I love Otokojuku, it's a proper classic action gag manga and you can tell it had a strong influence on future series, it's like proto-jojo with all the crazy fighting styles. There's so many silly powers in there (wolf stacks is one of my favourite powers ever, it just looks so ridiculous and amazing). Also golf is an ancient Chinese martial art.

I'm From Japan just randomly having not-Principal of Otokojuku, Edajima Heihachi as a major character was one of the few things I liked about that series.

also speaking of gag manga assuming we're getting a gag manga to replace Soma (or at least we'll see one in the batch after), what kind of gag manga does everyone think/hope we'll see?

for reference, recent gag manga have been about:

demon salaryman (Devilyman)
demons/summoning I guess? (Samon)
strong robot things (Spring Weapon)
being a really bad manga (U19)
demons again (Poro, I think it was a gag manga at least? I barely remember it)
cute animals making dirty jokes (Tomatoypoo)
aliens (Invade You)
future salarymen (Tanaka Seiji, though it was half action)
statues/classical art making pee jokes (David)
Japanese culture (I'm from Japan)

and I guess you could Yuuna, WNL, and now Kamio Yui as romcoms too.

It's hard to say what we're due for next, gag manga tend to vary a lot in setting. Might be about time for another salaryman thing though I'd like to see soma replaced with a cooking gag manga, especially if Saiki guy's done a oneshot of one.
When it comes to gags, I'm usually open to trying just about any type of setting. The humor would have to be exceptionally mean-spirited or disgusting for me to at least not check it out. But like other series, I still value good artwork when reading through gag series. I enjoyed David, Samon, and Lycopene's styles; they each had a unique sense of style and the characters fit well into their settings. However, stuff like Seiji Tanaka and Japan's styles were a biy too rough for me to get into, especially Seiji Tanaka. I'd say some of those final chapters actually looked worse than the earlier ones.

Stealth symphony is in the highest echelon of literary mastery in all Japanese literature and I'd even go as far as saying among most contemporary literature thus far. Its subversions, its themes, its chilling relevancy to the world of today, really you just see nothing like it y'know? Pillars of literature today like Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, Twilight, Harry Potter, and classics like Maze Runner and Fifty Shades of Grey just dont even come close to the dynamic and phenomenal writing in Stealth Symphony. Writers need to study this story for years to come and learn from it. It's just that good.
Okay. You've gone too far but it's ok.

GIGA are special issues of Jump which contain stuff like bonus content for ongoing's, resolution chapters and one-shots.
Ah i see!! Thank you for the answer :D do you know when it will be released??

You mean Jump GIGA? It's a companion magazine to wsj that typically has a bunch of oneshots and mini-series, as well as special chapters of stuff from the main magazine. Usually it has 3 monthly issues in Summer and 3 in Winter (first issue this Summer seems to be 27th June, and the next two will be at the end of July and end of August).

Sometimes series get moved to there to do their final chapters when they end so that wsj can get the series out of the main magazine earlier (and hence have the next new manga start earlier). Gintama got moved to Jump GIGA in winter and it seems like Soma's maybe going to end there in this year's Summer run.
Wow! Thank you for answering! It makes me excited to read their short stories! Any idea when will this released??

Boruto is already up on Manga+. It's not on Viz and nothing else from this week's WSJ is up early.

They are releasing the Otoko Ippiki anime with subs. What a great time to be alive.

1. It is. At least for me. I'd have to say I think that last MHA's arc was by far the worst in the whole series, and I really think Horikoshi needs to improve when it comes to give time to develop characters. I really think he tries to do it but it just feels so forced that it's unsettling. It's like trying to handle 40 characters at the same time giving each one 1 or 2 panels and disgusing it as development. I don't know, I just felt like the whole arc was an excuse for that thing we all know about. This Villain's Arc is getting a bit more interesting, but it can't still get much attention from me, it just doesn't feel as appealing to me as what Black Clover is doing right now. Kind of ironic, thinking about how I ranted about BC for being cliché af (and it still kinda is, but it ends up being enjoyable enough to accomplish its goal as a series).
2. Practically none. Well, it may indeed grow up a bit, but I can't see Dr. Stone being a huge hit despite all the marketing and promotion it's receiving thanks to Crunchyroll. I can see it flopping and manga keeping it's usual pace and results. Kinda sad, since if series were a bit less repetitive it would definitely be one of the most enjoyables in the magazine.

Not like I have enough knowledge to answer the other ones, I haven't been following Jump for that much and don't wanna spit answers without having a proper opinion about that. I could answer 3 with Medaka Box as Mankichi said, tho. And regarding female mangaka, I'd like to say that it's amazing how some of the most popular and fantastic series right now in the magazine are being written/drawn by females: Akutami Gege, Koyoharu Gotouge, Posuka Demizu or Shiro Usazaki.

I don't read Chainsawman but I've skimmed the earlier chapters and the most recent ones and looking from here it's seems a bloody mess when it comes to shonen tropes.
The first arc of The promised Neverland did it sometimes too, but almost all of the shonen tropes are there.
I have a vague feeling that Stealth Symphony did it eventually too, but I don't remember why since I almost deleted that mess from my head. I just remember discussing this with someone back in the time it was published.

Which ones did you dislike? Tropes in and of themselves are not bad things.

Reminds me of Furudate.

"Furudate's gender is male. But Japanese fans think they are a woman. Their gender has never been official."

Still nothing official?

We complained of Double taisei saying that the character would be very over power early on, but so far the MC has only missed most of the matches in which it participated.

Appropos of recent conversation, some recommended resources for better understanding and exploring ideas behind why a comic or story does or does not work beyond “I think this is bad”

The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell:

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud:

Comics and Sequential Art by Will Eisner:

Manga in Theory and Practice by Hirohiko Araki:
All good starting points for people trying to turn talking about weekly shonen jump into something more longform and critical, whether here or (yes) on twitter. Maybe overkill for those happy to just chat casually about it all of course, but good for those looking to go beyond that.
What value do you think reading these has given you?

...Because he's such a supa-good Shogi player that he overthinks the game and thus runs the timer out. This isn't a matter of skill, it's just him being an idiot.

Opinions on this week (MINOR SPOILER ALERT)
  • BC dragging a bit, just purely last 2 chapters MHA takes the lead.
  • AA going back to what it does best.
  • KnY best non-scanlated series as usual
  • Chainsaw a bit slow but emotional asf
  • Beast surprisingly hype. Going Eyeshield route rather than Haikyuu route. MC is likable
  • Saiyuki sooo slow. Beautiful art but..
  • No clue what Double Taisei's endgame is
  • Shinobi wasted a chapter. Was okay
Anything I forgot is prob not worth mentioning (specifically for this week)

Jujutsu may have been the best chapter for me this week.

Itadori killing someone for first time, you can see his face

From the newbies I'd say Tokyo Shinobi Squad has been the best this week. lol Beast Children copypasting Nekoma blood system metaphor.

And the Yuis did in 17 chapters what Yugi and the Pharaoh lasted 55 chapters to achieve :3c

PD: I'm guessing we are starting new Jujutsu arc next week.

Beast Children is honestly continuing the "good but not spectacular" impression I've been getting regarding the manga. It's by all rights not bad, but I don't know if that can allow it to survive.

The Kamio Yui page with the chapter's title reminds a lot of Nurarihyon no Mago's design.

I'm sorry if was not clear, but that's not what a meant. I just wanted to say that, within the little bit I've read, Chainsawman ignores a lot of shonen tropes.

And I said that on a neutral sense. I'm not bashing nor praising it.

All the new series are bad. Shinobi Strike Squad gets a pass because the protag power reminds me of Mistborn book by Brandon Sanderson (manipulate metals). The content itself is pretty bland. It reads like Red Sprite honestly.

There's not much to mention rn tbh. Rizu's declaration doesn't seem foreshadowed but in any case I'm looking forward to the arc. It's pretty funny how it's actually true that Taishi can only write family-related serious stories hehe. Personal inspiration I suppose. Anyway should be good
