefit them as much as Japan does is not gonna happen soon. So that's why (I think) they took the step of releasing manga to that little audience, so it can increase and it can be considered a potential huge audience which interests will be taken into consideration. Or at least, that's what I want to think.

In this forum, I heard that people haven't patience for storytelling now.

However, was it different in the past? What weekly manga take his time in the past?

True. All manga have "mixed reception" since not all people will like these.

However, the important to avoid axed is that the manga has enough people who likes this (s these people will still buy this manga), even if there are many people who hate this.

Not to mention that the opinions in this forum won't be important for WSJ. I remember when Black Clover was pretty critized and hated in this forum. It still survives and has an anime.

Shokugeki had way too much potential to end this soon. Tsukada struggled to write a series with such a simple concept. Should've kept it focused on the school.... Bruh.
What potential had Shokugeki? It was only a "battle" school manga with foodgasm. Is not like it was Assclass where it had the korosensei plot.
Anyway,I feel that both Tsukuda and Tosh had a different vision of what should be Soma after the stagiaire arc (Tosh a status quo one with more festival arcs and Tsukuda a wacky and "edgy" series with kubo's twist like the 0 espada) and that provoke the decline of the series.

One Piece spent its first 100 or so chapters on episodic stories of the Straw Hats protecting places and fighting random villains. It didn't reallly become the series we know today until Alabasta around Chapter 170. An arc like Skypeia would be an instant reader interest killer nowadays.

Naruto didn't have anything really plot significant beyond set-up until the Chuunin Exams five volumes in. Said exams lasted over 10 volumes.

Bleach didn't have anything resembling an ongoing narrative for its first year of publication.

By comparison:
-HeroAca got through virtually all its initial plot-set up in Volume 1. Shigaraki and League of Villains introduced in Chapter 13.
-Black Clover went through a multitude of narratively relevant arcs in its first 40 chapters, as well as introduced the Eye of the Midnight Sun.
-Promised Neverland got into it's story from the get go.
-Act-Age started the Death Island arc in Chapter 7.
-Jujutsu Kaisen had a major development in its first ten chapters with Itadori's "death", followed by the introduction of Getou's Faction and Gojo's powers.
-Chainsaw Man had its first major fight start in Chapter 7. Gun Devil was established just five chapters later.

Get my point?

No lol. Most successful manga by chapter 8 already start a new arc (or in some case, transition from the prologue). I think the problem lies in the fact that Saiyuki is just not good as people on this forum have claim.

Personally, if i read a manga then at the end of the chapter with the cliff hanger I go "HOLY SHIT I NEED TO READ THE NEXT ONE ASAP", then that manga is a success in my book.

Generally speaking, you figure out if a modern Jump manga is going to be a hit simply by analysis of the chapters making up the first volume. I assume those are the ones Jump is going to pay attention to the most reception wise, since there's very little reason to keep a series going if it's clear the series won't work for new readers. There are exceptions, but that's how I see it.

Crazy that Shokugeki is finally ending. Good news for the current and future newbies now that there's a space free in the TOC that has been permanently filled for the past handful of years. I wonder if anything else is going to end around the same time for another small serialization round.
